OT: 2018 Phillies Thread.....

It’s conversation dude, relax. Didn’t know it was illegal.

Called 3rd strike for the 3rd out, and Seranthony gets the save. Phil's win 3-1. Arietta with a nice job as the starter
From the play-by-play gamecast of the last Red Sox hitter (Holt) in the 9th

1Strike Looking Four-seam FB 98

2Ball Four-seam FB 99

3Ball Four-seam FB 98

4Foul Ball Four-seam FB 98

5Strike Looking Four-seam FB 100

Sweet.

Was at both Boston games and it is frustrating to watch the (lack of) hitting with RISP, but I must admit Carlos had a big hit to get the insurance run. Dominguez made it interesting in the ninth, but I will take a split with the best team in baseball.

Agree, though the Sox had even worse success in converting RISP. Nola + Arieta + a good showing by the bullpen = impressive.

That 2 game series was a great test as we know the Phillies can hang with the best team in baseball.

Can't wait for what's to come for this team. Especially with Gabe in his first year.

Phils down 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th against the Fish. Hoskins walks to lead off. (Kingery in as a pinch runner.) Herrera pops out. Santana with a soft infield single, so 1st & 2nd. Cabrera walks on 4 pitches, so bases loaded, 1 out, and Nick Williams to the plate. First pitch is a ball, and Phils are challenging that the ball hit Williams, but the call was upheld. Then a called strike, 1-1. Then a ball, 2-1. Then another called strike on a slider (both called strikes on sliders). Then a ball, to make it a full count, 3-2. Williams grounds softly to 3rd, and Kingery scores, and Santana and Cabrera advance. So the game is tied, 2-2. Franco up with 2nd & 3rd, and 2 outs. Ball 1 on a slider. Ball 2 on a fastball, to make it 2-0. Then Franco goes yard with a walk-off 3-run HR, and the Phils win, 5-2!!!

Fish close it was all over the place intentionally walking Franco was a very iffy decision

Rhys Hoskins is now IMO a legit star in this league

Thru 149 career games over 2 seasons

.383 OB%
.554 Slugging
.936 OPS
146 OPS+
40 Home Runs (162 game pace of 43)
119 RBI (162 game pace of 129)
98 BB (162 game pace of 107)
5.0 Offensive War (we won’t mention his defensive metrics :()

150 Ks is too much, but you can live with it when he’s putting up those other numbers. The 98 walks for a guy this young is insanely impressive

I can live with that many strikeouts if he's getting that number of walks. That means he's on base about 40% of the time where he doesn't put the ball into play.

The plus to that is if he's got that good of an eye now, that has a chance to improve as he gains experience.

936 ops is really good, so yeah, I can live with the K's

Maybe Mattingly figured they'd take their chances as Franco was 0-3 on the night. I thought with the base open they might have walked him too. Ball didn't look like it was going out but it sure did. Gotta win 3 of 4 here this weekend.

Could be they were worried about walking in the winning run with the bases loaded since the closer was having major control issues the whole inning and with Franco sporting an 0-3 on the night figured they could get him out.

It’s a shame Adam Jones elected to not join the Phillies. He could have been another piece. The bench has been short but they would have had some nice bench players and spot starters.

I actually like Quinn better right now. Jones is not doing much this year and I think Quinn will be the better player at this point in time...see the Red Sox game the other night....plus he has something you can't teach...SPEED....and can be a very valuable piece down the stretch. Just hope he stays healthy. I think he is the long term solution in CF if he stays healthy. Trout may come along and he may take CF or LF...we'll see. I think the Phils will move on from Oduble at some point as he is just to streaky and takes too many plays/pitches off and becomes a liability because of it.

Yes, I think you are probably right. I like Jones, total pro but Quinn can help you in a number of ways. He could be a valuable little piece. But I always thought Jones was a real professional.

Alfaro singles with 1 out and men on 1st & 3rd, to plate a run in the bottom of the 8th, 3-1 Phils. Kingery to bat next. Nice to get a run back after giving up the 1st run to the Fish in the top of the 8th.

After Kingery flies out, a passed ball moves runners to 2nd and 3rd. Then Quinn lines a double to right, plating 2 runners -- 5-1 Phils, with 2 out.

and that's a wrap. Phils win, 5-1. Velasquez gets the win, and Seranthony gets the save.

Phils are 61-48 for the season. That puts them a 1/2 game up on the Braves, who are 59-47, and 5.5 games up on the Nats, who are 55-53. All 3 teams are 6-4 in their last 10 games. The Braves won tonight, while the Nationals game with the Reds was postponed due to rain.

Another great win. Need to to take 3 against the Fish. Can’t play down to competition The Phillies are 42-30 against teams .500 and above. That’s impressive. Need to be better against the bad teams

His AB was a crowd-pleaser. Not on TV in St. Coll tonight but I saw the post game. V.V. played a hell of a game pitching and at the plate and on the base paths. Great to see.

VV was filthy tonight. If he keeps it going it maybe gives us 3 high quality starters. Look out!

Going to be a great seven weeks with so many teams still in the hunt. Half the league is probably within 5-6 losses. The other sports don’t have what baseball has, a standings and scoreboard watch on a daily basis where things can change on an hourly basis. The fact that baseball plays every day and that playoff spots are still somewhat limited make baseball great in this respect. For old timers, the AL race in 1967 was tremendous as was the NL race in 1964. More recent vintage, the Braves Giants race back a ways was great theater as well. Going to be a great finish.
