OT: What is the best pizza joint in Pennsylvania, and why?

IMO, the Lehigh Valley is loaded with great NY style pizza shops. Crossroads in Hellertown was fantastic, but I believe they closed. I also believe the Matey's are somehow affiliated, so the that recipe may still be around. Steve's Pizza in Palmer Township is also great, but they can be inconsistent. Colonial Pizza in downtown Easton is very good, but a little different with the sauce on top. It's one of those love it or hate it styles. They make a great white pizza as well. Out of all those, I like/liked Crossroads the best. Just good flavor, consistent.

Grew up on Steve's Pizza! Excellent! Also just down the street (not pizza )- Richard's Cheesesteaks and Jimmy's style hot dogs!! Good Greek food !

Matey's Crossroads sadly closed as Ray and Diane Matey retired. They claimed they were going to stay open until they could sell the Crossroads hotel and recipes but sadly it looks like they closed before they found a buyer. His brother Roy owns Matey's American Pie Company, which you find in grocery stores in the Lehigh Valley. He also owns Matey's Famous Steaks and Pizza in Fountain Hill. The cheesesteaks were similar to each other but not exactly the same. The same could be said with the pizza. I have heard the brothers did not get along so that might be why the food was similar but a little different at the same time. Lehigh Pizza close to Lehigh University is very good pizza. IMO they best way to judge pizza is to get a cheese pizza without any toppings. The cheese and sauce flavor is what determines if it is really good. You can then add the topping(s) of your choice.

I miss the old Capri Pizza near the movie theaters inside the Lycoming Mall. The guys that worked there were off the boat Sicilians. Loved going to the movies at "the Mall" back in the 1980s. Best pizza in the Williamsport area to go along with the best arcade in the area.

Wow. Did this post ever bring back memories. LOL

Have you tried Vesouvio's (sp?) in that strip mall on the golden strip? I think there used to be a K-Mart or something in there. Oh, and I think the other movie theater was near there.. Thin, but not crunchy, crust. Lots of cheese and pepperoni grease. That was my favorite pizza in the Williamsport area.

Any OIP will always be my favorites for either pizza or subs.

But I'll toss a few out for old friends of mine I grew up with: Nonno's OIP in Dillsburg and Pizza Mia in Bellefonte.

Stuccios, in Burick (Berwick) pa if it's still there. Always when I was in High School.

Just a nod to Zavino in Philly, 13th and Sansom ( I believe ) caddy corner from El Vez makes a great pizza. BUT, and I MEAN BUT to die for is their one cut of meat on their Charcuterie offering, Baby Jesus. OMFGD that is to live for.!!!!

Where are all the posts from the Pitt trolls? They know way more about pizza than they do football.

Do you mean Venice Pizza? Have had their pizza a couple times and it has always been good. They are actually on the site where the movie theaters use to be.

Pitt guy here. But, we don't have to be enemies on pizza, do we? Here in and around the Pittsburgh area, some of my favorites are Beto's on Banksville, Mineo's in Squirrel Hill, Pizza Italia in Bloomfield, Mama Lucia's in Northway Mall, Messina's in Wagner's Market plaza on Middle Road in Hampton Township, and Caliente's (both locations, in Bloomfield, and Hampton Twp).

Whoa, then it's a TRAY of pizza! ;) Damn, talking about pizza and Step putting pics of Old Forge pizza up is really making me hungry!!!
When I was a kid, it was a tray of Andy's Pizza in Peckville. Damn that was good after a Friday night football game. Then sometime around high school age we started going down to Old Forge and haven't looked back (but I hear Andy's is still there - may have to check it out). Been to most in Old Forge but somehow we settled on Arcaro and Genell's. If you want a real "treat" have 1 piece of their white pizza. I say one, cuz otherwise they will take you out on a stretcher it will clog your arteries...but what the hell, can't get a tray of real pizza down here in Maryland! And don't tell me Ledo's is real pizza!
Andy's is terrific. Unique flavor. It is not only still there but has not changed in fifty years.

Mama Lucia's closed in Northway Mall, there is one in Wexford . Caliente has 3 locations now, add Doughboys in the Rocks, Napoli in Monroeville, Aiello's in Squirrel Hill and Penn township, Tony's in Sarver, J&S in Lower Burrell, Graziano's by Childrens Hospital, and Fiore's on Capital Ave just to name a few. All have consistently been rated high and won various contests and awards.

Agree on Tuzzi's, all Old Forge places, Matey's and Crossroads in Hellertown. I think Matuccis in Mt. Carmel doesn't compare. Altoona Hotel was unique.

Park Pizza in the Port makes a nice pizza. The best ever was Johnny Perroto's on Washington Blvd. He tossed em' w/ cornmeal.

Park Pizza:

Park is about a mile from my house. It is good, but Bart's is better IMHO. They even put one on Broad St In Mountoursville within the last few yrs. When did Perroto's go out of biz? I'm not sure if I ever had theirs.

Bart's is good. I think the one in Montoursville was sold. Probably still open though. Perottos's lasted until maybe 1990ish. Was close to Joey's Place on the Blvd. across from the college.

My vote is Vincent's, on Ardmore Boulevard. Loaded and chewy and fantastic after six beers.
Pizzeria Beddia, Fishtown section if Philly. Rated #1 pizza in country by Bon Apetite magazine. It's the best if the best.

On the west coast of PA, It's Posti's Pizza located in Evans City and Mars. I am biased, it's my brother's place, but the pizza is hand-tossed and baked in a stone oven.

On the east coast, It's Dugan's Pub located in Luzerne. I am biased, I cook there on the weekends, also hand tossed stone oven.

Both are perfect.

From Step.eng69
"YEP

Revello’s Pizza was established by our family in the summer of 1967, formerly known as Pelosi’s. Located in the heart of downtown Old Forge, Pennsylvania, the pizza capital of the world...."

Very cool... am I understanding Step.Eng69 that your family owned Revello's ? - wow - looks like I'll have to do a road trip...
No, I was ln a hurry to leave the office, on my way to a cousins wake.....copied the advertisement and no time to edit.
As you know, many are confusing pan pizza with Old Forge. I see PennsyO is comparing Victory Pig to Old Forge...two different types. Pan pizza seems heavy and greasy, where ad Old Forge is very light. I believe you or someone else metioned the very light crust with Old Forge pizza.

I'm a pizza lover, and rotate my weekend selections from Old Forge, to pan.. Pizza Perfect, Pizza Loven & Bowling Alley on the lake highway. Round pizza will include Bernies in Dallas, Gerry's sweet pizza in Wilkes Barre's lower end and throw in Grotto at Harveys Lake. Oh, I forgot the Big Ten which makes pan, round and wood fire.

Carl Kern is the owner of the Big Ten, was a terrific athlete at Lake Lehman in the late 60's and played at Ohio State under Woody. I played football & baseball against his older brothers, but not Karl.

As any good buckeye alum, Karl also sells Penn State Creamery icecream.
