Phillies 2024

Another good win in Toronto. Three home runs.
Yeah, Schwarber gets the headlines for his incredible hot streak, but very encouraged to see Cristopher Sanchez survive a shaky 1st inning to go 7 innings with no additional scoring, gave up 6 hits, 0 walks, and 7 strikeouts.

Sanchez could be very important in the playoffs, particularly if Ranger Suarez does not regain his form.

Demonstrating why fans (myself included) should never give up in a slugfest. I had written this game off after the 6th inning. Did catch the 9th.
I missed the top of first, watched the Jays run around for 6 in the bottom of inning. Felt neverending....

Switched back and forth a bit and every time it seemed like the Phils were making outs with RISP.

Figured I was the bad luck so I gave up and went to sleep. Bad move....

A very good 1 run 9th inning win by the fightin Phils. I was tracking the game. Bases loaded and the tracker had the third out so I thought it was extra innings. Checked back in and 2-1 win in the 9th. Schwarber with another home run earlier in the game. Picked up another game on Atlanta.

Clutch hit by Clemens.....and win for the Phils, but they have to start hitting again. No hit into the 5th. Happy they pulled this out

Harper not running out his line drive was a very bad look. Almost cost them. He’s done that shit a few times this year
Reminds of when Jimmy Rollins used to do that now and then. Charlie used to put him on blast and he'd mend his ways for awhile but Harper is supposed to be one of the leaders. It's a bad look for sure. Fine him? LOL not sure what that would accomplish. You can't bench him, guys like him know it. Just hey Bryce ol' pal, let's not do that anymore, OK? OK we're good.

Big win behind Wheeler. 4 up on Milwaukee and 2 up on Dodgers for best record and have tiebreaker on both with today’s win - leaving them effectively 5 and 3 up. At the very least they have almost locked a bye up since the Brewers have to make up 5 games in 11.

Not really worth mentioning the Division as that’s pretty much done and dusted

Phillies fatal flaw?

Yeah, excellent season and have the pieces to go all the way, but there's plenty of competition and good teams for the playoffs.

What worries me -- the inconsistency and lack of efficiency in the offense. Don't do a good job of advancing runners and give away too many outs through strikeouts and double plays.

Example -- tonight's 2-1 loss to Brewers. 16 strikeouts and 0-5 with runners in scoring position.

Clutch hitting is essential to go all the way.

Phillies now 94-65, have clinched NL-East and with the Brewers loss, are assured of a bye in first round of playoffs.

Is this the year they go all the way?

With the Yankees and Dodgers leaking oil, they could still get overall top seed too.

This was my fear....Phillies bats go cold, especially when Wheeler pitches a gem. What I didn't expect was an implosion of the Phillies bullpen.

Bring on the Mets!

Won't be easy---they are good at turning runners on base into runs, and producing big innings
They had 8 hits for the day, all singles.

The 5-run 8th inning was done with 5 singles, a walk, and 2 sac flies....the Phillies very seldom produce runs like that

Glad to see harper send one out and then castellanos nail another to tie it up 3-3.

Massive come-back win for the Phillies - huge boost to their offense heading to NY. Philly absolutely dead in the water without that win. Phillies showed some real toughness bouncing back from that shitshow decision yesterday.

That Phils lineup can do damage.

Regular-season I can see Thomson's decision to preserve a starter's arm for a long season, but I'm sorry, it's just nuts to not let your starter keep going after throwing a scoreless 1-hitter through 7 innings with a razor-thin 1-0 lead in the 1st game of a 5-game series. Just wasted, and burned, a brilliant performance by his "Ace" starter in a short 5 game series - you just don't roll the dice like that imho. If your ace is taking you to a 1-0 win with a 9K one-hitter and only needs six more outs, you ride that horse to the finish line or until they get in trouble (multiple hits.... multiple base-runners.... etc....). Look at it this way, Wheeler could not possibly have done worse than Hoffman if he comes out for start of 8th Inning - Hoffman gave up 2 hits and a walk.... and recorded no outs. Just absurd not to ride your Ace in that situation - every win in a 5 game series is so valuable and to just piss away a 1-hit performance from your Ace for no reason whatsoever is just flat dumb if you ask me (Thomson over-thought this one and got too cute by a factor of 2).

It wasn’t pretty but they showed resiliency and found a way to win.

Nah. At 110 pitches through 7. Still 4-6 more games possible for Wheeler this season. You possibly do that in a Game 5/7, but not Game 1 of NLDS.

Isn't going to be any more games for Wheeler if they keep giving away 1-hit efforts like that. You don't plan for his next 4 games when managerial decisions like that suggests he'll have no more starts. Also a pitcher can go to high pitch counts for a postseason (especially with the long rests provided by travel days) - high pitch counts matter over a 162 game season, not a postseason where you're pitching maybe 6 times with 4 or even 5 days rest consistently.

You compare Harper in the postseason to Judge and they are polar opposites. Judge did really well his first 3 playoff years, but ever since - woof. .758 total OPS and sinking fast. Highest OpS since 2019 is .738 in ALDS. .206 total BA.

Dude is an Inner Circle HOF guy during the season, but brutal in the playoffs

Speaking of brutal - Bob Costas just never shuts up.

That is a good point. Harper has a career playoff OPS of 1.024.

Barring a miracle, that's that. Mets hot at the right time. Phillies not so much.

LFGM! Exciting year for us, this is all house money and unexpected but the team has been red hot at the right time.
