I kid about these posts, but I am proud of my little girl and her goal is to play for PSU.

We were in Downingtown on Saturday and our future PSU goalie won 4 games to a championship. The last game came down to a shootout and she stopped all 3 shot attempts. As a parent of a goalie, it is nerve racking.

Then she played another 4 games with another team. 3 games in a row with shut outs.. then championship game she lost her steam and gave up 5 in a 5-0 loss. She said 2 were all on her, 1 was a ref mistake, and 2 were great shots!

Congrats to your daughter... I was a soccer goalie and I can assure you that you are far more nervous than she is. I used to look forward to shootouts. At least in soccer there was nothing to lose for a goalie. Far more pressure on the shooters.

Yes, but it is a big freaking net to defend. lol

You were back at USTC? And didn't tell me? Lousy day for traveling with the snow. I couldn't have made it anyway -- was at a youth wrestling tournament.

Glad to read that your daughter continues to excel. Perhaps she'll give you a tip or two for how to play goal in your indoor soccer league. ;)

Enjoy your next four to eight years with your daughter Ward, the time will pass unbelievably fast, but I’m sure you’ll have a great time as I did w/ my kids and grandkids.

Don’t know if I’ll be around in eight years to hear your hockey stories, the hair on the back of my neck raises much these days. I think it’s the grim reaper teasing me. :( If I’m around, you’ll know where to find me.

I am a jerkface for not letting you know. The snow was no problem. We arrived as it was starting and left after it ended smooth sail for us.

My soccer season is over. I broke my ankle twice and my wife said I had to stop. I did finish both games though. I am an idiot.

Sadly, a local team is trying to get my kid to switch schools to play with them and she is warming up to the idea. Her school is great, but her friends are all playing with the private school. We will see...

Step you rule! You will outlive us all. You have the best Dr in the World!

:) Believe me the road will have many twists and turns over the next 4 years, some expected and some unexpected. Hang on, go with it and do your best to enjoy it. Like Step said it will fly by faster than you think.

Ned please keep us updated on your daughter. I love reading your stories. Thank you so much for the advice you have given me so far and I am sure I will be asking you for more in the future. Best of luck to you and your family.

She is about ready to start her freshmen season. We are all excited. So far it's been a very intense but rewarding experience for her. She loves the team and she loves the coaches. The HC played for Missy at Towson. It's a small, small world. Everyone knows everyone.

Fall ball was an adjustment....a BIG adjustment (academically, mentally and physically). Thankfully, my daughter was prepared so she's fine but some of her more highly touted club teammates who went to Hopkins have quit already. One semester and they have quit the team and dropped out of school....and Hopkins is pass/fail for all first semester freshmen. IMO, when you get to the next level, they don't care who you are or where you came from or what your resume looks like. The only things that matter are attitude and performance. Gotta have some grit. That goes for on the field as well as the classroom

I usually get a calls after practices so, I really appreciate that she wants to share the experience with me. She talks to my wife about the academic stuff and me on the lax stuff.

I have to be honest, the recruiting thing was not a pleasant experience because she was strung along by so many schools (6) only to just miss out. Fortunately, it all worked out in the end and she's as happy as a clam. She's happy with her school and happy with her team. That is all that matters.

Stay tuned...

This is how it works in our family as well. I didn't know my kid was in the band until she brought home a tuba. I also asked if there was something wrong with her IPad, and she was grounded from it for getting a 97 in math. My wife is tough.

Sadly, a local team is trying to get my kid to switch schools to play with them and she is warming up to the idea. Her school is great, but her friends are all playing with the private school. We will see...

ah yes, recruiting is not limited to college. there is recruiting by players and coaches for club teams, and recruiting by coaches and players from other schools to get athletes/their families to switch schools. no matter how many rules are enacted about these situations, folks continue to find ways to do them. No perfect answer. Ned can tell you a lot about this as well.

My soccer season is over. I broke my ankle twice and my wife said I had to stop. I did finish both games though. I am an idiot.

sounds as though your better half is the brains in the family. ;) most guys don't even finish a game if they break an ankle, and they certainly don't rush back for more pain.

So, so true. You can be all-everything in HS, but in college it's an entirely different environment. Plus it takes a lot of discipline to figure out how to fit in athletics time commitments as well as academics, added to living away from home and trying to keep up with a college social life. Hopkins, as you well know, is not an easy school, plus they take their LAX very seriously. This really puts your daughter's friend(s) in a bind, as most of the 'ships at the better programs are pretty much spoken for with regards to the next couple of classes. Kind of a shot to the ego to go from D1 at Hopkins to DII or DIII, but they may not have much of a choice if they want to play LAX in college.

The step up to the collegiate level really freaks some kids out especially those who have never encountered any adversity in their academics and/or athletics. That's where it helps if you have a healthy dose of grit before you get there. Hey, most of the freshmen in my daughter's class had a bit of a freshman freakout....it happens. Recognize it, then roll with it but don't lose your head over it.

