EDITED, as I agree with the suggestions - Thanks.

Dear Sandy Barbour,

I am a 1977 graduate of PSU and have followed PSU athletics since my older brother enrolled at main campus in 1967. I can not remember a more embarrassing downward spiral for a major sports program than what has happened to PSU Women's BB the last few years. What is it going to take for PSU to make a coaching change and change the direction of the Women's BB program?

Coach Washington's teams look unprepared, undisciplined, and her players generally lack the fundamental skills and decision making required to compete in the B10 which reflects very poorly on player development. I followed PSU Women's BB for years, tuning in to watch games whenever they are on TV, but her recent teams have been unwatchable. The PSU teams look to be about as organized as a playground pick up game for large stretches of games. And coach Washington many times just stands on the sidelines with her arms folded.

The majority of my alum friends have also stopped watching PSU Women's BB. PSU needs a better Women's BB coach, and I hope you will do something to change the direction of the program for the better. A coaching change is long overdue.

Best Regards,

I'm shocked she hasn't been released yet. Not sure what Sandy is waiting for. Doesn't she have an Assistant AD for firing coaches?

No school is dominant or elite in every sport. Over the last decade we’ve been dominant in Women’s Volleyball, Fencing and Wrestling. Football has turned the corner and men’s basketball is having a good year despite the tourney miss. We have almost no cellar dwellers that I can think of.

Some of you guys sound like my 4 year old. They are spoiled and still I hear, “I want more!!!” Say you have 10 clients at work. 9 of them are doing great and management bases your performance on the 1 client who thinks you’re a turd. It happens, but it’s horse shit.

Give it a rest for once

Not sure OP shares your silence is golden approach. But why do you come into a thread with the Board Nanny mentality. If you are not interested read something else. No one stops their actions for unsolicited Board Nanny directives....

Women's BB seemed to be making a little progress up until the bot went off their rockers all those years ago. I thought they really got negatively affected by the bot's trashing of the university's reputation, and Washington just couldn't overcome it, and has never recovered.

So if every player in your line up hits over .300 and one player hits .100, I guess they shouldn’t replace that guy and just be happy everyone else is hitting well.

In the first paragraph, "by" should be "my." I also just think the racial discussion is unnecessary and does nothing to assist your point and instead detracts from it. Just leave it at the performance of the team, IMO.

Thanks for your comments, and you are likely correct.

Best Regards,

Introducing the completely gratuitous race angle overshadows any other argument you may wish to make. In the mind of the reader, that becomes your real purpose, whether it actually is or not. But since you bring it up, there's a decent chance that reason is at least part of your purpose. And with that, I would dismiss all of it.

Head coaching positions have to be merit-based appointments. In my opinion, CW has not merited staying on at this point based on overall recruiting success and on-court success. I am not enough of a basketball expert to know whether or not the fundamentals are truly lacking, but the team does not pass the eye test, imo, in the very few times I have watched them in the last couple seasons. I hope we go in another direction, and I don't care if the new coach is male or female, black or white or purple (as long as he or she can bleed Blue & White), tall or short, old or young, thin or fat.... just get 'er done in recruiting, and on and off the court.

Now let's talk about the softball coach and her lack of success....

Who cares? We had a good coach and she was let go because she wasn't politically correct. As far as I'm concerned, we have what we deserve. After what happened to Rene, I could care less about girls basketball.

Firing a good, successful coach because she is also a bigot is exactly the kind of “success with honor” mentality that I want my school’s athletic department to have.

So you are saying that disagreeing with the OP means you are not interested? I thought he/she demonstrated very well his/her interest in the subject. And Board Nanny? Really? One disagrees with an OP and gets that label?

Perhaps the board nannys are the ones that are constantly calling for coaches to get canned. You know, the same ones that were after Franklin's ass after the 2016 Mich game?

Man sometimes this board is really an alternative universe.

To be honest, I’m pretty comfortable with the moral stance of “I do not want someone with bigoted views towards lesbians as a representative of my school, and I have no issues that a person holding those beliefs lost their job because of it”.

Can't say I follow women's sports that much. I thought Sandy was doing a fine job until I opened this lol/.

The women’s B.B. team is the biggest money loser at PSU. If Sandy is running the Dept on a business value basis corrective action will be taken. If not then solicitations for donations have an uphill battle

Just curious.....what’s the next WBB recruiting class look like at this point in time?

Thanks!

I question how anyone can care enough about that snooze-fest of a sport to watch a single game, let alone write a letter to anyone on the subject...but whatever floats your boat, Greg.

When the University is paying her $700K per year don't you think people should be concerned with the product they are putting on the court?

So if every player in your line up hits over .300 and one player hits .100, I guess they shouldn’t replace that guy and just be happy everyone else is hitting well.

It’s called a budget. .300 players cost more than .100 average players. You can’t have the best player at every position. You can’t have the best coach in every sport. You wanna try to dumb it down anymore?

Was she against gays or against gays on the team and the strife that can happen when players on the same team are in relationships together?

But not every low paid player brought in hits .100 and not every high paid player hits .300. We hardly have the best coach in every sport, but you can have a successful coach who isn’t the best. PSU could find someone who makes the same amount and does a better job.

HAA!! My first reaction to that is, as astronomically over paid as she is, Allan Myers got paid over ten times that amount from Penn State. And people wonder why he flipped. :)

The latter. Plus, she would assure concerned parents of recruits (and the recruits themselves) that they wouldn't have to put up with intra-team same sex sexual pressure. Good for her.

Since Rene left, the girls can fraternize however they want. And they play like it. They are now free to play their game (and drama) however they want. And no one (except a few on here) really care.

Give it a bit more thought...

I've been saying the last couple of years that Washington has got to go. However, looking at her roster, maybe she stays ONE MORE YEAR.
( No seniors on the roster):

1 Alisia Smith F FR/FR 6-3 Lansing, Mich./Waverly
2 Amari Carter G JR/SO 5-8 Washington, D.C./St. John's College
4 Siyeh Frazier G SO/SO 5-9 Detroit, Mich./Renaissance
5 Kamaria McDaniel G FR/FR 5-10 Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Heights Robichaud
11 Teniya Page G JR/JR 5-7 Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic
12 Kayleigh Semion G JR/JR 5-6 Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore
22 Leah Knizner G JR/JR 5-9 Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area
23 Jaylen Williams F JR/JR 6-3 Easton, Mass./Archbishop Williams
24 Sam Breen F FR/FR 6-1 Gibsonia, Pa./Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic
31 Jaida Travascio-Green G SO/SO 6-2 Lisle, Ill./Downers Grove North
34 Sarah McMurtry G JR/JR 5-6 Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair

Yes, because I’m sure teams like UConn, South Carolina, Baylor, etc. have no lesbians on the roster so they all are in complete harmony. Give me a break.

The justifications you are making for Portland’s behavior and beliefs are no different than if someone had said this in a different era:

“She wasn’t against minorities; she was against minorities on the team and the strife that can occur when players of different races are on the same team together. Plus, she would assure concerned parents of recruits (and the recruits themselves) that they wouldn’t have to put up with interracial social pressure. Good for her.

I'd shitcan the letter. If Annie doesn't realize that a change should be made, the eloquence of Churchill won't get her up to speed.

While I understand your unhappiness, your racial undertone is out of line. Remove it or your message is lost. Rather you might wanted to add that the programs attendence has declined nearly 50% over the last few years. That is a true measure of interest.
