OT - State College recs

Sometime you can make a plan for an hour Wednesday drive to Lewisburg. Lewisburg Farmers Market, Fishers and/or Byerly Brothers Butcher Shop, and wrap up at Susquehanna Smokehouse.
Thanks. That's on the way between NYC and State College, not far off RTE 80. I'll try to remember and time a trip on a Wednesday.

Wegman's surprisingly has a pretty "decent" cheese selection.. There is a small shop also on Calder way with a small but varied selection as well.. As for Butchers... I have not been to it but have heard good things about a small town butcher in Millheim which is close to SC.. Going to try it out.. The one thing I can tell you Tikk is that you have some pretty awesome neighbors...;-)
I live in South Carolina. I miss the cheese display at Wegmans. If you lived here, you would call the Wegmans cheese section the best ever. Almost no one sells great cheese down here, or if they do, it's a very small selection. There is very little I don't love about South Carolina but lack of cheese selection is one of them.

I like 192 even better though.
My daughter and son-in-law sold their house in Pine Grove Mills (State College schools) and bought a house with a dozen acres in the Penns Valley school district. My initial reaction was a little less than enthusiastic because of the change in schools for 2 of my grandkids.
Driving to see the new property my daughter told me to quit growling, you have forever told me if you ever get a chance to buy a place along brush valley road do it. So we did. I quit growling about schools. It is beautiful through there.

Why not one out and the other back?

@tikk10 If you do this in the winter, take Rt 192 or I-80 to Lewisburg.

Rt 45 has a hilly + curvy stretch in the forest that can accumulate ice. Eastbound is downhill, not much fun when icy. Westbound (uphill) should be OK most of the time, even with a little ice.

Also beware the Hartleton speed trap on Rt 45, especially on PSU event weekends. It's like driving on a military base -- if you are driving exactly the speed limit, you're speeding.

PVSD is really a pretty good district too to be honest. SCASD is the best in the area--but it's really the best for students on the edges of the bell curve. If you're in the middle, I think PSVS might even be a better place for you. That's the impression I get talking to parents and administrators, anyway....

That is the place on Calder Way I was talking about.. not the hugest selection but what they have is very good..
It used to be a much more extensive offering of cheese, but Wegmans crushed that. Still a great place to go though

If you use 45 stop at Burkholder's Country Market outside of Millheim, IMO the best whoopie pies around.

My Mom and my wife would like a word with you. You will never get me to say whose whoopie pies are better, but that probably has to do with them using the same recipe.

Bumping to ask whether anyone knows of any wildlife eradicators in the area, say if one had a flying squirrel in the attic they wanted removed prior to closing.

Buy rat traps and bait them with peanut butter. I may or may not have used this technique when I bought my current house.

I can't advise on area squirrel removal, but can offer this: it didn't get in by ringing the doorbell.

It found a hole somewhere. Which means other critters can get in. Plus (depending on hole location) water from rain, snow/ice melts, and/or runoff.

Though you haven't really lived in Central PA until you've chased a bat with a broom ...

I had a huge squirrel problem in a house I owned 20 years ago. There was a sloped wall in the master bedroom and he used to roll an acorn down the wall, go get it, and repeat all night. I fixed the problem with a Have-A-Heart trap and a 55 gallon trash can filled with water. Peanut butter and sunflower seeds cannot be resisted. And in the end when they are wet, they prove to be nothing but rats with fluffy tails. I'm going strait to hell.

I tried the Have-A-Heart trap(because of the wife), Flying squirrels were too light to trigger it. All I ended up doing with it was feeding them.

I can loan you one of our cats, if you want. They'd find a flying mouse to be an extra challenge. Sorry, haven't had to hire anyone for this myself anytime recently. I 2nd Jefe's advice though--find, and plug/screen those holes!

Thanks for the responses. The holes issue is being taken care of, the squirrel removal issue is a matter of waiting on a guy who's evidently on vacation. The squirrel is in an attic space that won't be used so it's not as if it's going to prevent move-in. But we'd still like to take care of it. From the inspection report, which helpfully employed a yellow arrow for those with weak squirrel-spotting skills.

This is very true. I had a big squirrel problem ~15 years ago (shortly after I moved into my house). Had a guy come out and he fixed ~40 access points the squirrels had made/found.
This lasted until a couple years ago, and the squirrels are back in the attic.
Also, raccoons.

You definitely need to remove the access points.

Must not be far from us. We live just on the State College side of the line between SC and PV School Districts. We drove Brush Valley Road nearly every day when our kids were growing up.

We used a service, and they were very good. Mrs. Roar is on the road right now, and won't answer her phone, but I'll let you know the name later today/tomorrow.

We had grackles get into our duct work and make a mess of things. Several relatives with squirrel/racoon stories over the years, but they are not local so it doesn't help. Seems squirels like attics, and raccoons like fireplaces.

Squirrels are so destructive. Rat trap with bait should do the trick and won't cost you more than a few dollars.

Squirrels in the woods are great. Squirrels around human property equal damage. I'm a lineman for a communications company and I'm guessing that squirrels cost my company at least $50 million a year in damage. Im very confident that's a low ball number. Damn things!

Ron Gilligan Auctioneering -- for all your squirrel selling needs.
I genuinely appreciate the Ron Gilligan rec, from both you and Cholley above. Some really interesting garbage in the few that I looked at, will keep an eye out.

Tikk. We used a guy for groundhogs and he did a good job. Maybe worth a call on your part

Thanks HG. Will call first thing tomorrow. It'll probably turn out to be the same guy who's on vacation, lol, but definitely worth a shot. Thank you.

So it looks like I'm moving to State College (at least part time) and I want to leverage the board's collective local knowledge. I'm pretty familiar with State College with respect to geography and places to eat, but not necessarily places to shop. I know there won't be the same selection of, say, cheese, that can be easily found in big cities, but maybe there's some shop that comes close. (WC Clarke's? Yelp suggests maybe?) I know there's a Whole Foods, but are there any good butchers? And how about sea food (by the pound, not restaurants)? I'm doubtful of the latter given State College's lack of a coast. Any good farmer's markets? Also interested in talking to a local woodworker/carpenter for some possible custom work (relatively simple stuff like storage and shelves, maybe furniture).

Apologies to Tom if this is too off-topic, I won't fight if it needs to come down.
Best local butcher is Nittany Meats just outside of Bellefonte. Pretty basic but fresh daily. If you don’t mind a drive, there’s a place just south of Lewistown called Benner’s Meat Market. It’s a large butcher shop with lots of smoked and marinaded meats, bacon, cheeses, beef sticks, and home made side dishes. Worth the drive.

Case in point at Benners... some sausage for your viewing pleasure.

Have you had their flavor-injected hams? If not, call for their current selection and order one sometime. Good stuff.