The statistics say that roughly 45% will not complete the 4 years worth of their eligibility. You have to love it.

Ned, what are the stats on goalie's?

No actually, I can't find anything on goalies. The attrition thing has been going back and forth for quite awhile. I googled "collegiate sports attrition %" and I found this interesting blog posting.

https://new.berecruited.com/athlete...llege-athletes-quit-cut-or-get-asked-to-leave

Keep in mind it's a blog and not a verifiable source but it does mention some interesting stuff. I have found a Brown University survey of its student athletes and a Brown student news paper article that discusses the survey. The attrition number they mention is 33%. I have seen threads on Laxpower that mention attrition rates for all college sports from 33-35%. Not the 45% that I mentioned earlier but still a significant number none the less.

The original point still holds, it's very challenging to be a student athlete.

That is a good blog. thanks for sharing Ned.

You might be mixing up two numbers. Failure to complete four years of eligibility vs failure to graduate.

FTR - a 45% attrition rate is almost exactly the dropout rate (defined as a failure to get a degree within 6 years of first enrolling) for normal college students.

My little ice hockey player is 4. He plays in a league of 4-7 year-olds. He scored his first goal last night. I was home with strep throat. I had not missed a game or practice (I help out the coaches a little) until last night. My wife takes video of all of his shifts, as we like to memorialize the kids' first goals for the families whenever they happen (hockey is a big deal around here). Unfortunately, it seems that she didn't hit the button and we didn't get it. So I missed getting to watch him have the whole experience. He is so proud. At his request, we've been doing a little extra practice out on our pond. He got to tell me all about it when he got home. I am both thrilled and disappointed, though I'm determined to only let him see half of that. I also enjoy being a dad.

She didn't get his first goal on tape?? Off with her head!! :) I am sure he will score plenty more and every time it will be great. I teared up when my kid scored her first Lax goal, but I am a big softy.

Im glad you said that. I did the same thing last fall when mine scored her first NCAA goal...al beit a scrimmage but never the less.

An aside, when she scored, her coach pulled her off the field before the next draw and gave her a hug. Women's sports are cool!

Not only is she getting playing time as a Freshman, she has scored. That is great news!

Tom McAndrew ,

My daughter will be playing at the training center (next to Longstreth) tomorrow morning. Her team will be tested. The best club teams in PA will be there competing (Excalibur, WC Eagles, Central Penn etc..) She is on team Majestyx Purple U14. Should be a good gauge to see how good her team is.

This is a link to the event, I hope it works.

best of luck to her team and to her. That is some top-level competition she'll be facing.

appreciate the heads up. Alas, I'll be at a wrestling tournament.

Update for those interested,

First game of the day she plays the WC Eagles(WP), which is hosting this tourney at 7am. WC scored 2 goals in 2 mins(Faye let a soft one go in). Then our girls stormed back to tie it at 2-2. WC went up 4-2(Faye let in a softie knuckle-ball shot). Our team ended up tying it with 1 min to go. Faye played ok about 7 saves.

2nd game shutout maybe 1 save won 9-0

3rd game vs Central Penn(CP) This was a bloodbath. I forget the final score around 7-0. Our girls got crushed. CP just kept running the same play over and over and it was impossible for our girls to defend. I don't think Faye gave up a bad goal and had several nice saves.

4th game shutout, maybe 2 saves 7-0

She played with the other U-14 for 3 games and it was fun, but I chat with the other parents during those games.

The highlight of the day: The U-16 goalie was late, so Faye had to play for that team against the #1 ranked WC. Wow that team is awesome! Her team lost 5-0, but Faye made about 15 hard saves. She stopped 3 break-aways. I had the goosepimples many times during this game. I was surrounded by WC fans and I was cheering and they were moaning it was great.

After the game, a WC parent asked me what High School my daughter went to. I hammed it up and let him know that she was still in 6th grade.

Update,

Her team won 8-0, 5-0, then face Central Penn again. They were up 2-0 and the wheels feel off the bus. They lost 4-2. Faye said she gave up 1 goal she could have saved. I enjoy that she is honest about her play.

Next week back at the Spooky Nook. The kids love that place.

This week 5-0-1. She played for 2 teams. The 1rst game she gave up 2 goals(1 she said she should have saved) and they tied 2-2. The next 5 all shutouts. Both teams finished 1rst in their pool play.

Next will be the National Indoor Tourney, 3 days of the best. She has WC Eagles in her teams bracket. They are a great group. It is like PSU playing Alabama in football.

This week is NITs in Lancaster! Mini vacation for our family.

Faye and her team are prepped up and ready to beat the WC Eagles(doubt it will happen). 3 days of junk food and field hockey action.

