Football GAME WEEK: Penn State vs. Purdue (Press Conferences, Stories, and more)

- With three games left, expect to see more younger guys begin to see the field.

(Freshmen could play in up to 4 regular season games and can play in however many playoff games Penn State plays in).

"Grunk has turned it on here recently," - Franklin on the development of the quarterbacks under Andy Kotelnicki and Danny O'Brien. Says they hope to get Jaxon Smolik back soon as well.

Franklin was asked about his running back depth this season. Didn't say anything regarding Nick Singleton beyond being a compliment to Kaytron Allen. That being said, offered praise both for Quinton Maartin and Corey Smith, noted Smith's first run was more impressive to the coaching staff than his 70+ yard run in teh fourth quarter.

Franklin credits the success of getitng more wide receivers targets to the Nittany Lions sucecss on third down which of course leads to more plays and opportunities for touches, explosive plays, etc. Also threw in a "chuck it down the field" refernece.

James did note that Singleton has been working through some lingering issues this season - will know his availability for this weekend better as the week progresses. Also notes that he believes there's some scheduling challenges in the Big Ten in general. Refers to how Washington played an 8:00 p.m. ET game, didn't get back to Washington till Sunday morning, and now have to prepare for a Friday night game at home.

At this point in the season, Penn state has already began changing practices in terms of equipment, time, reps, etc. "Nothing dramatic but gradual reduction" to help counteract the accumulative effect of the season that has on the bodies of the players.

Franklin was asked about Hakeem Beamon. Says he loves Hakeem, his mom, discussed briefly all that he was able to accomplish with the program but did not go any deeper into Beamon's departure. (From my understanding, there was nothing 'bad' that happened, heard potentially just a personal decision from Beamon).

With that, Franklin liked how the defensive tackle room played against Wahsington this past Saturday.

True freshman who could play over the last three weeks.

RB Corey Smith
WR Tyseer Denmark
OT Eagan Boyer
OG Donnie Harbour
DT Xavier Gilliam
DE Max Granville
DE Jaylen Harvey
LB Anthony Speca
CB Antoine Belgrave-Shorter
CB Kenny Woseley
CB Jon Mitchell
Is this a list of 'other' true freshmen who could see action over the next 3 weeks?

No Cousins, Reynolds or Martin, off of the top of my head so I am just seeking clarification.

Thanks.

Reynolds already has burned his redshirt and I believe that Cousins has too; I believe that Martin will burn his if he plays in one more game. To me, worrying about burning redshirts has almost no significance now because many of these players simply are going to transfer if they don't see playing time quickly, so you might as well get something out of them while they're still here, especially with the skill players.

I have no problem with anything that you stated re: true freshmen playing early.

I was just seeking clarification regarding the omission of several freshmen from the potential participation list. Hopefully they were not omitted because they won't be participants (injured, other) but rather because they have burned their redshirts.

I understand. Reynolds and Cousins definitely played in the Washington game.

Even if Allen and/or Singleton leave after this season, the rb room is going to be stacked so much that, unless they are happy to be playing on a winning team that has a chance to make the playoffs, a few of them probably are going to transfer eventually. That's why I believe that it's unncessary to worry about burning redshirts, because that situation will take care of itself naturally. Therefore, you might as well play these kids when appropriate and maybe some of them will surprise you. All that I know is that there are lot of frosh wide receivers who are making their mark this season for other programs.

Reynolds and Cousins definitely have burned theirs. It would be redundant to mention them at this point.

Martin is close (2 or 3 games), but he might be dinged up a little. Unsure of his status. Did he have a designation vs Washington? I didn't see it posted.

It’s noticeable that he has been a step slower in Oct and Nov vs Sept. I hope he can fully heal before the playoffs. I would not play him vs Purdue regardless of status.

Cousins, Reynolds, and Lane will all play regularly.

Martin has played in three games, so he'll play in one more game this regular season unless injuries elsewhere force their hand.

I thought Singleton looked quick vs Washington, particularly on his KO return that was called back.

Agree that he is not needed vs Purdue but want to see him available for Minny.

Not quite sure why Reynolds is seeing the field because he's been a steady liability every play he sets foot on it.

I at least would like to see a pass thrown his way; I don't believe that he's caught a pass since the Kent State game. If nothing else, his size should pose a match up problem for a lot of defensive backs. Obviously, he needs to add much more bulk in the off season.
