Find me a more disgraceful professional franchise at any sport in the world, than this joke of a team?
They haven’t won a playoff series since Jimmy Carter was in office!

And they never will under curreny ownership. However, if you are a Pittsburgh sports fan, Pitt has won 27 football National Championships since the last Bucco playoff series win.;)

A little dramatic. At least the Pirates recently had a couple playoff appearances and one of the 4 best records in baseball. Browns fans would kill for that.

I get the general sentiment. But the team overperformed last year and has hung around .500 this year with a slew of injuries.
The trade with Tampa last year could go down as one of the worst in the last 25 years.
There was an article in the Post Gazette which talked about Marte and his low baseball IQ. Marte? Polanco makes Marte look like Derek Jeter from a baseball IQ standpoint. Hanging their hats on these two and trading Austin Meadows was horrific.

It seems like teams like the Browns are worse because football has a salary cap and I don't know if they had a salary floor in the past but they have one now. In terms of player salary, teams spending by rule isn't very different. So why are some teams usually good and other teams usually bad? I'm genuinely curious. I wish sports journalists would delve into that subject. Instead we get fluff, like so-and-so player called out his coach, or vice-versa.

The Cincinnati Reds are just as bad. Small market and not able to spend to keep up with the big boys. It was amazing the Cubs were so futile as long as they were, but they finally got the right ownership, while the Cardinals have arguably the best run organization in MLB.

Some small market teams have no trouble competing year after year. Have to be well run from rookie league through arbitration years, but it's doable. Just need to commit to hiring the right people to make it happen.

They have had a ton of injuries this year. That said, their annual yard sale will take place in July.

Little TV revenue = Low Payroll = Losing Team
It is all quite simple. The Pittsburgh area can no longer support a major league team. The should have moved to Kansas City 25 years ago before the taxpayers were bilked to pay for PNC Park.

The Pirates only hope is a sugar daddy owner who pours money into the team to feed his or her ego.

Not many are consistently run well and compete for the division title every year. There’s a reason the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and now Cubs and Astros are winners. Look at the spending. The Cardinals are consistently one of the best teams in baseball and certainly do everything the right way as you note. Hard to think of other extremely well run, smaller market teams that are consistently competitive. Maybe the Cleveland Indians ?

The no salary cap, revenue sharing era of MLB makes owning a baseball franchise a great money making investment for indifferent owners like Bob Nutting. Have a nice ballpark, fireworks, and bobbleheads enough people will show up to show the world things aren’t so bad. It’s sad and unlikely to change since Nutting is young, passing the franchise down to his daughter, and just isn’t interested in creating/maintaining a World Series caliber roster.

Yup, pretty much. There were Mark Cuban rumors floating around, but never happened and may be some conflict in interest with other sports franchise ownership.

The biggest problem with Nutting is a large percentage of his billion $ plus net worth is the value of the franchise. He doesn't have deep pockets despite his billionaire status. But he certainly has made enough money over the years, and received enough from revenue sharing to have kept a much better roster together and built a much better pipeline of talent. I'm not sure how to do it, but Pirates fans need to stick together and force him to sell. Embarrass him with a fan strike where literally nobody goes into the game until the second inning (or not at all). Make the spotlight too bright for him to handle and he'll pocket his billion dollars and disappear.
