I'm not sure why, but I am just sloppy about posting reviews this year.

The movie is tough to evaluate. In addition, it's a tough one to give a recommendation for. There isn't a lot of action in it. And the ending is somewhat unusual. DDL's performance is, per his norm, outstanding. He's one of the only actors who you can watch in multiple films, and not recognize the voice, the mannerisms, etc. No movie that I saw this year caused me to think more about it in the hours and days after I saw it. Alas, since a lot that was trying to make sense of what I had seen, I'm not sure if that is a positive or a negative -- probably some of both.

Like me, you do seem to try to see all the Oscar nominees, so I certainly encourage you to see it.

Yeah - outstanding performances aside (DDL is particularly restrained here), and while it’s a beautiful, meticulously crafted film, I would only recommend it to cinephiles, DDL fans, and maybe fans of period pieces. It’s a solid, beautifully shot movie that does a nice job of having our main characters conduct this subtle power struggle and eventual power reversal, but the mechanism by which it gets there is odd to say the least, though not surprising. The very literal presence of his mother at one point sort of giving way to Alma’s care and comfort really drives home the fact that this is a guy who can only fully commit and allow himself to be removed from his perfect, structured life when he literally has no control of it. That he likes it I think is the kicker.

After watching, I thought about the best Oscar nominated movies I’d seen this year - for me, they would go:

1. Lady Bird
2. Three Billboards
3. Darkest Hour
4. Dunkirk
5. Get Out
6. Phantom Thread
7. The Post

Still have to watch Shape of Water and Call Me By Your Name, which I plan to do soon. None of the above IMO are as good as La La Land. As an aside, Wonder Woman was probably the most fun I had and now that I think about it Logan was the other great, well made, fun movie I saw - better than half of the nominated movies this year for sure.

Saw 3 Billboards today and it is definitely one helluva black comedy. Martin McDonagh, of In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths fame, is the writer and the director here. Frances McDormand was great as were Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. Ultimately it is, to me, a film about people trying to gain redemption. The dialogue was great, particularly the scene with the visiting priest. This is not a film for everyone, though.
