Greetings all,

I had a Dr. checkup in mid December, and he suggested I lose a few pounds. I was 5'10 and 183 pounds with 312 cholesterol. I gave up fast food, have not drank since NYE, and have been going to the gym 3-4 days a week at 5:00 AM where I jog 6-1/2 to 7 miles the first hour and then walk 6 miles the next 1-1/2 hours. I am down to a pretty good wight at 156 but my issue is that I kind of like my routine and since I am at a healthy weight now, I am worried that if I alter my routine I may start gaining weight, but I do not want to stay with the current routine and keep losing weight. Any suggestions?

I also gave up almost all meat/eggs in general because I do not want to be put on a statin and I have blood work scheduled for 4/1...

Thanks,

Thanks,

5'10" 183 pounds and you had to LOSE weight? Are you a chick?

I believe that God gave each individual a specific number of "life chips". When those chips are used up, you die. You can earn more life chips by working out and eating right. You can burn them by abusive intake and/or lacking exercise. Of course, working out and eating right isn't fun, perhaps it is even sobersided. So the theory equates "fun" to "live expectancy".

In the end, you only have so much fun. How do you want to use it?

I have to agree that 5'10" and 183 lbs seems fine. I'm 5'11" and right around the same weight and I'm pretty thin, especially compared to most guys my age (58).

Regardless, 2.5 hours of cardio is quite a workout. I'm no fitness expert, but if you cut down the cardio to 30 to 60 minutes and add in some lifting to build muscle you should be fine.

Regarding the cholesterol, I hate to be discouraging, but mine was a little high (not anywhere near as high as yours) so I decided to try diet and exercise at first. I did it for a year and it did nothing (my cholesterol actually went up a bit). My doctor said it's typically hereditary. So now I'm on a statin and will be getting re-checked sometime soon. I have managed to keep up the gym habit though so that's good.

Ha, my weight was up 10 pounds over the previous year.
I mean, we're all built differently, and carry weight differently, but at 5'11", when I got down below 190, I was thin. If I were down in the 160 range, people would think I'm part of the Dallas Buyers Club.

I can't speak to cholesterol - mine's always been pristine and I like my pizza and wings (I do work out regularly ... mostly lifting, a bit of cardio), whereas lots of folks I know who are health nuts have high cholesterol, so I just laugh at their plight. As the other poster mentioned, I think a lot of it is hereditary.

may just be me but I stopped eating much red meat, etc, cholesterol stayed high, said eff it and went back to normal diet of meatloaf, burgers, eggs, etc and it actually went down some. had to be some other connection as my exercise was the same as well.

Thanks,
I share your feelings on statins. Based on your screen name, I believe we are about the same age.
I have Hypercholesterolemia as well. Thanks Dad!
At some point, I tried to move away from processed grains and was eating more cheese, full fat yogurt for snacks, breakfast, etc. I exercise regularly, but less than prior to covid and a move across the country.

A year ago I had an irregular heartbeat one saturday morning. After about 5 hours, I went to the ER. Nothing found. Had a follow-up with a cardiologist. Cholesterol was 286. Also did a calcium test and had, what I thought was slight, calcification in my aorta, but it apparently puts me in the 95th percentile for my age.

Cardiologist wants me to go on a statin immediately. I tell him NO, that I want to get a baseline based on some diet changes. I cut out "unnecessary dairy" and deli meat sandwiches for lunch. I also avoided super high cholesterol foods like Shrimp and Pizza. I also started taking CholestOff from Naturemade. 3 months later, cholesterol was down to 236. Cardiologist was shocked that I did that without meds. That said, he still pushed a statin, becuase he went to a US med school, and apparently, there is some evidence that people on a statin see less cardiac events.

I agrede to go on the lowest dose of Lipitor. I continue to take Cholestoff (though I switch to Plant Sterols and Pantesin from Swanson.com as they are ~20% of the price). At this point, I still avoid unnecessary dairy (full fat yogurt, cheese as a staple snack) but relaxed my vigilence. I eat pizza occassionally, eat meat regularly, eggs very occassionally, etc. A year later, cholesterol is 170. I ultimately want to get off the statin. My Dad was part of the 20% that sees side effects from statins and frankly, I think it's crazy to think that you can take a chemical for decades and not experience other low-res side effects. We'll see.

Here is my reco.
-See where your cholesterol is on 4/1. If needed, look at the Plant sterols (fiber binds cholesterol int he blood stream) and Pantesin(supplement that reduces cholesterol production in the liver like a statin). Let me if you need more info.
-Depending on your tri-glycerides, start taking a fish oil pill daily. I've been doing this for years and despite high cholesterol, my tri-glycerides have never been high. FWIW, I also take turmeric daily for general inflammation (muscle, joint, cardiovascular)
-As others have said, 2.5hrs of cardio is extreme, but if you like it, keep doing it. At some point, your weight will plateau. Depending on your lipid panel, you may also look to add some other foods back into your diet that could balance. As others have said, you could look to replace the 1.5hrs of walking with an hour of weights. The added muscle is much more important than the cardio, long-term for weight mgmt and overall health.

Bottom line, you'll know more after 4/1 and can make adjustments. Congrats on dropping ~30lbs in under 4 months!

FYI, Lipitor/atorvastatin and Crestor/Rosuvastatin can't provide you with what is considered a low-intensity dosage of a statin, only medium and high-intensity doses. You might ask your doctor if a low-intensity statin/dose would be an option for you as a way to step down and eventually stop.

Thanks,
How old are you?

That is an absolute f ton of cardio. Cardio is great for heart health of course and needed, but awful for building and retaining muscle. Muscle mass is a leading indicator of having a heathy and active body as we age.

I’d be curious how much fat you lost. You may have just incinerated muscle mass through a lot of cardio and calorie restrictions.

Not trying to beat you up, but be careful to retain muscle mass when losing weight and incorporating weight training.

Greetings all, thank you for all of your responses. For the person who asked, I am 51.

I have noticed that all of the cardio burned up most of the fat, but a lot of muscle as well, my legs are very thin, where they used to be muscular in my marathon training days 20 years ago.

I plateaued at 154 pounds and my cholesterol dropped to 172. Triglycerides dropped from the 600s to 185 (still high). Blood pressure went from borderline hypertension to 125/73. The Dr. was fairly surprised, but said it occasionally happens with people who make wholesale lifestyle changes. I was going to celebrate with Popeyes, but called an audible and ate a panera sandwich instead.

Thanks all for your kind words and advice!
