Roberson enters portal tomorrow

It’s been clear that the CJF staff, including the HC himself, has been bad at evaluating HS QB talent except for maybe for Fields who bailed before signing day. They also appear to be very bad at developing what QB talent they have. I have seen many teams with a 3* or less QB look far more competent than what CJF has put on the field. SC seems to me like he should have been a much better college QB relative to his hype coming out of HS. Trace is the only one who seemed to play at or above his level of expectations, although I think he was a perfect fit for JoMo’s offense and it had more to do with Trace himself rather than the QB coaching he received. Allar could be the next one to bail before signing day. Why go to a team that has a bad track record for coaching up QB’s?
I agree with what you said for the most part. However I do think Yurchich is the guy long term to develop QBs and make offense fun again in Happy Valley. Clifford was really coming on when he got hurt. Justin Fields gives a lot of credit to Yurchich for his development as a QB in their first year at Ohio State. The guy can coach QBs and offense. I don’t think Allar bails, I think he comes to Penn State because of Yurchich.

Yes, but if CJF bails, does Yurchich stay? And I have not seen much development of Roberson under his tutelage.

This is one of a couple of major beefs with Franklin. Too often we have square pegs in round holes at key positions schematically and his coaches are either unable or unwilling to adjust. Joe Moorhead is the only coordinator Franklin has had with the demonstrated ability to provide major schematic adjustments. That is a major problem and it is where we are until Clifford gets back to 100% because Yurcich has never demonstrated the ability to adjust from what he does.

I agree. I believe Yurchich is a great hire. QB is the position they separates good from great teams. Clifford is much improved this season. But his legs have been a big part of that and this offense. If he couldn’t run, the plan today would fail.

Roberson is a dual threat QB. He came here to run the RPO and that isn’t Yurchich. Kudos to Roberson for not bailing but he is now a square peg fitting in a round hole. Allar fits him perfectly and I will be interested what he can do with him from start to finish if he stays for his career.

I think Moorhead did more damage than good with his schemes. He had our best offense since 1994. I don't know if any half-decent coach would have looked bad in 2017
We didn't have the best offense since 94. Both Darryl Clark led offenses were better and I would argue both O'Brien offenses were better once they reached their peak. Given the limitations at quarterback in 16/17, what Moorhead did was absolutely amazing given he only used about 25% of the offense he planned to run when he got to Happy Valley.

So you think the Darryl Clark offense of 2008-09 was better than the ones with Saquon Barkley, Trace, Godwin, Hamilton, Gesicki, etc?
Absolutely. I don't think it was even close for that matter. The 08 team in particular was considerably better. We were way better at QB. Clark was an asset, not a hindrance. Williams, Butler and Norwood were better than Godwin, Hamilton and Thompkins. The Shuler/Quarles combo was not as good as Gesicki but both were better blockers. The line was better as well.

I just have a hunch about this coaching staff. We lost our #2 who is playing well in the SEC. Loyalty doesn't have to be to only one player. I propose this coaching staff was too loyal to one QB. I don't care who's name you put in at that QB spot. I do flaw their system. These results and our situation at QB make me the master of the captain obvious armchair coach. But who can deny that is what happened . SOmeone has to be held accountable. I own a business and the buck ALWAYS stops with me.
Almost every coaching staff is loyal to one QB, especially a third year starter who is good. Tell me one program that has a quality third year starting QB and they play the backup off and on just to keep him happy.

1) There seems to be a large disconnect between recruiting rankings and what actually transpires with those recruits. 2) Clifford should never have been in uniform yesterday. I don't know the inner workings of the team and staff, but he should have been in street clothes regardless of the situation with the back-up quarterbacks.
Yeah because every coach would sit their starting QB who was medically cleared to play when they don’t have a decent backup.
