I kid about these posts, but I am proud of my little girl and her goal is to play for PSU.
Congrats to your daughter... I was a soccer goalie and I can assure you that you are far more nervous than she is. I used to look forward to shootouts. At least in soccer there was nothing to lose for a goalie. Far more pressure on the shooters.
We were in Downingtown on Saturday and our future PSU goalie won 4 games to a championship. The last game came down to a shootout and she stopped all 3 shot attempts. As a parent of a goalie, it is nerve racking.

Then she played another 4 games with another team. 3 games in a row with shut outs.. then championship game she lost her steam and gave up 5 in a 5-0 loss. She said 2 were all on her, 1 was a ref mistake, and 2 were great shots!
You were back at USTC? And didn't tell me? Lousy day for traveling with the snow. I couldn't have made it anyway -- was at a youth wrestling tournament.
Glad to read that your daughter continues to excel. Perhaps she'll give you a tip or two for how to play goal in your indoor soccer league.
Enjoy your next four to eight years with your daughter Ward, the time will pass unbelievably fast, but I’m sure you’ll have a great time as I did w/ my kids and grandkids.
Don’t know if I’ll be around in eight years to hear your hockey stories, the hair on the back of my neck raises much these days. I think it’s the grim reaper teasing me. If I’m around, you’ll know where to find me.
T. Step
Believe me the road will have many twists and turns over the next 4 years, some expected and some unexpected. Hang on, go with it and do your best to enjoy it. Like Step said it will fly by faster than you think.
She is about ready to start her freshmen season. We are all excited. So far it's been a very intense but rewarding experience for her. She loves the team and she loves the coaches. The HC played for Missy at Towson. It's a small, small world. Everyone knows everyone.
Fall ball was an adjustment....a BIG adjustment (academically, mentally and physically). Thankfully, my daughter was prepared so she's fine but some of her more highly touted club teammates who went to Hopkins have quit already. One semester and they have quit the team and dropped out of school....and Hopkins is pass/fail for all first semester freshmen. IMO, when you get to the next level, they don't care who you are or where you came from or what your resume looks like. The only things that matter are attitude and performance. Gotta have some grit. That goes for on the field as well as the classroom
I usually get a calls after practices so, I really appreciate that she wants to share the experience with me. She talks to my wife about the academic stuff and me on the lax stuff.
I have to be honest, the recruiting thing was not a pleasant experience because she was strung along by so many schools (6) only to just miss out. Fortunately, it all worked out in the end and she's as happy as a clam. She's happy with her school and happy with her team. That is all that matters.
Stay tuned...
Sadly, a local team is trying to get my kid to switch schools to play with them and she is warming up to the idea. Her school is great, but her friends are all playing with the private school. We will see...
My soccer season is over. I broke my ankle twice and my wife said I had to stop. I did finish both games though. I am an idiot.

The step up to the collegiate level really freaks some kids out especially those who have never encountered any adversity in their academics and/or athletics. That's where it helps if you have a healthy dose of grit before you get there. Hey, most of the freshmen in my daughter's class had a bit of a freshman freakout....it happens. Recognize it, then roll with it but don't lose your head over it.
The statistics say that roughly 45% will not complete the 4 years worth of their eligibility. You have to love it.
No actually, I can't find anything on goalies. The attrition thing has been going back and forth for quite awhile. I googled "collegiate sports attrition %" and I found this interesting blog posting.
https://new.berecruited.com/athlete...llege-athletes-quit-cut-or-get-asked-to-leave
Keep in mind it's a blog and not a verifiable source but it does mention some interesting stuff. I have found a Brown University survey of its student athletes and a Brown student news paper article that discusses the survey. The attrition number they mention is 33%. I have seen threads on Laxpower that mention attrition rates for all college sports from 33-35%. Not the 45% that I mentioned earlier but still a significant number none the less.
The original point still holds, it's very challenging to be a student athlete.

My little ice hockey player is 4. He plays in a league of 4-7 year-olds. He scored his first goal last night. I was home with strep throat. I had not missed a game or practice (I help out the coaches a little) until last night. My wife takes video of all of his shifts, as we like to memorialize the kids' first goals for the families whenever they happen (hockey is a big deal around here). Unfortunately, it seems that she didn't hit the button and we didn't get it. So I missed getting to watch him have the whole experience. He is so proud. At his request, we've been doing a little extra practice out on our pond. He got to tell me all about it when he got home. I am both thrilled and disappointed, though I'm determined to only let him see half of that. I also enjoy being a dad.
Im glad you said that. I did the same thing last fall when mine scored her first NCAA goal...al beit a scrimmage but never the less.
An aside, when she scored, her coach pulled her off the field before the next draw and gave her a hug. Women's sports are cool!
My daughter will be playing at the training center (next to Longstreth) tomorrow morning. Her team will be tested. The best club teams in PA will be there competing (Excalibur, WC Eagles, Central Penn etc..) She is on team Majestyx Purple U14. Should be a good gauge to see how good her team is.
Enjoy now, give it a few years and the boys with the high testosterone levels will be swarming and interfering with your JOYI am enjoying being a Dad.

This week is NITs in Lancaster! Mini vacation for our family.
Faye and her team are prepped up and ready to beat the WC Eagles(doubt it will happen). 3 days of junk food and field hockey action.
Everybody plays in "fall ball". She may see some playing time this Spring but I have limited expectations. It's all gravy from here on. The main thing is that she's having a positive experience and getting a degree from an incredible college.
best of luck to her. there was a huge FH tourney at USTC this past Saturday. The FH cars were driving the soccer families crazy, as they were taking all the spots near the turf soccer fields. I checked the brackets, but it did not see your daughter's team listed in the brackets for 14A, 14B, or 14C.
@Nittany Ned2 -- seems as though your daughter's team has gotten off to a tough start to start the season. Not sure why they scheduled UMD for their 1st game, and George Mason as their 2nd game. Seems they had a really tough loss on Sunday, getting tied and then beaten in the last 2+ minutes of the game.
Things don't get much easier for them, as UVA and Stanford are their next two opponents. They'll be really tested by the time they get to league play. (Which is rather odd, in that their first league game isn't until nearly 2 months into their season, and then all their league contests are played over a 3-week period.)
With the exception of the Calif. road trip, pretty much all of her games are not all that far from you. I guess the away games @ Winthrop and @ Hofstra are the longest trips.
I have always been a stickler for fundamentals (passing, catching, non dominant hand) ever since the "Easter Bunny" gave her her first stick at 5...Fundamentals, fundamentals fundamentals.
I left the last game at halftime. I couldn't take it anymore. To stay positive, I told my daughter "Keep your chin up your opportunity is coming. Your job is to prepare for it and make the most of it."
Hi Wade, congrats to the team. I was just thinking on the way to work yesterday that I haven't heard from you for a while. Is that you in the background with your daughter next to you?
Back 2 back Champs in NEPA! We are not as good as the MD teams, but we are trying.

Keep in touch. Be safe traveling to the tournaments this summer.
Tom
Thanks Wade, God speed to you and yoursHey Tom! My kid is the tall one on the far right. Your Dr's kid is in front of me(she is the best player in our area). I have a lot of traveling to do this summer Rhode Island, OBX, Va. I wish I was going to the Netherlands, but they are having a FH camp at SEM.
I hope all is well with your crew. Your grand-daughter has been an inspiration to my kid. Go Black Knights!
