Ross Perot has died.

Old friend worked for EDS, Perot's company, about 1970 or so. He quit our company but returned a week later. Any of you who remember EDS it was strait laced IBM image. My friend started with EDS but they criticized his shoes, so he bought tasseled loafers. He was told that won't work, we want wing tips, so he quit and returned to us.

EDS had changed a bit by the 90s. They were still straight laced but not down to criticizing shoe choice. Worked with their office in Herndon, VA.

A man who made his fortune on government contracts, and his fame on criticizing government spending. I did admire his opposition to the war in the Persian Gulf.

Did a number of projects and JVs with EDS throughout the '80s. Can't really speak to the internal culture, but it was one of the easiest, most professional companies with which to work.

The man deserves great credit for forcing GHW Bush and Clinton to address the federal deficit in the '92 election. We need another Ross Perot today, in this age where nobody in DC even acknowledges that they are spending us (more accurately - our children) into oblivion. A conspiracy of short-sightedness and placing the next election over the long term interests of our country.
He was an Eagle Scout. A scout is thrifty.

I voted for him twice.

i voted for him also, and had several occasions to work on contracts where they were a supplier in the 1990-95 period. they had to work to get some of the GM culture out of the company. i think Perot referred to NAFTA as a giant sucking sound taking jobs south. in general he was correct.

Ran into him and some security guards under the bowels of the Capitol Bldg while heading from the House to Senate side through all the tunnels (anyone who’s worked on the Hill knows what I’m talking about when you take the walk rather than ride the little subway).

We almost bumped into each other as we were both hurrying. I said sorry Mr. Perot, he said “how are you doing young fella”. I got a kick out of that. He was tiny - his security guys were quite large

I worked for IBM for 25 years and Perot was a legend there long before he showed up in the public's eye (he worked for IBM for a couple of years before leaving to found EDS). He brought a whole lot of IBM's image/culture along with him to his new company.

One year He apparently met his annual sales quota in just 2 weeks. Lol

RIP Mr. Perot .... a great American

If an American serviceman is ever used to shine some Prince’s gates when I’m president. Take me out back. Shoot me. And call it a mercy killing. W’s jaw dropped during debate and Bubba was snickering in background

I'll see if I can get you one.

It'll probably turn out like the Jack Klompas scene in Seinfeld, where he breaks Morty's garage window in order to get the beltless rain jackets.

Lol. Great post and episode

Cap toed oxfords were also on the approved shoe list so there was some flexibility :). Plain toed oxfords were allowed but not highly thought of

Perot had a commitment to people left behind in danger. He financed a commando raid to free two EDS employees held in prison in Iran, and spoke out often about freeing American POWs from Vietnam.

Loved his country.
The Ken Follett book On Wings of Eagles tells the true story of the actions to get the employees out of Iran after the Shah fell and the embassy was over run. Great book, and great story.

Don't think Perot could have chosen a better author to tell that story.

Follett is terrific, and has covered so many topics and historical periods. I think his Kingsbridge series with 3 classic novels about cathedrals and life in England in stories from the 13th century to the 16th century was amazing.

I'm tired of cleaning posts that are filled with politics from this thread. The board rules are pretty clear -- No Politics. Please adhere to those rules in this thread, and in all other threads.
