I enjoy Whitney Houston's music so you say I'm ignorant because Whitney is horrific. I should be listening to someone called J'nai Bridges. I never heard of Bridges.

This message board really puzzles me. This thread asked people to identify the music they enjoy. Can't people have disparate opinions without being attacked? This kind of nonsense happens on this board all the time. If I like strawberry ice cream and you like butter pecan then I'm an ignorant jerk for not liking the ice cream that you like. Bizarre. Our modern culture doesn't allow for individuality. Different opinions aren't respected. There is no attempt at politeness or civility. If someone has an opinion that differs from your opinion then they must be denigrated and harassed until they change their opinion to yours. Respectful debate isn't tolerated. This is one way that our society has regressed over the past few decades in my opinion.
LE: I would also put Whitney Houston at the top of my list. I see her as a clear No. 1.

But I would also add that there are a lot of other really good female singers. I also like Linda Ronstadt quite a bit. (It's a shame that Parkinson's ended her singing career prematurely.)

I'm also mildly surprised that nobody has mentioned Adele. At least I don't recall seeing her name mentioned in any of the previous posts in this thread. I could possibly have missed it, though.

I like Linda Ronstadt's Nelson Riddle albums. There are great. When I'm in the mood I like Natalie Cole too.

Edith Piaf
Belinda Carlisle
Kate Bush
Josie Cotton
Annie Lennox
Terri Nunn

Looking at your signature photo, Lafayette, I would suggest that no singer in history could sing as good as Koufax could pitch!

I agree on Eva Cassidy as one who had a great voice. Her version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is phenomenal. I will be dancing to that version at my daughters wedding in August. She had a great voice and was taken too soon.

Great lists. A few others no one seems to have listed from what I saw:

Tina Turner
Joni Mitchell
Mama Cass Elliott.
Karen Carpenter
Dionne Warwick
Stevie Nicks
EDIT: Psu1969a listed 3 of these, but did not see it at the top of page 2

Koufax was, indeed, money, But so was the Chairman of the Board. He is my personal favorite, and many others' as well.

Karen carpenter
Patsy cline
Etta james
Barbara streisand
Martha Davis/Chrissy Hynde. Very similar in voice and styles.

While much of what you say is true, your initial post in this thread was: “The top tier is Whitney Houston. Everyone else is second tier.” And you said that in response to another poster who didn’t include Whitney Houston in his list.

It seems to me that you were disrespecting his opinion, as well as the opinions of anyone else who didn’t pick Whitney. But that’s just my opinion.

There is but one answer to this. Nobody said it, but it's so obvious, this most underrated female singer of all time...there are many great ones but Marilyn McCoo stands alone. So many hits, so many great songs...greatest voice of the era. Stand down.

If you need more convincing...Perfect pitch and tone. Smoother than butter on a biscuit.

Dolores o’Riordan (RIP).

The Irish accent adds to the greatness of her vocals for me

Obli - That sig pic of yours has we a little curious. I cannot identify (for certain) the fellow with the cigarette, the fellow with the 16 Oz. (wife beater size) Budweiser and the gal. Do you mind helping me out?

You want hairs to stick up on the back of your neck. Ms. Betty Buckley with no microphone! One of the greatest voices ever!

No Grace Slick on your extended list? I could listen to “Somebody to Love” over and over.

I’m sure some won’t get past the twang, but if you just listen to the tone and emotion, I would add Jennifer Nettles to the list of contenders.

I was thinking of her as well. I don't like her politics but girl has some pipes! No auto tune here.

My childhood orthodontist in SEPA, who them became my kids orthodontist, had a neice who was struggling to make it in the music scene in NYC. As I had worked in the City for 15 years we often swapped stories about the highs and lows of Manhattan living. After many trials and tribulations PINK turned out just fine...
