Football Penn State Defensive Coordinator Tom Allen set to leave for Clemson

It's part of success.
I agree. Fact is, PSU's coaches have done more with less if you believe the recruiting sites. GA, AL, tOSU, ND, LSU, USC, TX,and Oregon all get better recruits year in and year out. You can probably add in and handful more. yet, there we are in or just outside the top ten every year. And despite our loss to ND, we actually outplayed them. Boise and SMU are quality teams that we just body-slammed. There was no doubt in those games. The coaches get a lot of credit for developing and scheming.

It certainly doesn't look good. I thought if Allen left it'd be for a HC gig but him making a lateral move to Clemson after just one year at PSU makes Franklin look bad IMO.
everyone leaves...its a money game..actually you can also look at the fact at where these Coaches are going ? Franklin..is leaving an impressive Coaching tree around the Country..or at least Penn State is...

It's inevitable if the team is good

Not every year.

When clemson had their run they had some stability and Venables was there for a decade.

Notice how are better position groups have some stability? CB(Smith), RB(Seider), OL, TE, S.

Not every coach is looking to leave every year. I would not mind old coordinators who are no longer interested in being HCs. We could then have some young position coaches who are recruiters.

As long as he's never a HC here I'm fine with that. Just an awful HC.
The biggest issue with hiring him as the DC is the first time CJF drops a game 30% or people will want Golden to replace him

Only if they are idiots. Golden is soft. He could not fire one guy to safe his entire staff at Miami. He then let everyone lose their jobs.

True but we can't be replacing coordinators at a near yearly clip. This time JF needs to find a younger guy that can stay put for at least a few years before getting a HC slot somewhere. I would have assumed he talked about how long Allen was looking to stay before hiring him but oh well...one and done...I actually wasn't much of a fan of Allen's anyway so I'll take it.

Do you think younger is more likely to stay put? I do not.

I would prefer a veteran who is ready to settle down and then young energetic position coaches to recruit.

If we're somehow able to find an older more veteran coach who has already been a HC and is just looking to be a DC somewhere (and not have to deal with all the extra crap a HC has to do) for a few years before retiring I'd be thrilled to have them but they are like unicorns. Almost all of them have that little voice inside still seeking one more shot at a HC gig.

I thought that Allen MIGHT be that guy but apparently he and CFJ didn't mesh very well.

Do you mean like a Chip Kelly?

In the beginning of camp last year, there were several weeks of Franklin referencing situations where “Coach Allen is very verbal and animated in his on field coaching….it’s hard to break the habit of being a head coach” . —Then he was moved from the field to the box after the second week of the season. Logical reason to do so, but it may have served a dual purpose.

Interesting observation. Perhaps Allen never truly adjusted to not being a head coach. Once you are The Man it’s difficult to take a step back.
