Football Penn State earns victory No. 5, defeating Big Ten newcomer UCLA on Saturday

Explain why you think a 2 loss Penn State is out...
The math doesn't math on that one
Certainly it depends on how many other two loss teams there are, but our schedule is very weak. If we lose to both USC and Ohio State, where is our signature win?

We don’t play Michigan, Indiana or Rutgers.

We don't necessarily need a signature win. The ACC and Big XII are going to have trouble getting in more than 1 team. ND lost to NIU so even a 11-1 with a win over USC I'm not confident theyd get in over us. If they lose to USC they definitely won't. Mizzou losing today was huge for our 10-2 case.

JF said last week after the Illinois game that he wanted to see a significant step taken by the team. I doubt he got that today. He also said Quentin Martin is ready for the bigger roll if Nick couldn't go and yet he gets one carry. Odd.

I thought Martin had more than one carry. He did have a reception.

I don't think the question is "are we that good?" The question is "are we good enough to beat Ohio State?"

Both teams are what they are and next Saturday won't change that.
The answer to "are we good enough to beat OSU?" is clearly no. Maybe we get better but with a month until that game they clearly out class us.

Very odd situation with Nick as James said after the game they expected him back thursday, then Friday and he didn't learn until game time that Nick wasn't playing. I'm extremely skeptical he plays next week and who knows based on how everything is a covert operation like Jason Bourne around the program would it shock anybody if he doesn't play again?

They're not exactly dominating Iowa right now
We're way more critical of our own team than others because we see every plan and overanalyze it.
I do think Ohio State should beat us and we do have to improve but they need to improve as well.

Martin is kinda wiry. Should he gain weight/muscle? How heavy is he?

USC. USC. USC!

Seriously though, this Buckeyes team looks really solid. I'm impressed with them, but I wonder how their fans feel about the current 7-0 lead over Iowa?

Key fumble and Iowa not fulfilling their usual destinies (missed a 52 yard FG by inches, punter shanks one for 20 yards near midfield, this after they ran a fake punt for a 1st down...that Ferentz snuffed out with an ill-timed time out).

I don't see how anyone watching this game could see us as clearly outmatched beyond:

1. The roster they have
2. Franklin's record vs OSU

OSU still looks better than us, don't get me wrong. Judkins was probably the most important player they added.

Maybe he’s redshirting to save a year, LOL!

He's definitely a small scatback right now. I can see why many had wondered if we would try him at WR before his arrival.

Definitely needs to gain some strength. He barely looks 180 to me.

I think their QB holds them back a bit. WRs are NFL guys now (one is a freshman in his 5th college game, ridiculous). We have to play our A game to have any shot and at that get a break or two. Just not seeing Allar being the guy who could carry us to a huge win like that.

First things first, we are in for a death match next week in LA. Not confident given Big Game James's track record and no Winston to help our back 7. Singleton playing and playing well a must.

Georgia Bama and Indiana aren't exactly off to great starts either today. It's not as easy as everyone thinks to dominate teams. We won convincingly today

We disagree on Allar. I just don't know if he has the supporting cast. I have zero concern with Allar.

Singleton adds a dimension but I think we can win without him if necessary. Don't want to have to find out but as great as it is having him I think we'd survive. Way more concerned about injuries to the OL.

Did somebody else get hurt on the offensive line besides Donkoh?

They did eliminate a lot of penalties, I don’t think we had any pre snap penalties so there’s that. We also kicked two field goals. So there was improvement.

We just don’t look like a dominating national champ contender, or a team that can play with Ohio State.

An 11-1 ND with wins over A&M and USC will definitely get in ahead of a 10-2 PSU.

One of the questions is if any surprise teams finish undefeated.

I'm not sold on that. Louisville losing today hurt them and A&M will lose more games
Those surprise teams though (let's say Duke or Pitt) have to win a conf title game. At 12-1 I think they're out.

Indiana and Rutgers wouldn't be considered signature wins.
Right now they are both ranked. Who else that we play is or will be ranked? Will Illinois still be ranked at the end of the year? IMO we really need to win next week . I think we can, I don’t think USC is better than us, but it’s not a gimme by any means.

Rutgers is ranked? If they are--they better figure things out soon because they're struggling with Nebraska
I agree with you about USC though. I think (opinion) we can win but it won't be easy. I'd rather not find out what happens if we lose. I still think (opinion) we get in at 10-2

I only saw Dinka’s get hurt, but his potential loss is a big one. Do not know his injury but his arm was hanging funny leaving the field after the sack.

I thought Shelton left the game briefly at the end as well on Donkoh--maybe I misheard--could be wrong

Are James Madison, Army/Navy, Liberty, etc out even if they finish undefeated?

Does an 11-1 runner up in the ACC go ahead of a 10-2 PSU?

A lot can happen.

Oh, they have no shot--JMU, Army, Navy, Liberty, etc. There's no way at 12-0 they're rated higher than us at 10-2
Miami could get an at large if they go 12-0 and lose the ACC title game but title games really hurt everyone
A lot can happen--smart money is that we get in at 10-2 though

A lot of schedule left. And are either of them better than Illinois? Or have they just not played a strong team yet?

I'm not sure how strong USC is. We need to beat them regardless.

Didn't OSU win in a rout? They will definitely beat us. If Fox didn't screw up the White Out opportunity we maybe had a puncher's shot if it was a White Out.

Don't sleep on Indiana. They could be 11-1. If that happens they get in ahead of us at 10-2.

If 35-7 is a rout, then what is 27-11? Both games were very similar from what I watched (drove home during 2nd half of Buckeyes games).

I still feel like OSU is an easy favorite, but your tone indicates you didn't watch the game.
