PSU and Cornell to meet in Florida

Didnt Vito beat RBY pretty soundly in freestyle a while back .. for whatever that is worth, if anything.
Yeah in 2018 before RBY even got to PSU ... gut wrench for the tech. That match is irrelevant now (and no I'm not saying RBY is a sure favorite either) RBY also got pinned by Tagg in 2019 after he was at PSU in the room and AA'ed. Kid has clearly jumped levels since then.

So, he was a year younger than Vito at that point. Is that significant?

Vito has three years of eligibility left, including this year. How about RBY?

What does years of eligibility left have to do with anything?? RBY has two years left FWIW.

It has to do with the fact that I didn't know how much eligibility he had left. I thought it might be interesting that RBY is younger than Vito but has less eligibility. Nothing more than that.

That match last year was interesting. Definitely a huge test for Kerk. He lost a shootout on the feet to Schultz which I never would have expected. Thought he could get ridden (Schultz is big) but he had no issue getting out.
It was all Schultz. Kerkvliet was at the tail end of a one-month whirlwind of last-minute preparation and training. Can't remember exactly, but I believe our guy had one takedown, the rest were Schultz's.

What I do remember is Kerkvliet's nonstop shooting. It was impressive, and a completely healthy Lion with another year to train could turn this result around. We'll see.

While weight is a metric that we can pretty easily see and understand, fitness and strength are not things that be so easily quantified. Particularly after a sickness; weight will return faster than strength and endurance. I have no doubt that Kerk will be significantly stronger and fitter than he was at B1Gs or NCAAs.

That was based on the Rose Colored Goggles Rankings. Jeez, get with it!

UNI, then Cornell, and then most likely Az State. If you look at the AZ roster, they have a pretty solid young squad top to bottom with a few kids I wish we landed. They will surprise a few teams this year.
Blue poll #2, 7, 8, 12, 16, NR

Then there is the Iowa bracket. Just plain weak. They should have thrown at least one other top 25 team over there. Red pool #1, 5, NR, NR, NR, NR
Iowa doesn't voluntarily travel if they have a tough wrestling assignment!

Remember when we shared Big10 dual honors with them when they didn't wrestle the other top 3 teams in the Big10? No PSU, Ohio St or Michigan as I recall, and we wrestled both. I think I am missing someone else

I would just like to state on the record that every time a Fletch gif is posted it is getting a like from yours truly. You have my word on that...

Sincerely,

Man, 149 is absolutely ripe for the picking.

I get that Lee, Eierman, etc aren't backing down from the challenge/depth of field of 141 but the depth at 149 is basically non-existent if you remove Yianni.

I think the top 4 is pretty clear. Yianni, Sasso, Wilson, Abas. Top 2 are self explanatory.

Wilson because he's placed 3rd twice (at deeper weight classes even if they're different)

Abas IMO has jumped levels this year (maybe the whole knowing your team will be there thing helps! What a shocker). He's bonused every one of his wins this year (including Gfeller, who I thought was washed tbh until he handily beat Blockhus, who beat Beau last year pretty easily) and gave Yianni all he wanted.

That being said, nobody is really upset proof except Yianni (including Sasso, who almost lost to Parco last year) so I guess your statement is correct that it's ripe for the picking. I get Yianni wrestles close sometimes but there's a reason he's never lost in college except one time where he self 6'ed.

Don’t count out Andonian for Top 4. That dude is dangerous. Had Sasso on his back (albeit briefly) at one point in their match the other week.

Without a doubt, him and Lovett are launchers so they're major wild cards. Even crazier is we haven't touched on Yahya yet, who actually finished 3rd last year. He also arguably beat Sasso in 2020 Big Tens but the refs robbed him.

Bartlett will get a very good gage at Florida
Lara from 5th year senior at UNI who was a NQ last year (wins over Parco/Degen/MVB) so he's not slouch, certainly no worse than Crooks.
Then Yianni, who is as tough as it gets
Then depending who wins the other pool, Andonian or Parco.

Speaking of Kyle Parco? I see a ton of parallels with him last year and Beau. He was a 141 who didn't win the spot at Fresno. Ironically he wrestled Ogunsanya and Crooks at NCAAs last year. He ... wait for it, beat Ogunsanya in SV and Crooks by 1 at NCAAs. 😂

Yahya beat Abas 6-2 and 8-1 at NCAAs with over 3 min of riding time in the second match. He single handedly sent Abas to the 7th place match. I think it's fair to say he's top 4 unless he gets beat. CKLV is this weekend. How bout we take a chance to see how he looks this season first?

I feel a lot of guys would be undefeated if they don’t get beat.

How's his deadlift?

How's his deadlift?
Negligible -- he attends Northwestern.

Buck makes a good point. That said, Abas' season was highly unstable between Stanford essentially kicking the team off campus + cramming in extra classes to graduate early thanks to the Stanford fustercluck. Gotta think he'll be much better this year.

Anybody going to Niceville Fla? I have my tickets and hotel reservations. Looking for Penn State fans to have a beverage with!
