Well, the good news is that he can still get his graduate degree from the University of Iowa. That's why he was going to Iowa, right? They have a graduate program he wants to pursue that Iowa State doesn't offer.
PDIII should have asked Surianos old man to step in....

I can guess of a lot worse things to be doing than training freestyle w HWC while earning a graduate degree at Univ of Iowa.

That's too bad. he may be a knucklehead but he's a fun wrestler to watch. Would've been interesting to see him against Bo and Myles Martin at B1Gs and NCAAs.
Absolutely, talent-wise. Team-chemistry-wise, seemed like a huge risk.
Intangibles can help win championships...or help a team over-perform, in general.

I brought this up on the HR, in a different context (in the event of injury without qualifying standard), that the "powers that be" would keep him from the NCs.

On the bright side, Andrew Long is once again fair game.
I figured there was a far better than even money chance Downey wouldn't ever walk out on the mat for Iowa even if he made it through all the hoops because of the team chemistry issue; that he'd cross a line that Tom and Terry couldn't ignore. Seems anti-climatic that the NCAA hoop no one was talking about is the one he couldn't get through.
For someone relatively new here, would someone mind giving me a quick history/synopsis of the PDIII story and why it's so closely followed here? I had never heard of him until I saw threads on here, yet have never seen the whole story.

Very briefly, he was booted from Iowa State last year midseason, with a year of eligibility left. This year it was announced that he might wrestle for Iowa in the second semester, providing he could (1) graduate from Iowa State (which he eventually did); (2) matriculate into Iowa grad school (which I think he was able to do); (3) obtain an NCAA transfer waiver; and (4) refrain from self-destruction. Evidently he couldn't get past no. 3.
The short version is that Downey is a diva. Immensely talented wrestler who can't keep himself out of trouble or his mouth shut on Twitter. And his father is hell bound on proving it's genetic.
The slightly longer version is that he was kicked out of HS in Baltimore for fighting, kicked off the team at Nebraska (drinking and fighting) and Iowa State (being recalcitrant), and Instagrammed revenge porn of a female student at ISU (after which PD2 bragged about junior's junk).
He's good enough to beat Gabe Dean, but then when he loses it's because the other guy had a bye. Can't wrestle in a dual because he's injured, even though he was medically cleared weeks before. Etc.
Knucklehead or not, I’ve had a few exchanges with PDIII on Twitter. He may have this non-PSU like attitude to him, but he was respectful with my interaction with him. Hopefully he will finish his degrees and be successful as he enters into the real world.
Sad we won’t get to see him. Happy he isn’t at IU.

I believe that the intra conference transfer is a BigTen issue, not an NCAA issue.
Maybe failing piss tests and assaulting people are not really good things to be known for when you are asking for an exception. My sympathy meter isn't moving on this one. There is no way he will stay in Graduate School and I'm sure the Iowa City police won't want him loose in that town for long. He will go try to fight now, and by try I mean run a bunch of smack at a top fighter then fail a drug test or get injured so he doesn't really have to fight.

You forgot the most important part. After the fight never happens he will declare himself the winner on Twitter.

I, for one, am going to call this just desserts, given the way that he and his thug Dad carry themselves. Furthermore, as much as I wish bad luck on the Sqwawkers, they never wanted anything to do with this cancer anyway. He would have bought nothing but more disrespect to their program.
