Football Penn State set to hire Ohio State DC Jim Knowles as Defensive Coordinator

Aw, give it a rest.
I’ll come back over once things start heating up again and we get into spring ball at least. Right now there isn’t much going on a part from the new hire.
I'm good with being wrong
Obviously if you read those it's about not getting Knowles and Lynn. Glad things worked out.
hey man it’s all in good fun, I get your frustration though because you care just like I do and it can just get so frustrating given the recent history a part from the last couple years with this new admin so we are trained mentally to expect the worst from our leadership. But for once it really seems like we have the administration and staff in place to go all in and stop catering to any fears of negative press or feeling like they have to apologize for putting an emphasis on football

Great hire but the PSU defense has always been rock solid. Knowles seems to jump around a bit but if PSU can keep him around for a few years that would be great for the program and possibly result in an NC Still, priority # 1 ----- get a superstar WR (or 2) for 2025. Didn't realize that Knowles is from Philly
who cares if we can keep him around? No one can hold on to coordinators. OSU couldn't. He'll be gone in a year to two. That's the way it goes. We'll be fine.

This...if he leaves after a year maybe we won a title. Neither him nor AK will be here long if we're successful

With all this talk of Knowles’ defense taking a while to learn and with 2025 being a shot at a title, I wonder if he could hold off on making big changes for a year?

From the sounds of it, Franklin is giving him complete control of the defense, which is something Day didn't. So I imagine you'll get the full Knowles experience.

Knowles came in super aggressive in 2022, blitzing all the time. That led to some massive defensive breakdowns against Michigan and Georgia among others, which prompted Day to force Knowles to dial it back. Then the defense got a bit too relaxed, which led to the 2024 Oregon debacle. Day intervened again, which is what reportedly caused the rupture. The defense that we saw during the playoff was a hybrid of Knowles system with the changes demanded by Ryan Day. It worked beautifully, but understandably Knowles was upset and was actually in contact with Oklahoma shortly after the Tennessee game in late December.

We only saw the unfiltered Jim Knowles defense for a short period of time, so the experience you all get will probably be quite different (for better or worse -- who knows) than what we got.

I think the success of next year’s team will be dependent upon whether we can find a WR that can consistently get open and catch the ball. We know what we have at RB and I would wager to bet we can count on good play from the TE position all year long, but can we find a receiver or two we can rely on against the better teams? It’s addition by subtraction in my opinion with Wallace and Evans leaving. They did nothing for us all year when it really mattered. They put up their numbers against bad defenses and blown coverages. I really really like the kid from Troy to be that “guy” and I think the kid from USC will be at least an improvement from this past year’s crew. I’m hoping a kid like Denmark can step up or Gonzalez coming back from injury. And maybe even a freshman could step up, we have 4 talented guys coming in, it’s not out of the question that 1 of them could contribute. Hopefully we can add another in the portal after the spring period opens up. Liam is a good team player, blocker and hopefully his senior year he can step up and make some more plays. The kid works hard so I’d never count him out

Two things I love about this:
1. It really means Penn State is going all-in on the upcoming season and pushing all their chips into the middle.
2. It feels damn good to steal him away from tO$U.

Still wish we managed to keep Kobe, though.
This is a great comment. Franklin was able to go out and get the best DC that was reasonably available (at least on paper).

This is really a turning point for the program in regard to making a financial commitment equal (basically) to anyone in the country.

Lmao 🤣 You guys are the epitome of passive aggressive hate 😂
Ohio State wins the national championship with the national number one defense, maybe of all time, Jim Knowles is the greatest and we are offering him a raise for the highest paid assistant ever!

Well said. Denmark is the one I think has the most potential. Need one to step up.

Manny Diaz was given the freedom to run a very aggressive defense under Franklin, knowing that his schemes also sometimes give up big plays as a result. It worked out great for us. It would be no surprise to me if Franklin was willing to do the same under Knowles.

Ohio State now says Knowles can't recruit 🤣.

I suppose that was the tooth fairy that pulled in 10 of those 11, and then the Easter Bunny that pulled in Downs from Alabama 😂.

Wait! My bad! with the Other side of their necks, they are saying it was all about Ryan Day making the adjustments and LJ winning the arguments in the room, and the players after all were nothing special 😂

My God I love this. This should be declared a national holiday. Penn State hired the best in the nation and on the same day Lando has wet $hit rubbed all over his face with pages and pages of receipts! 😂

Haven’t seen this much enthusiasm for the hiring of a coordinator since Mike Yurcich was hired.
Dead flat wrong. Not one person in the world considered Yurcich to be anything in the same area code as Knowles. You are saying this solely because he came from Ohio State where he was NOT THE TRUE COORDINATOR AND EVERYONE KNEW THAT. He also was not even mentioned in anyone's top ten of coordinators. The whole football world knew that was Day's offense.

Honest question: did you actually read my post? Because literally nobody said it was "all Ryan Day".

Remember when Nick Saban called our defense "antiquated" after the Oregon loss? It was well known in Columbus that Ryan Day intervened and got very involved in the defense after that. It's exactly why he surrendered OC duties in the offseason -- to be more involved with the D and special teams.

His involvement in the defense absolutely widened the rift between him and Knowles. That's not a secret.

Knowles was fantastic at Ohio State. I hate to lose him. But it's also no secret that Knowles was not happy with the defensive changes starting in October, particularly in the way the DL was employed within his scheme.

You think he just randomly decided to start looking for other DC jobs?

I love the hire, but they're right -- he was not a good recruiter at OSU. Unless he brings their safeties coach with him (who was with him at Duke), recruiting duties will probably fall to others on the staff.

He turned you down on an offer that would have made him the highest paid assistant in the nation. 😂. Keep scratching and scraping though because this is entertaining 😂

Those are my official. Stop trying to claim there's real info on it

So I will leave this right here, and add this: Penn State just hired the only defensive coordinator that has held Andy Kotelnicki without a touchdown. It happened twice. Jim Knowles at Ohio State and wait for it...Jim Knowles at Oklahoma State 😂

Tell you what, from all reports those guys absolutely love Coach Knowles and stayed because of him...I wonder if a couple of them might want to hitch a ride East to the valley with him?
I'm hearing Mr Tate and someone else who is very very important. Just a bird on the wall right now but.... apparently from TOS, it's the same bird that called this little rodeo a few days ago 😉

We are not allowed to enjoy anything. FIRE EVERYBODY!!!
I am enjoying this like I enjoyed my first gig at a bar playing guitar in a rock and roll band and thinking I was Eddie Van Halen 😂. Come to think of it, this is kinda like the opening band for Van Halen, stealing Eddie to play lead guitar for them 😂

This just in from Ohio fan: Did you know that the 85 Bears defense only happened because Mike Ditka took over for Buddy Ryan?

😂
