Football Penn State earns victory No. 5, defeating Big Ten newcomer UCLA on Saturday

How many throws have been longer than 5 yards? Longer than 10?

This is just taking the short stuff and hoping your QB is accurate and somebody breaks some tackles. Dink and dunk.

If we can force USC to play that game, I'd say we would be happy.

#43 is in there with Robinson and Nelson. Somebody to call the defense. That's all.
Yeah, well he has once again played terribly.
UCLA just scored their first touchdown in 9 quarters.
They moved at will against the defense with lots of 2nd teamers.
PSU coaching staff has no killer instinct.
Concerned.

Meh… a win is a win but not overly impressive. I truly believe that Singleton would’ve busted one or two of Allen’s runs for a touchdown. I think Singleton means at least seven points for the offense.

K. Allen now at 21 carries for 78 yards. When was the last time PSU had a 20 rush game from a RB? I hope he gets a breakaway to get that average up. He's been running hard all day and really deserves a big run!
To be fair he kinda had to get more carries with singletons injury. Not a good ratio but got the job done

I do think the style of offense we've seen the past two weeks is in preparation for USC/Ohio State
Franklin wants long, sustained drives to limit the time they have the ball
Will it work? We'll find out

lol now the team stinks because they gave up meaningless td with 16 seconds left. The comedians on this board are priceless
It's entertaining--we played a solid game. Started a little slow then a late TD that makes it look closer than it was
But that game was never competitive.

Our defense is on par with Michigan IMO (minus an elite CB)
And our offense is better
USC can beat us but we should be expected to win
Minus also two elite DTs which Michigan has. Not sure we are as stout up front as they are. But, both Ds are very good.

Going forward I would be very concerned about our pass defense, especially when in zone coverage. In each of the last two games it seemed like the opponent offense could move the ball at will on the first drive, but then for whatever reason get away from it.

Our linebackers and defensive secondary often look lost out there. This shows in particular on third and long, where we drop back into zone and don't bother to match up. It almost looks like it is easier for our opponents when the third down distance is longer. We play looser. We play deeper. They make an easy catch and then run for the first down.

Unless Franklin and Allen have an epiphany USC is going to pick this defense apart. USC and OSU are smart enough not to discard that which works.

wait, you think that the opponents got away from what was working rather than thinking that we made changes?

like they were doing things and they worked and we weren't stopping them so they decided to change what they were doing and we decided to go with what already hadn't been working and just got lucky that they changed?

Hey, we did hold them to their lowest scoring total of the year. I'll get on the positivity bandwagon.

Both PSU and USC are overrated IMO. We will be able to move the ball and score points against USC, the question is can we outscore them?

This is a must win IMO. A two loss PSU probably will not make the playoffs. Allar looked really good at times today, but he did not have a complete game. Singleton is an important piece of this offense.

Explain why you think a 2 loss Penn State is out...
The math doesn't math on that one

Just look at the plays that were called. They probably could have called center screens all day long.

On 3rd and long if we can't get pressure it's trouble. Seems to me that we drop back really deep and expect the rush to get to the QB. I remember last week seeing a safety so deep you would have thought he was expecting a Hail Mary to the end zone. No one near him.

I am just saying that we are going to have big trouble facing a diverse passing attack. Our back seven do not match up well unless they are in man coverage. Probably a leadership vacuum.

Yea, UM has two DT's headed to the NFL. But PSU DT's are good, very experienced, and deep which allows them to hold up over a whole game. And our DE's are pretty good although the didn't put the pressure on the UCLA QB that I expected as it seems only when Reed and other blitzed did they get to the UCLA QB.

But really, who cares about UM. PSU just needs to take care of their own business and get to the playoff. Win all the games that look like wins and play well in a loss or two. 1 or 2 losses that are less than 7 pt losses and PSU should still be in. If PSU only loses 1 game they should host a game.

I feel like we are playing a very conservative offense. Both UCLA and Illinois played ball control offenses as well. As a result, there’s been a very few drives and very limited opportunities. Since we are running the ball effectively, we are also running the clock down when I look at our past game, it is very efficient And is begging to be utilized more. Perhaps next week I am a little concerned about the defense and I don’t understand why our first driver to are really predictable and limited like everybody else is saying, we’ll see next week.

Singleton definately makes the offense better. Drew started a little slow as he missed some open guys. I was hoping to see Martin run more from the backfield as he may be more explosive and elusive than Katron. Hope Franklin green lights Martin if only to put him in the slot some and get a few carries a game.

just what does solid mean? I really don't get that word.
That's fair--to me it means we met expectations. We didn't dominate the game but we outplayed them in all 3 aspects and the game was never in question. I don't care about beating UCLA 42-0. I just want to be relatively on par with how they played against Oregon and LSU--I thought we were. Especially given the disappointing slow start with the concern of looking ahead to USC.
