Such a tragic waste of talent. The IRS should have utilized his talents during his incarceration in an advisory capacity. Say what you want, ole Bernie knew how to rake in cash.Died in prison, 12 years in stir. BIH.
“Behind every great fortune, lies a great crime” - Balzac
We live in a world that only rewards wealth. Very few people care how you acquire it.
Love the evolution of the quote.“Behind every great fortune, lies a great crime” - Balzac
While searching I found a few different versions of this saying. Yet, I have been unable to locate this maxim in a work written by Honoré de Balzac:Behind every great fortune there is a crime.
—Balzac
Balzac published a series of interlinked novels called “La Comédie Humaine” or “The Human Comedy”, and “Le Père Goriot” was part of this series. Eventually all were translated into English, and here is a rendering of the statement above published in 1896: 2Le secret des grandes fortunes sans cause apparente est un crime oublié, parce qu’il a été proprement fait.
Here is another translation into English that was published in 1900: 3The secret of a great success for which you are at a loss to account is a crime that has never been found out, because it was properly executed.
Note that Honoré de Balzac did not pronounce a general rule that larceny was at the root of all large fortunes. However, the simplified statement that is popular in modern times is arguably more provocative and consequently more memorable. The secret of a great fortune made without apparent cause is soon forgotten, if the crime is committed in a respectable way.
Here are additional selected citations in chronological order. At the base of every great fortune there is a great crime.
He got the longest sentence of all!I believe his lawyer sought a 12 year sentence in 2009. Guess it didn’t matter much that he got a longer sentence.

Hard to believe he wasn't on our BOT!Bernie "made off" with millions.
Bite your tongue 👅. First he would have scammed those greedy chumps of everything they owned before moving on to the general fund. In return students and their parents would have faced ten fold more than the normal nonsense in education costs just to make those clowns whole again. And they would have had Harrisburg pass a Law justifying the reimbursement.Hard to believe he wasn't on our BOT!

He would have been a good pick for PSU's new president. A match made in hell!Sandy should have hired him.
