Football Penn State Defensive Coordinator Tom Allen set to leave for Clemson

Obviously Tom Allen was interviewing while preparing for the ND game. It is not a stretch to say he was likely distracted in his preparation for the game. Good riddance. I have this feeling that both our QB getting calls from the NFL reportedly and Tom Allen interviewing for a new position contributed to the loss to an inferior Notre Dame team.

Tom Allen did not recruit or develop the championship level defensive talent we had this year. Good for him for being in the right place and the right time to lift his coaching stock. But I think a lot of coaches could have done what he did with the talent we have. My preference would be for CJF to promote Dex instead of someone who is just out for themselves and not all in on Penn State.

I very much doubt this.
First there is only so much preparation you can do.
Second, Allen is a known commodity.

It could just be money. Clemson may be able to spend more for coordinators than PSU does. Or maybe Allen wants to coach in the SEC -- one more stop before he lands another HC position.

PSU D performed well this year so I doubt it was lack of appreciation for his work.

On Friday he ponders what he wants to do next in his career. Saturday he determines he wants to be a DC down south. On Sunday he looks at the opportunities. He interviews on Sunday night and gets the job Monday morning. BS. Tom Allen is a scumbag of the worst kind, and he should be judged in PSU history as responsible for the defensive collapse versus Notre Dame because he was distracted, looking for other opportunities when he should have been preparing.

He was fine. Not great but good. I’d grade him a solid B/B+

Would have been fine if he stayed yet not upset really at all that he’s leaving
Manny felt like more of a loss because in addition to having good defenses he seemed to relate to the players really well and was a great recruiter. I didn't hear much about Allen this year outside of game day.

Poindexter is in it for himself too. Just FYI

I'm not upset he's leaving but this isn't a great look for Franklin or Penn State. Any time a coach leaves in a lateral move, especially as experienced as Allen, it will raise questions.

That's why I used the word "and". We're all out for ourselves to some extent. But I want someone who believes Penn State is the place to get them where they want to be.
Fair enough. I just don't think "all in" exists in this era at the assistant level. Doesn't make me right.

Wut? Why would Allen go to an ACC school if he wants to coach in the SEC?

This hire was probably settled a month ago.

And between then and now he has been focused on PSU.

Do you think Franklin had any idea? And if so..both agreed to keep quiet till after the playoff run..AND..one would think that Franklin has a few people in mind already ? Does he go outside ? or anyone worth being promoted within ? is it crazy to think a Lavar Arrington ? Terri Smith ? Dan Connor ? Sean Spencer ?

This was a mutual parting. Franklin and he didn't see eye to eye on something.

I wonder what's being said to defensive players about scheme and their role next year and who's saying it. Who welcomed back Mack?

We can do better than Allen. Get someone who can start the game with a plan to stop slants and short passes. Why in the ND game did we start blitzing LB's in the second half when our 4 man rush was getting there very fast? We left more space and players uncovered for short passes. We didn't blitz like this throughout the season.

It was a beyond painful loss that PSU should have won. ND opened around a 2-point favorite and PSU closed around a 1-point favorite. Calling ND "inferior" is a bit of a stretch.
The schedules were much different so it's difficult to compare PSU to ND. Recruiting rankings have been similar but I think PSU had the talent edge largely due to the players from the #6 class of 2022.

Putting talent aside... PSU had a 7 pt lead with just 8 minutes remaining but surrendered the lead because Cam Miller fell down and we only had a single safety back (our aggressive man defense). On our next possession Singleton got a penalty putting us behind the sticks and resulted in a punt. We surrendered field position because of Durant's hands to the face penalty but we still got the ball back with a chance to win. Unfortunately Allar threw that ill advised pass and ND took over at the 42 yd line where they only needed 1st down to get into FG position. That's 4 crucial mistakes near the end of the game that turned victory into defeat. I'm not sure why those things seem to happen so often to PSU in big games.

Please stay away from sharp objects. And don’t go near the pets of any acquaintances or neighbors you may have with a pot of boiling water.

I'm guessing it was mutual.
These ex HC types are typically a season or two max.
That's modern CFB.

The guy has 2 daughters living in the Carolinas and he has an opportunity to be near family in better weather, while probably making more money. You tell me, where is the downside for him? Good for him, it seems like he is creating some better work/life balance for he and his family.
