PSU and Cornell to meet in Florida

Vito looked very aggressive on Saturday, with lots of movement. Moreso than I recall from the last time I saw him. Should be an excellent game of cat & cat if he and RBY square off.

@NothingMeaningful — What’s Darmstadt’s deal, and do you think he’ll take on Dean/Beard at that event?

Cornell stuff already discussed above, and surely more will follow below. I'll head to the championship match...

Arizona State or Va Tech surely will win the other half of the blue pool.

Assuming Penn State wins it's half of the blue pool, and considering wrestlestat-listed starters, here's a few intriguing matchups for the championship match;
(Note: PSU must get by Cornell first!!)

vs Arizona State
133: McGee vs Bravo-Young
149: Parco vs Bartlett
197: Norfleet vs Dean or Beard (added since it's really close for the starting job)
285: Schultz vs Kerkvliet (Schultz won 14-8 at 2021 NCAA's)

vs VA Tech
133: Myers vs Bravo-Young (RBY won 5-3 at 2021 NCAA's)
149: Andonian vs Bartlett
157: Brady vs Barraclough
174: Lewis vs Starocci
184: Hunter vs Brooks
285: Traxler vs Kerkvliet

Darmstadt vs Dean would be a fun one if it actually happens. I’m sure they had their scraps in the Cornell room, but Max has since built into 197 and become absolutely vicious on top.

Kerk and Schultz is another neat possible matchup. Both are accomplished world class wrestlers. Schultz is a handfighting and positioning monster, but a healthy Kerk is a dangerous Kerk

Rby is built to take out aggressive guys. I like him fairly comfortable in this match-up. His re-attack game is too much.

I would love to see Nick Lee bumped to 149 for a match against Yianni and Bartlett wrestle 141 for the match against Cornell. Doubt it happens b/c Bartlett would have to shrink down when he is trying to bulk up for the whole season.

I have no inside information, other than Coach Grey saying wrt the Bearcat Open a few weeks ago:
Darmstadt is dealing with an injury which kept him out of the competition.

No idea how Darmstadt and Cardenas match up, although what really matters is how the coaches think each would do against other teams, where familiarity with Darmstadt will be missing. Hopefully, we'll find out at CKLV if Darmstadt is healthy enough to go.

Dean's best position was always top.

However, there's a reason why Darmstadt's opponents not only don't choose bottom against him, they also don't choose top, and why he chooses top, as well (he beat Willie Miklus 9-0 with like six minutes riding time).

Yeah - I think everyone would love to see it but have never seen Cael mess with a lineup for a dual.

Speaking of bulking up, can you really bulk up through a season? I think it's been discussed but it's hard to add good weight while having wrestling practice during the season. Then factor in needing to be back down to 149 for duals which limits Beau's ability to really eat that much and I don't see how it's done. Then the fact that Cael prioritizing rest over all other things and I don't think it can be done.

Exception is obviously Kerk who doesn't need to worry about making weight ever. 231 was definitely a bit eye opening. He weighed 228 at Maryland last year after no working out at all and got back to 238 for Big Tens and NCAAs. I'm hoping it's just part of a plan (haven't heard anything about injuries with him)

If it happens, Schultz vs kerk would be a great opportunity to assess growth/health.

That match last year was interesting. Definitely a huge test for Kerk. He lost a shootout on the feet to Schultz which I never would have expected. Thought he could get ridden (Schultz is big) but he had no issue getting out.

Maybe DT can wrestle Dake for the tiebreaker if the score were somehow even at the end between Cornell and PSU. DT has avenged his losses to JB ... Dake and Cox remain on the hit list.

Actually, I'm curious who from the US will go against Iran this winter in the folkstyle & freestyle "Bout at the Ballpark" in Texas. And whether we will see DT vs. Yazdani #5 or Steveson vs. Zare, among others.

Let's hope Florida's duck season doesn't impact the wrestling

Don’t say that name three times!

I agree on your first point. However, I suspect that is widely known, and that Vito will not play into it carelessly. My thinking is more along the lines that he could try to make it a very physical matchup, and he has adequate movement and speed to push the action continuously without overcommitting. If he has the stamina to constantly be the aggressor, a couple of stall calls could factor in significantly and neutralize any superiority RBY may have in mat wrestling.

The other way I could see it go is by a very measured neutral strategy from both guys, with a SV takedown or TB RT determining the winner. I think it will be a very close match.

184 for Va Tech is Hunter Bolen.

Looks like it’s UNI, then Cornell.

UNI, then Cornell, and then most likely Az State. If you look at the AZ roster, they have a pretty solid young squad top to bottom with a few kids I wish we landed. They will surprise a few teams this year.
Blue poll #2, 7, 8, 12, 16, NR

Then there is the Iowa bracket. Just plain weak. They should have thrown at least one other top 25 team over there. Red pool #1, 5, NR, NR, NR, NR

So you're saying the winner of the Blue Pool is the Team Champion...

What are you talking about? Using dual meet rankings the PSU pool is 2, 7, 10, 11, 24, nr
Iowa pool is 1, 4, 5, 21, nr, nr

Anybody going to Niceville Fla? I have my tickets and hotel reservations. Looking for Penn State fans to have a beverage with!
