Some of my favorites...

Aretha Franklin
Whitney
Martina McBride
Tina Turner
Anita Baker

Wow, no Mariah? I would say her and Whitney have most powerful ranges. They were great vehicles for pop-songs but lacked artistry. Karen Carpenter had pristine voice but Carpenters were pretty bland. I like Emmylou Harris, Aretha more. Joni Mitchell had most unique vocal style and brilliant songwriter. In end, I always go back to Eva Cassidy. Pure voice, across all genres and artistic interpretation was off charts. Never got famous enough to produce own songs before passing away tragically at 33.

The top tier is Whitney Houston. Everyone else is second tier.

There is an old documentary on the bayou in Georgetown. The clip from Eva’s benefit tribute is heartbreaking.

For all of you who forgot to list Ella, which is all of you, you’re wrong.

timbre, timing, improv, range.

Her Berlin How High the Moon performance is truly extraordinary.

My top 5 in no particular order.

Aretha Franklin
Celine Dion
Whitney Houston
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday

Says you. This is like saying X was unequivocally the best baseball player.
Yep. That is my opinion on women singers. My opinion is that Whitney Houston is number 1 and everyone else both current and in history are far inferior to her. My Mount Rushmore for women singers would have a huge likeness of Whitney Houston and nobody else.

Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

Whitney had extraordinary range, but I generally view her as the onset of the horrific modern female vocal trend of completely sacrificing any sense of timing for displays of technical prowess (perhaps best illustrated by Carey).

BTW, if you really want to have a serious discussion beyond popular music, in terms of current artists, J'nai Bridges.

Although mostly confined to the Blues, Francine Reed is awesome as well.

We have an opera fan in the house.

I enjoy Whitney Houston's music so you say I'm ignorant because Whitney is horrific. I should be listening to someone called J'nai Bridges. I never heard of Bridges.

This message board really puzzles me. This thread asked people to identify the music they enjoy. Can't people have disparate opinions without being attacked? This kind of nonsense happens on this board all the time. If I like strawberry ice cream and you like butter pecan then I'm an ignorant jerk for not liking the ice cream that you like. Bizarre. Our modern culture doesn't allow for individuality. Different opinions aren't respected. There is no attempt at politeness or civility. If someone has an opinion that differs from your opinion then they must be denigrated and harassed until they change their opinion to yours. Respectful debate isn't tolerated. This is one way that our society has regressed over the past few decades in my opinion.
