I bleed Penn State and live in Memphis. So excited to see Lions in person. Equally disappointed with PSU fans. Everytime I looked at PSU fans and they were sitting down.

This was the superbowl for Memphis.....yeah for Memphis. For PSU this was the worst ball that they could have been in...and it is what we got.

Hard to get excited about going to Dallas, and playing a team that we are "supposed" to beat, and if we lose, we are "over rated".. I read a couple of the Memphis newspapers this morning and they talked about the great story for Memphis, and what a building block that this will be.......

When PSU went to the Pinstripe Bowl it was a sign that we were back, it was in NY and was an easy trip to make so we sold it out and represented.....this was a much different situation. If we would have had the Rose Bowl.....more fans.

the TV ratings I am guessing were pretty good, probably surpassing ND vs. Iowa St.

Just glad the team won the game. If they hadn't, we'd be hearing for the next twenty years about how Penn State lost consecutive bowl games to two basketball schools with no football tradition. Kentucky was bad enough. Memphis? Ouch. Glad to have you on board "Bobbyjennifer." Great first post. ;)

I’ve been to several bowl games and my observation is the PSU bowl game crowd seems to be a bit older and “been there, done that” type of crowd. They just want to watch the game

I’ve been pretty disappointed in how the whole fan base has acted all December. The treatment of the team, the opportunity, the opposing team, the bowl, the win, and of other PSU fans. We can do better.

So many penn state people missed out on simply having fun cheering on PSU in the Cotton Bowl. I get there’s a lot of animosity toward the Big Ten, what the NCAA did to us, the BOT, and how they’ve shaped the perception of us...but sneering at all the good we just experienced is not getting revenge on them. It’s just souring the experience for those who want to enjoy watching this team.

Please take this moment to remember that PSU has a message board mob problem.

Why go when you can watch it on tv? Seriously , not everyone has either the time of money to plan a spontaneous trip ( less than one one month) over the holidays.

I don't get the negativity towards Dallas, the Cotton Bowl, or playing Memphis. The team obviously had a great time at Jerry's World, which is all that really matters anyway. It was a great game and there weren't any injuries. Memphis would probably beat most of the B1G this year, minus PSU and OSU (maybe Wisky and Minny).

As a personal bonus, I was able to stream the entire game through ESPN and kickoff was at 9pm here, which was perfect.

Actually watch the game? What a novel idea.

You apparently misunderstood what was happening
There was no lack of enthusiasm by our fans. They were engaging in what we old timers call a "sitdown strike." They were protesting the BigTen's unfairness toward Penn State; the failure of our BOT to honor Joe Paterno; the cost of season football tickets; and the end of the Pitt football series (OK, maybe not that one). ;) In any event, this was a form of protest that should be applauded, not criticized.

Speaking from experience, getting old is a bitch as I hope you will find out. Senior citizens NEED a place to set their ass when nothing exciting is going on and to save their energy when something does happen. Not everyone is 25 and spry.

I may be in a very small minority on this but I have always found the concept of standing during a game to be odd. When we watch a game at home do we stand up throughout the game? What about when someone breaks loose on a long run? I don't, maybe that;'s just me....

I remember the student section, where not only do they stand, but stand on the bench in front of them for a few extra inches of height.

Memphis is not a Power 5 team. It doesn’t matter if they are really good or not, they are a division down, effectively. It was a lose lose game for us.

I would guess the average age of most fans who go to bowl games fairly regularly is much closer to retirement age than their college years. Standing, for me, is much harder on my back and knees than sitting. Most of us still stand and "MAKE. SOME. NOOOIIIIISE!!!!!" when something exciting is happening, but given the typical football game, there will be much more sitting going on.

Well, it is like this. I have 4 season tickets that I pay a good amount for. I want to sit and relax, not stand the entire game. Granted, I will stand when needed, but that's it. I went to a basketball tournament, sat in a section where I thought it was safe behind my team's bench and i had a guy and his wife yell at the refs the entire game. I turned around and looked at the guy he told me stop looking at him or I will be sorry. Supposedly, this couple had a kid who played on the opposing team. It seems both of them fell out of the gene pool. I really wanted to say something but I sat next to a couple of very nice women.

Standing for more than a minute is impossible for me, my legs go numb from spinal injuries in 1973, actually it was today, 46 years ago, about 30 mins. after this post on that fateful day.

So, no, not everyone will stand the entire game to suit recent students sensibilities. You will discover, if you reach retirement age, standing for long periods doesn't work anymore. Frankly should a fan try to stand in front of me the entier game, my attendance would be ruined as all I'd be able to see it their posterior, a miserable thought.

I like the poster who asked if you stand in front of your TV at home when watching games? No one where I was did that, we all sat through the entire game. Maturity in age, physical limitations and appreciation of the pain and suffering of others will grow. You will eventually see it our way.

Yes they were very good. Credit @Midnighter for this...
>>So, numbers for the TV audience for the Cotton Bowl are in. It had 6.22 million viewers, which is up 14% from the only other time the Cotton Bowl featured a Group of Five team in the NY6 era (which is from 2017, when Wisconsin played Western Michigan to the tune of 5.4 million viewers, and had an attendance of 59,615). That game was played on January 2nd.<<

I stand up and yell and pace around. I should probably take it easy...

Nope, that's me too.

LOL, yea they are probably they only ones that can afford it.;)
The exception was the 2006 Orange Bowl when I think half the student body and recent grads decided to drive or fly to Miami. The 20-something’s did not outnumber the older alums but it was close

Maybe I should put this in the unpopular idea thread, but I usually DO stand to watch the games at home quite often. I'm in my 50's too. Standing, maybe some short pacing. I know i suffer from adult ADHD :D

Full disclosure, for the Cotton Bowl game, I actually did end up sitting for about half the game. I'M not sure why.

Stand if you like, as long as it isn't in front of others, obstructing their view. This brings us back to a standing section in the stadium question. Random standing doesn't work and creates animosity in those who's view you obstruct. Animosity leads to things better taken outside the stadium.

Sadly, I witnessed a "stander" in the middle of WCU, the middle of a group of long term season ticket holders. The man was politely asked to sit between plays, he ignored the request, several fans in that area were unable to stand for the entire game. About 10 mins. into the 1st quarter a man behind me loudly told the stander man that he would sit him down if he didn't do it himself, and he was very capable of sitting him down. The girl friend pleaded with him and he finally did sit down, then left the seats permanently, escorted by stadium security. No one wanted the confrontation provoked by the standing man refusing the requests to at least sit between plays. It was upsetting to many sitting in that section. We should be aware of where we are and our impact on others. Some don't care. I do. What should have been a great game day experience was diminished by this incident. Hopefully others will grasp this and act accordingly depending on the section they inhabit. I was truly concerned that a physical altercation was impending until the girl friend's pleading worked. Glad it did.
