My sons got theirs this morning, after a wait in line that one son described as "heinous." (I guess that most of the PSU fraternities had their winter formals last night, and they had to get in line about 6:00 AM this morning.) I'm having a hard time working up sympathy for him/them.

He texted me a photo of the ticket. Face value was $150. Prices are going up. That seems like a fair chunk of change for a student ticket.

Sounds like they are paying full list price.

At the $150 price level it sounds like the student seats are in the end zone bleacher section. Face value is $150 which is what the university paid to get them. I know students are accustomed to getting discounts but there's no way the university was gong to pay $150 for a ticket then turn around and sell it for a loss. It's not like a home game where the university owns the seat and is therefore able to charge whatever it sees fit.

Posted this to Howie earlier:
Just got word from my grandson at State College. He was in line at 4:am this morning and was able to get one Rose Bowl ticket. Family first. He'll connect with one of his friends from PSU that graduated with Jobie. His friend has a job in California. I got him to Indy, now to Cal. Howie, how much am I bankrolling for this excursion? Happy for him. An old grouch as myself is living my life thru my grandkids.
WE ARE....

To posters/readers looking for inexpensive travel to Rose Bowl: A student told me she is flying round trip from Pitt to Las Vegas for $100 then driving to LA (3 hours?). A friend of hers is flying from NYC to Palm Springs for little over $300 then driving also.

Probably closer to 5 hours. And if there is a lot of traffic considering people will be heading back from Vegas after New Years? Could be even longer.

Orange Bowl student ticket 11 years ago was $75. $150 is steep but not shocking.

My son and his friends all got their tickets yesterday as well They are in Tunnel 13, which is the visitors side end-zone corner. They are flying from Harrisburg to Las Vegas and are staying with friends that graduated last year and are living in LA.

My Sugar Bowl ticket after the 82 season was $20 each and students were allowed to purchase 2 tickets. We got in line about 8:00 the night before and line had stretched around Rec Hall before we arrived and it was very cold that night.

Allegiant Air... I kicked this idea around but still not going to be able to make it.

Does allegiant charge to piss on the plane yet?

Are they staying in Vegas for New Year's Eve? Rooms are crazy high that night if not all sold out. Driving back to LA on New Year's Day or even day after will be a 5+ affair. Done it Sunday after thanksgiving and it took 7.5 hrs. Did it once after New Year's Eve and took almost as long. Advice is if one is gonna do it, get up and do it a 4am.

I haven't drive the LA to Vegas trip in some years, but I believe you take Interstate #15. My two salient recollections from that drive are:

1. People HAUL ASS on that freeway. Be prepared to get run over if you are not doing at least 80.

2. The Barstow McDonalds (right off the freeway) does a frickin' land office business. Maybe they have an In 'n Out there now, but the lines around that McDonalds were unbelievable.

What time of day did you drive back to Vegas? I'd think as long as it's in the morning, you'd be fine. Since those that go to Vegas for New Years probably aren't exactly going to be waking up early (or, if they are awake early, in no condition or mood to drive)

Thanksgiving - 2-3pm
New Years Day - 10-11am

Thanks. I should be on the road from Vegas to LA before 10am on NYD. Hopefully I don't hit slow traffic since me and (unnecessarily) slow traffic don't get along. Hopefully my flight will get in early.

God bless LafayetteBear, I live on top of a mountain with a mile of dirt road access. I don't know if I could do the LA driving thing.

Lost Wages to Lost Angels is generally a 5 hour drive. It can be done in 4:15 -- 4:30 if you start early, speed, have a good radar detector and don't encounter unusually heavy traffic.

Do the LA drive all the time (live in Pasadena). It can be bad at times but it's mainly do to volume. As far as actual drivers, I found Connecticut and Massachusetts drivers far more dangerous (e.g. have no friggin idea what they are doing).

Agreed...do it 2-3 times year and avg in that timeframe. Going Dec 27-30 this year for a post-Xmas getaway.

Blew my load in Indy, hard to believe I will get a better feeling/game in Pasadena for the price I paid in Indy.

You got a good feeling and blew your load. So you have that goin' for you, which is nice.

Sorry, you left that one wide open for comment. (Now someone will likely comment on this.)

The only challange I have in country driving is avoiding hitting a deer or a deer running into your car. I live 20 miles from my office, an had several deer running into me on the way to and from work. Also trying to drive the mile of township, dirt road like this morning. 8" depth of snow on the non-plowed dirt road.
