Noteworthy Results and Goldfish Games — Week of 1/20-1/22

I feel that way about Gabe Arnold.
So do I and I told them as much.
disagree with this. arnold's ceiling is way higher than franklin's. not even comparable recruits. not to say arnold is a lock future finalist. he just has a lot to work with from a mat savvy, technical acumen, and athleticism. and still has a lot of areas in his game that can improve.

Arnold has more upside for sure but I dont feel he's going to be the recruit many of you think he will be. That's all I'm saying. I think there's a difference in the type of recruits Tom likes next to those Cael are looking for. In my opinion Tom likes Clydesdales while Cael is interested in thoroughbreds. Both great in their own right, both clearly able to win championships depending on how you develop them...they just do it in different ways. Ive seen your posts over on HR about PK and think you are spot on...you usually are about your guys over there even if against popular opinion. ( I respect that btw) I think PK is a Clydesdale that can will and power his way to a great career but his athleticism may hold him back somewhat.

You like my post before I made my edits. You are probably gonna take it back after you read my finished version. Lmao

no it's fine. i just don't think arnold is a clydesdale. one thing i've loved about him going back to when i stumbled upon his dad's instagram page when he was still in junior high is that he has great feel and creativity. he loves figuring scrambles and positions out. that's a style iowa is missing and the staff does a horrible job of developing. you can see that with PK. he's a 3rd year guy who looks just as lost in scrambles as he did when he got here. i'm sure he looks like a monster when he drills, but take him off schedule, make him create, and he's very average. kind of like a kirk cousins of wrestling. arnold has a very different approach. remember, cael recruited arnold too.

Kirk Cousins of wrestling. That is genius.

Playing quarterback is a great analogy for wrestling. It's all about having answers. If you change the picture by showing cover 2 presnap, and rotate to quarters post snap or bring a simulated pressure, Joe Burrow is going to have an answer. He'll find his check down or his hot, and he'll do it so quickly those guys have room to run and pick up 5 extra yards.

PK didn't have an answer when Hamiti changed the picture on him. Once Hamiti passed the ankle, PK looked like he'd never been in that position in his life.

Put me in the group that believes Gabe Arnold will be a very good college wrestler. Multiple time AA type. Low bonus point guy that wins tight matches often. PK is a stud with similar results expected but attacks at a much higher rate.

Gabe Arnold will be fantastic. His defense is elite and that'll translate to college. Nothing against Franklin but I'm pretty sure he was a walk on level recruit at both PSU/Iowa.

I like Barr's ceiling a bit more in terms of bonus potential (biggest example is the way he leg turked Rocco at Fargo). I would have been happy with either one.

Ok, so I did it again. Below are the complete results of the weekend matches. I may have missed some matches. I start with Slush's list and then add any others I find along the way. Interesting tidbit, American won three matches on Sunday, each by one team point.

I thought Lamont and Modell could have made a diff in the Wisky/Iowa match.... huge bonus from Dow that I didn't see coming....

I have never seen P. Kennedy compete.
You guys make him sound a lot like Marinelli.
Would you compare the two guys, incl projections for Kennedy.

And your next task woud be to compare Kennedy to P. Gallagher of Oh St.
Thanks

Marinelli looked like a physically sculpted tank when he was a RS freshman and beat 2 time defending champion Cenzo in a BJC dual. Cenzo would have bullied the snot out of Kennedy and probably bonused him.
With that said, Kennedy will win most of his matches and possibly outshine Marinelli's post season performances.
Kennedy will probably outperform Gallagher in their career post season performances. Most because Kennedy will be able to get off the bottom against most.

Arnold’s issue is his frame. Too short for his weight, which puts a ceiling on him. Very good wrestler, but not a finalist type. At PSU he would be our 7-8th best starter. At Iowa he will be a top 2-3 scorer. That’s the difference in the programs.

This. Give me the rangy types - that’s why I really like Barr. Arnold may be a multiple time AA, but top 10 recruits should always win championships - at least that’s the knock against Cael’s success - that it’s inevitable given his recruiting. Aside from Spencer, who is a unicorn, what have Iowa’s top 10 recruits done recently? Same with the Buckeyes. Nolf, Nickal, Cenzo, Lee, Starocci were no higher ranked than your Warners, Gallaghers, Kharchlas, Marinellis, etc.

Cael develops better than the rest. It's that simple. Sure, he's the best recruiter, but he has an eye for talent, but he molds it better than anyone.

Frank Molinaro is shorter than Thomas Gilman.

Height/range is a factor but not insurmountable -- at least with the right coaching and partners.

Weight class makes a big difference in the stocky/rangy discussion. The stocky guys have better success below 157-165.

Snyder is 6 inches shorter than Coon.

I'd typically like the rangy guy more. But let's not pretend that it's a limitation. It's a factor.

Agreed. I didn’t mean stocky guys can’t succeed. It’s just a reason why I’m not high on Arnold. Maybe he overcomes it. Max Dean surely has. The opposite is why I’m probably irrationally high on Barr. In PSU’s system, I feel the sky is the limit for him.

That's a pretty high Barr to set, don't you think?

I’m sure you can find more examples but the truth is there aren’t many guys his height in the upper weights. Arnold is a good wrestler but his lack of height and length will absolutely be a limiting factor in college. Going forward I think Barr only widens the gap between them

is there a gap currently? have they ever wrestled?

You know it doesn’t matter. Barr is a Penn St recruit and Arnold an Iowa recruit. Even if Arnold beats him 3 times in a row, like Cass over Kerk, Barr will always be getting better and Arnold will stay the same. Barr will finally beat him and based on that victory, Arnold will never, ever, beat him again. Did I do that right?

I’d wager that @zzs006 is a wee-bit* more knowledageable than your average chest-thumper, so your response would have been better if saved for another time.

And I’ll match your Cass-Kerk example (that has yet to play out, btw) with an ADS-RBY example.

* significantly, in this context

i love barr as a recruit so no problems with predicting that he'll have a better career. that's all up to opinion at this point. i was pointing out that assuming there is a gap currently is unfounded to my knowledge.

(that would be an awesome match to watch btw)

How about a Marinelli/Joseph example? And yes, Alex choked at Nationals and Joseph has multiple titles but in the end, head to head, Marinelli had a better record. I’m assuming Cael knew Marinelli would lose in the quarters before he ever faced Vincenzo so he didn’t care about the regular season or Big 10 tourney losses.

I understood your question as such — certainly not a problem to ask it.
