Ohio State now with 5 2024 5-star recruits.

Recruiting rankings of 16 to 18 year old high school football players do indicate a level of talent, but the rankings are not always correct.

And they are not destiny.
Correct. The big difference is that the top teams collect so much high ranked talent that those who don't make it are pushed aside without the team missing a beat. See Fleming for OSU. And I'm sure a ton more out there for the top teams.

It hurts a little more when a team like PSU misses. Allar excelling and being a high draft pick will certainly help attract more top rated talent. Start building the reputation of developing high end guys.

Sorry, not ready to make large assumptions when I see a TCU in the playoffs and Texas A&M struggle.

Plenty more examples.

Good recruiting is important but not the only thing and no guarantee of future successes.

in this thread is simply being a playoff team -- which doesn't require UGA, ALA or OSU-type recruiting

Put Penn State in the Big 12 or ACC from '16 to '22. We probably make the playoff certain years. Not having to compete with the Big 3 Juggernauts helps immensely.

Somebody had to win those conferences and if you did so with a 0 or 1 in the loss column, you made the playoff.

No doubt, but we aren't in those leagues. And, OSU has out recruited Mich and us consistently...but we are close to Michigan in that regard...some yrs better.

Michigan has broken through and has developed their LOS and the QB position, after woefully underperforming under Hairball, and getting trounced in recruiting by OSU.

Really, it's a two game season for PSU (assuming they don't stumble to a lesser opponent)...splitting with Mich and OSU at worst annually should be expected..not losing both, as the norm. Whether people want to excuse them b/c of the B1G being tough or recruiting, whatever. We aren't Pitt. We are a blue-blood.

I'm on the same page.

Would you trade Penn State's Abdul Carter (number 232 on Rivals final 2022 rankings) for any of those Ohio State Linebackers?
No, OSU is so over hyped they have 2 Nattys in 50+ years.

Just as a mental exercise, lets count the decades where Alabama did not win a title. Then lets count the number of different coaches that have won titles there. Until their overall program success has been equaled, they will be the very definition of elite.

Dabo is just biding his time before Saban's retirement, ready to join the rare club of coaches to win titles at more than one program. How many have won a title as both player and coach at his alma mater? He has the potential to even surpass the GOAT with titles.

Nah, I'm sure Bama is gonna collapse after Saban, no one can replace a legend, right?
Ohio St has had number 1,2, and 3 classes in the past decade. They may have a better recruiting class average than Georgia over this past decade.

If your 3rd year five star isn't starting you have an issue.
That's really where teams like Georgia, Bama, and OSU have the big advantage. They can just toss the 3rd year 5 star guy aside and select another. It's like having a warehouse full of Ferraris. If one isn't working, just pick another.

Devin Brown in his first year isn't coming anywhere close to CJ Stroud in his third.

Well Stroud is no longer there, so regardless they're starting a new QB. Whether it's the one everyone expected or not remains to be seen. And I'm sure Stroud in his first year wasn't as good as his 3rd. About every team takes at least a temporary step back with a new QB.

And maybe a 3rd year qb isn't who they thought he was. Either way, a first year qb isn't coming on that field anywhere close to CJ Stroud, and Ohio State isn't entering 2023 on the same level they left 2022.
They’ll probably be better.

You seem so confident in OSU tumbling down like they are nothing. Hasn't Day had two different starting QB's excel in their initial season as a starter -- Fields and then Stroud in 2021? Both of whom I might add were B1G Quarterback of the Year in their first starting seasons.

And, with the best WR duo in the country around the QB, it may not matter if McCord or Brown are close to as good as Stroud -- just get the playmakers the rock.

He is being obtuse....when was the last time OSU had a 'qb' problem? Hard to remember b/c they have more talent on the outside than pretty much any team. Also, only one 5-star guy can play at QB...this isn't WR or other positions where many can step on the field. He is assuming OSU has a QB problem b/c Day hasn't announced the starter.

I think he's being too acute.

The Ohio St season will be determined by 3 things. Maybe a 4th if Michigan is just in their heads at this point with the way Michigan has dominated them recently.

1) Is their 60% new OL ready and when are they ready? I think vulnerable early but solidifying late.
2) Is the defense improved? I think some.
3) Is QB1 a drop off from previous years? I think some but not precipitously. I also think question #1 contributes to this.

No doubt...and their OL by the time they play PSU will have at least half the season to work together, which helps. I agree that their defense has to improve a bit in year two under Knowles -- it has to, right?

As for their QB play, having MHJ and EE, two first round WR's will help off-set any lack of experience at QB. Simply a game manager who can deliver them the ball, combined with OSU running the ball just enough, and they will be just fine. Offense hasn't really been the problem for them over many years.

That's why it's critical to exploit a new OL to get quick pressure on the qb. Notre Dame will be the 1st legit defense to get a Crack at them. If they hit the qb early and often, it will somewhat limit the talent at wr.

No doubt...and ND always has a rugged front....should be a good litmus test for the OSU OL and new QB
