What is this sorcery? 17 full years before the sport existed?
Nope - Gable just got room guys and turned them into championsA couple of interesting tidbits:
PSU dominates lower weights.
Iowa shown to have #1 recruiting class in 1993 and its noted how many blue chip recruits they get.
Also: Lincoln McIlravy is good.
Iowa never got a top recruit, they were all JV wrestlers in HS developed into college wrestling monsters by Gable.A couple of interesting tidbits:

That said, he did get the equivalent of 7 extra JV guys in 4 years.Iowa never got a top recruit, they were all JV wrestlers in HS developed into college wrestling monsters by Gable.
My fondest Rec memory prior to Conoway vs Graff (and a few since). I remember telling my dad that McCoy kid was going to develop into something special.I was there the year before when Kolat made his NCAA and Rec Hall debut by pinning Zadick. They ended up in a tie with the Hawkeyes, but what a dual. Two amazing teams.
The NCAA only looked at 4 years, but they went from around 79 to 93 with the extra scholarshipsThat said, he did get the equivalent of 7 extra JV guys in 4 years.
Just imagine what we could do w/ that kind of advantage. Boggles the mind that such a 'loophole' could stay open that long. The NCAA only looked at 4 years, but they went from around 79 to 93 with the extra scholarships
This is why I come to this message board for finds like this one. Not to be asked if I am on drugs, which I am not, at the current moment.
Also, this was before my time of knowing what was happening in the world, but Iowa fans make it out that they had huge followings for wrestling. That arena looks empty for a 6-3 matchup. Seems odd to me.
The real SLUSH fund b4 the collective psychosis slush fund. That said, he did get the equivalent of 7 extra JV guys in 4 years.
TJ says somewhere in there that the crowd was 8-9k. Bigger than Rec, but not capacity for CHA (~15k)This is why I come to this message board for finds like this one. Not to be asked if I am on drugs, which I am not, at the current moment.

Just my own personal wish list. The National Wrestling Attendance Championship has only been important since 2011.
I am sure most know what this is referring to, but for the rest of us, how did Gable allegedly get 'extra scholarship'?The NCAA only looked at 4 years, but they went from around 79 to 93 with the extra scholarships

Gable assumed the scholarship limit was for out of state tuition, every time, even if a wrestler was in state. Hence, a lot more total scholarship money.I am sure most know what this is referring to, but for the rest of us, how did Gable allegedly get 'extra scholarship'?

I don’t think so exactly. I saw a story a while back and it was selected schools and selected programs. Several schools interpreted the rules correctly and never utilized the Gable approach at all in any sports; some were as you say; and some programs at particular schools - including Iowa wrestling, really stretched the bounds of interpretation. All of the Big Ten did this at the time (in all equivalency sports), though Gable did more with it than most, if not all.
Have a home in home with the Buckeyes at the Beav and the Shoe and obliterate the outdoor recordJust my own personal wish list.
In a year PSU and Iowa are not on each other's Big10 schedule wrestle duals at Iowa State and Northern Iowa.
Take the squad to the Midlands - just once.
One year schedule 4 duals in the BJC and take the attendance banner for a year.

The standard Iowa fan response (using very lawyerly arguments) is that it must not have been a big advantage since they didn’t win when these extra schollies were having an impact. Of course, they’re just focusing on the small 4 year window the NCAA looked at.
Looks like Gable was the naughtiest of them all.

There you are being lawyerly. The entire NCAA allows for grey-shirting - Grey-shirting is not some rogue conference rule that the NCAA specifically said was incorrect like this scholarship equivalency rule; a rule that the Big10 incorrectly promulgated and kept on the books, with some member schools taking serious advantage. I’m just shocked it was Delany who shut it down of all people and Ohio State never over-awarded.Is it really naughty if he was following the protocol the Big Ten allowed for? Kind of like grey-shirting recruits.

Let’s be serious, if this was Cael and his program, you guys would be going ballistic.
No need for me to reiterate what Chickenman said.Is it really naughty if he was following the protocol the Big Ten allowed for? Kind of like grey-shirting recruits.

Reminds me of being able to watch Lehigh matches on channel 39? when I was a kid.
Nice try. Nothing like grey shifting at all. Maybe if you try really hard you can even figure out for yourself some of the biggest differences. Is it really naughty if he was following the protocol the Big Ten allowed for? Kind of like grey-shirting recruits.