Next I will post a pic of her in a game worn PSU goalie jersey. I am enjoying being a Dad.

Enjoy now, give it a few years and the boys with the high testosterone levels will be swarming and interfering with your JOY

She pinned her "boyfriend" in a wrestling match and made him cry. I am not too worried about that aspect of her life for now.:) My wife is raising her well.

best of luck to her. there was a huge FH tourney at USTC this past Saturday. The FH cars were driving the soccer families crazy, as they were taking all the spots near the turf soccer fields. I checked the brackets, but it did not see your daughter's team listed in the brackets for 14A, 14B, or 14C.

Everybody plays in "fall ball". She may see some playing time this Spring but I have limited expectations. It's all gravy from here on. The main thing is that she's having a positive experience and getting a degree from an incredible college.

@Nittany Ned2 -- seems as though your daughter's team has gotten off to a tough start to start the season. Not sure why they scheduled UMD for their 1st game, and George Mason as their 2nd game. Seems they had a really tough loss on Sunday, getting tied and then beaten in the last 2+ minutes of the game.

Things don't get much easier for them, as UVA and Stanford are their next two opponents. They'll be really tested by the time they get to league play. (Which is rather odd, in that their first league game isn't until nearly 2 months into their season, and then all their league contests are played over a 3-week period.)

With the exception of the Calif. road trip, pretty much all of her games are not all that far from you. I guess the away games @ Winthrop and @ Hofstra are the longest trips.

Good Luck Ned!!

Tom, It is the 1 car for every child these days. I try to get the parents to carpool, but they will not do it. And other parents are happy to take my kid, but they do not have room for the goalie gear, I don't know if it is space of the gear or the smello_O

Oh crap, Friday starts the NITs and she came home from school with a 101 degree fever, headache, and sore throat. I fed her an orange, grapefruit, miso soup, pickled ginger salad, and a little salmon. I hope it does the trick.

Her team has the #1, 6, and 20th ranked teams in her pool. This may be a bloodbath, but I won't tell her that.

I have always been a stickler for fundamentals (passing, catching, non dominant hand) ever since the "Easter Bunny" gave her her first stick at 5...Fundamentals, fundamentals fundamentals.

when they mess up the fundamentals in college, it really stands out, as most of the ladies on the field were stars or super solid players on their HS/tournament teams. Sorry to hear that W&M's team is struggling with the essentials. As you know, everything builds from that foundation.

I left the last game at halftime. I couldn't take it anymore. To stay positive, I told my daughter "Keep your chin up your opportunity is coming. Your job is to prepare for it and make the most of it."

you've been exposed to excellent LAX, so I'm sure it's a challenge for you to watch anything less. That said, don't leave at halftime. Support your daughter AND the team. Her time will come -- sooner than she expects if her conditioning is top-notch, and her fundamentals are sound. (Sorry to preach a bit, but I had a rule about never leaving a game in which my kids were playing, no matter how frustrating it might be to watch.)

Hoping that W&M works out the kinks during their tough early schedule, and hits their stride by conference play.

Her team went 2-0 yesterday. They beat the WC Eagles, a well played game by both sides. Our Goalie played as well as a girl can with a 101 degree fever. She is getting a good nights sleep and hopefully she feels better today. Her team goes against The #6 team in the country tomorrow around noon. This will be the toughest game of the tourney for her team. My guess is a narrow loss, but I also thought her team would lose to the WC Eagles.;)

Her team went 2-0 on Saturday and played great to beat Uprise. They were amped up and won 7-4. So they were 4-0 in the tourney and had a team that was 1-2-1 TCOYO out of VA Beach to win the tourney today. I remembered them and told my kid that they were better than the record. Our team was goofing around before the game, they showed up 10 minutes late for pre-game. As you can expect they lost 4-1. and due to tie breakers they finished 2nd.

The kids were upset with the way they played. I tried to console them to no avail. Here is the sucky part, as my kid was putting away her goalie gear, the rest of the team left without getting their silver medals and having their pictures taken on the stand. I am beyond pissed about this poor sportsmanship. This was not on the coaches, it was on the the parents who get too upset about a bad game. I hope this stuff gets easier.

Back 2 back Champs in NEPA! We are not as good as the MD teams, but we are trying.
Hi Wade, congrats to the team. I was just thinking on the way to work yesterday that I haven't heard from you for a while. Is that you in the background with your daughter next to you?
Keep in touch. Be safe traveling to the tournaments this summer.

Hey Tom! My kid is the tall one on the far right. Your Dr's kid is in front of me(she is the best player in our area). I have a lot of traveling to do this summer Rhode Island, OBX, Va. I wish I was going to the Netherlands, but they are having a FH camp at SEM.

I hope all is well with your crew. Your grand-daughter has been an inspiration to my kid. Go Black Knights!
