I was hoping he came back but was expecting him to leave just not in the same league Singleton or Allen

You are so correct. Lee is not even in the same stratosphere as Singleton and Allen.

Understandable. Wish him well. He was key in the win at Purdue. I now think we need to find a third back of reasonable quality unless they think Tank Smith is that guy.

I really thought he was coming back. There has to be back story here. Either London is making good progress in his recovery and expected to contribute, or we have a surprise recruit or big portal transfer.
While I would love for that to be true, I think the more likely scenario here is that Lee just wanted to go somewhere where he’d play meaningful snaps.
Why would there be a back story??? PSU got 2 good kids coming in, and they have 2 absolute studs already in front of Lee. I thought he was very solid, but he is not an Allen or Singleton. He is doing what is best for him, and while I am sure the staff would have loved him coming back, there is no other back story other than Allen and Singleton. And honestly, since he didn't even get into the Utah game, I think the staff probably was well aware he was not coming back.
And Tank played a lot last few games. Either coaches knew Lee was leaving and wanted to see Tank in action or Tank was better which pushed Lee to go.
With all due respect, no sane coach would think Tank Smith is that guy
From what I saw of Lee at PSU he seemed to have more spark in his step in his first season, but the OLine was not opening many holes back in 2020 compared to this past season. Lee's doesn't seem in Allen's class, and surely not in Singleton's class, but he's a talent RB that when healthy could get lots of carries and be successful in the right P5 situation, unlike some ot the past 4 star LB's that have transferred out of PSU in the past 5 years.
My guess is that Franklin allowed it to be on Lee's terms. Meaning once he got cleared, which seemed to happen several times, he still did not get a carry and it was probably to preserve his health for the portal. Franklin keeps things very close to the vest, and one thing he does a great job with is protecting the players and being respectful to them publicly. This really should not be a surprise to anyone, and I wish Lee the best.
Honestly, Lee was not as good as either of them, and in some ways Allen is better than Singleton, and in other ways Singleton is better than Allen. Nice problem to have.
I wish him well also. As physically imposing as Lee is he never really ran with a thunder type style, hitting the hole hard, running with decisiveness and always falling forward. He was always tentative and trying to find a new hole. I hope he is successful wherever he ends up.
From what I saw of Tank he looked just like the walk on RB that he is, that worked hard in practice and was rewarded in a couple of games where PSU had the games well in hand. To rest Allen and Singleton because Lee wasn't available due to injury or for other reason(s), and there wasn't another scholarship RB to give carries to because Ford had left the team earlier in the season.

In defense of Lee, at least IMHO, he never got to run behind a good OL either. I think the play-calling improved as this year went on, and I think the OL improved as well. Unfortunately, he was not healthy enough at times, and he was beaten out at other times.
Personally, I think Lee was available longer than we think. I think some of those discussions happened during the season. The fact he was not at almost every practice that folks were allowed in to, regardless of his "injury", my guess is everyone knew what the plan was. I am glad he got the trip to the Rose Bowl with his teammates, but the fact that he was "definitely" cleared, and he didn't get a single snap, was telling.
I couldn't help but notice that Lee's Twitter page says "professional athlete".
Won’t get a portal running back as no one’s going to want to come and ride the bench behind Singleton and Allen. Might have to pull a Shelley hammonds, and get a defensive back or a wide receiver to play running back if needed.
My guess is Lee was saving a year of eligibility. No disrespect to Tank, but Lee is a very good back.

His dominance as a H.S. RB would seem to make him an ideal "emergency" RB at PSU. But I'm betting that the staff will have 4 healthy scholarship RB's before the WVU game next Fall. Either the two sophs and the two two freshmen if Montgomery is fully recovered, or by bringing in a late transfer RB.
Rojas seems to be such an upside LB prospect that Diaz would not want to lend him to the offense. But who knows, the staff may be taking your line of thinking.
Yes, he has a big upside as an LB but he's pretty light to play LB as a freshman, it wouldn't be too difficult for him to gain 10 lbs by next fall, he'd be ideal as an emergency back only if we can't find suitable, healthy, and physical backups.
It won't be too difficult to gain more than 10 lbs by next Fall. He's enrolled now and the Winter S&C begins shortly.
But Franklin does his best to avoid emergencies which is why I believe he'll do everything he can to go into the 2023 season with 4 RB's that are healthy enough to play. ACL recoveries now seem to be 9 months so although we won't know one way or the other until Franklin's WVU pregame PC there seems to be a pretty good chance that Montgomery may end up the 3rd or 4th RB to begin the season. Montgomery won't be on campus until next Summer.
True. He did try to bounce it outside too often, but he was never quick enough to do so. He is probably a 4.6 40, while our thunder, Allen, is probably around a 4.5, and our lightning Singleton is a 4.4.
