Olympic thread: Penn State connections.

Just briefly saw Terry Pegula's daughter playing tennis against a Ukranian.

Unfortunately, she played in college at pitt.

Watching fencing medal round. Took a ten week fencing class as one of phys Ed requirements. Really enjoyed it.
Same here. PhysEd class in 82-83 at Mont Alto. It was a lot more fun than square dancing. I was pretty good at it. The teacher used me for his demonstrations.

Actually- now he gets to be a medal winner strutting around The Olympic Village until Closing Ceremonies....

Supposedly one big frat and hook up party...might be the best two weeks of his life! Oui oui!
They showed him hugging his girlfriend afterwards. She will keep keep him well rewarded and on a tight leash.

Huak tau night!

Interesting background story on Olympic hero Stephen Nedoroscik

Meet America’s Olympic Clark Kent

But it was the finish itself that had everyone buzzing:

  • Pommel horse specialist Stephen Nedoroscik, brought to Paris for just this one routine, absolutely delivered as the last man up for the Americans.
  • He'd sat in waiting for more than two hours as his teammates worked their way into medal contention, then removed his glasses and sealed the deal. Clutch.
Like that, a nation’s glory restored … and a new meme born? I mean, the guy’s job is literally just pommel. And pommel, he did. Dana O’Neil came through with this fascinating backstory on the 25-year-old’s already endearing glasses:

Nedoroscik has a disease that renders his eyes permanently dilated.

“But I don’t need to see when I do pommel horse,” Nedoroscik said, a bronze medal draped around his neck and a grin spread across his face. “It’s all by feel.”

He can also solve a Rubik’s Cube in under 10 seconds. It's like he was created in a lab to be the kind of quirky star Olympic fans tend to adore. ...

Angry that now I cannot watch the athletes. Imagine if they had blasphemed Islam. Moslems have more faith in the demon that they worship than Christians have in their Lord and Savior. Do not pretend to be a Christian and watch one more minute of Olympics presented by people who just spit in your face.
I was disgusted with that horrendous display, but I do not hold the athletes responsible for what the French did in the opening ceremonies.

This PSU kid, so far, is the "feel good" story of the Olympics.

Fox and Friends is putting his parents on in two minutes. Crazy!
His parents were cool. When introduced by the hosts, Doocy said one of his kids have the same genetic disease. His eyes are permanently dilated and his iris damaged.

When he does the pommel he goes by feel. I imagine most of those guys do so because it is too fast to follow and much of the hand work is either underneath them or behind them.

Have to say about his mount. He jumped up and moved so quickly to screen left that I thought he slipped up. Gave me a scare!

Somebody else said, one of the great things about the Olympics is getting an appreciation for a sport that you didn't even know existed or, at least, never paid attention. This is just beautiful

Simone Biles is nails!

Big day for the USA. Golds in swimming and fencing as well. Needed to keep China in view until our track and wrestling teams get to work

I read, on her floor exercise routine the night before last, she reached a height just under 12 feet in one of her running/jumping routines. That is pretty incredible. She'd be able to see over the rim. She's 4'8" So that would mean her feet were ~ seven feet off the ground!

Ever hear about Horace Ashenfeltrr? Yeah, neither did I.

FBI agent that won Olympic gold in the steeplechase in 1952 beating a Soviet runner. Pretty amazing as he had to train on his own time in NYC Central Park, using park benches as hurdles.

Enrolled at Penn State, left for three years to join the military during World War Two, and graduated after the war was over.

Yes, did you know that there is a building named for him? The Ashenfelter Indoor Multi Purpose Building (Indoor Track & Field). Pretty amazing the track can be tilted to mimic other tracks. The building is located east of BJC.
