*Official Pittsburgh Penguins 2021 - 2022 NHL hockey thread!*

See above!
I just hope that he doesn't lose anything on his once in a generation backhand, which I could watch all day against any team but my caps.

Saw Tom Wilson and his now fiance the past couple of days while walking the dogs. He looks to be in shape for the opener against the Rangers. :) I see that the boxing gym company that he owns a piece of opened up a branch in the 'Burgh. Honestly, their director of development probably ought to be beheaded for thinking that's a good idea.

It is his final year on this contract. He has a full no movement clause in his contract, so maybe zero if he doesn’t want to leave. Plus coming off major knee surgery, what is the expected return in the trade? I’d suspect it depends on how contract extension talks look too (among many other factors). The Pens would be stupid to pay him $9.5 million per year going forward. It’s also the final year for Rust and Letang. And Kapanen is a RFA after this season as well. Need some cap space.
That actually suggests a more interesting exit question: Of those four, how do you rate the probability of each returning?

Two months is quite a spell. Maybe the pens will take a page out of the Lightning's cap management playbook. (Note, I wonder about the same thing with the Caps and Backstrom.)

If they finish the season with the team and are not traded before free agency begins,

Kapanen 100%
Malkin, Letang 85%
Rust 75%

Malkin and Letang have both made a ton of money. Each has to realize their age and declining skill sets. Unless they are greedy and another team is willing to overpay, I think they’ll be back. Rust hasn’t made a ton of money (by the standards of the other two) and might be willing to go elsewhere if the Pens can’t get close enough to his market value.

These are just my not very educated guesses.

Letang is possibly, perhaps likely, viewed a little differently than Malkin by new management. Letang is in marvelous shape and his minutes (he played 30 mins in a recent exhibition game!) are hard to replace. He is rare in that regard and his game is actually becoming more calculating and consistent. Malkin has never been a workout warrior and injuries and his refusal to adapt to a more conservative style of play will make him more likely to move on.

I agree with this. My guesses are based on how the team feels negotiations are going. If the Pens dont think Malkin will accept his new reasonable market rate, then they’ll possibly try to trade him. Especially if they are playing well without him the next couple of months.

Pens chased MAF with 4 goals in the first period. This team is fun without Malkin slowing things down and figure skating while hogging the puck.

5-2 win tonight. The Pens have scored 15 goals in three games without Crosby and Malkin, Guentzel and Rust each missing a game and several other man games lost.

Pens are playing some really good, fast hockey.

but btw, is the nil ever going to get around to starting to reschedule the games during the break that’s now just about two weeks away?

They did a revised schedule release yesterday.

So did the league suspend the guy that smashed Teddy Blueger’s head like a pumpkin?
nope - Sully made some snarky comments about the lack of any discipline. Pretty standard MO for the NHL front office. They are so erratic in their policy, sort of like all of the officating in hockey. There are a few automatic calls but many subjective moments of shame - or lack there of.

A couple of nights ago, the Pens came from 2 - 0 down to BEAT the big bad Bruins. Marchand went crazy during the game and earned a 6-game suspension.

The guy is really a head-case folks!

Tonight, the Pens beat the Senators 2 - 0.

Jarry shuts dem boys out in Ottawa!

Next!
Casey DeSmith was actually in goal for the Pens last night Glov. Great to see another goaltender stepping up behind Jarry. Former Pen Matt Murray played well for Ottawa.

Pens have a devil of a time against the Devils!

Win 4 - 2.
They really are having an admirable season; I never expected them to have the record that they do. However, I don't think that they're as good as their record, and definitely don't think that they can win more than one round of playoffs. I'm going to the Rangers-Pens game on 2/26/22, which should be huge for placement.

When I worked 'security' at the Civic Arena, the two absolute worst fan bases (involved involving drunkenness, fighting, swearing, pissing outside, etc.) were the N.Y Ranger fans and the Toronto Maple Leaf fans.

The Detroit Red Wing fans were the best honestly.

Wow, I feel much safer now, knowing that you can be now known as "Security" !!!
o_O

How about Crosby scores his 500th goal tonight against the beloved Flyers.

That would surely turn some in Philly watching to quickly become Cryers......
;)
