( for the record: I post here not there, since up to now there has not been much on the OSU boards--sure that will change over time--so am asking the ? here).

We all know how wonderful Pa. HS wrestling has been through the years, but having said that, it seems to me many great HS wrestlers have also come out of Ohio.
Yet, and I am still cogitating about this, until this yr, OSU ( clearly the perceived leader in Ohio collegiate education) had not won NCAA for what was it 94 yrs..
Is this just a question of better leadership and focus or something deeper?
AND, if that is what it takes, is it too big a leap to say Rutgers, with that kind of leadership will come to prosper--given the overall quality of NJ HS wrestling. We have seen it big time in ASU recruiting thjs yr--and it goes without saying, PSU has prospered greatly.

Am interested in your POV.

Good coaching and great wrestling facilities...

at OSU, Penn State and Cornell has encouraged the top talent in the Northeast to stay closer to home, rather than migrate west to Iowa and Okie State.

Meanwhile, traditional schools in the east such as Edinboro and Lehigh continue to get their share of good talent.

Well, PSU is in the middle of the hot bed of HS wrestling, yet we went over 50 years without a title.

Location, facilities, alumni support and tradition are key ingredients to a successful program, but they are all trumped by coaching/recruiting. I don't think it is any coincidence that we started winning big when Cael became HC.

As for OSU, I think our emergence as a national power has helped them. Kids from Ohio and the eastern states no longer have to travel to the midwest to be part of a great rivalry. PSU vs OSU looks to be a rivalry that will be at least as big as Iowa vs OkSt.
