vs. Pirates through 6th. Pirates continue to show they can't beat the better teams in baseball. Except for the Giants, this run has been against sub par teams.

Most teams are subpar teams compared to the Pirates.
OK, sub .500. The Pirates offense leaves much to be desired. They can beat teams like the Phillies with this, but you can't expect your pitchers to continue doing this all year. If the offense doesn't improve they're going to lose with more regularity.

Ultimately they need Pedro to hit. They don't have a bomber in the lineup, and I agree, eventually it will catch up to them.

When Walker comes back, Mercer needs to sit. Alvarez is nothing but a platoon player at his point, and and not a very good one at that.

He's pitching like a tremendous machine.
That he is. He's also in good shape to pull this off. Big lead and pitching against a team that isn't the most disciplined at the plate. Cervelli may be the key. He has the best plate discipline on the team

Hmmmm. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't jump on the bandwagon. I see the guy is perfect through 8. I hope he gets it.

Yeah, how dare he try to get on base. Let's hit him in the head.

That's even dumber than the rule that you can't bunt against a guy who has a no-hitter going.

You don't read too well do ya. Buzzing someone's light tower means you knock him on his arse. Not hit him.

Just makes him a pu**y. No biggie
I'd agree if you're going on the premise that he tried to get hit, which he did not. Just an example of why no hitters and more so, perfect games are such a rarity. Everything has to go right. It is amazing how often things like this seem to happen on the last AB. I don't think he wanted to go 3-2. I thought he should have gone a little down and away. May have got him swinging, but who knows?

Look at the gif. He clearly tried to get hit. Look at his elbow drop down.

From your lips to gods ears!

I don't know if it's worth it or not but it seems like the Pirates interest in Hamels is for real(would he accept that trade?). Wouldn't want to decrease Hamels' value but maybe something could be worked out with the Phillies paying a huge sum of money. The Pirates can't afford the full contracts obviously but Howard would boost them and Hamels would make their rotation one of the best in baseball. The Pirates have the prospects to make something happen without crippling their farm.

He did what Utley does all the time. I doubt Utley would have done that in that situation though.
Whatever. Like someone else said, it's on the umpire, but things like that are never easy calls. The rule is that you have to try to get out of the way of the pitch, which didn't happen today. Whatever, it's a W on the scoreboard.

MLB rules 6.08b: Batter is given first base if the pitch hits him, unless 1) it's in the strike zone, or 2) the batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball.

So even if he wasn't trying to intentionally get hit, he clearly made no attempt to get out of the way of the pitch.

If you want them to avoid the pitch, then outlaw the arm pads. So long as they are legal, batters don't mind getting hit. And if you are going to pitch inside to a guy wearing arm pads, don't be surprised if he lets the ball hit him.

Which brings up one of my favorite baseball stories, about John McGraw. It might be apocryphal, as I can't find any trace of this online. Anyway, McGraw was the most hated man in baseball, he was loathed by opposing players and umpires alike. One game he must have really pissed off everyone, because when he comes up to bat, gets hit by the first pitch. Umpire says he didn't try to get out of the way, get back in the box. So the pitcher knows that he has free rein and commences to hit him three more times, each time the umpire puts him back in the box. LOL.

Pirates are not going to make a play for Hamels. Phillies would want either Glasnow or Taillon in return, and Huntington has said those guys are not available. The other top prospect, Kingham, is down with TJ surgery, so he would not be in play at this time. I don't think the Pirates have another pitching prospect far enough along to make the Phillies interested, so long as they insist on getting a big time pitching prospect as part of the return.

The Phillies have said that Kyle Drabek and Cosart weren't available right before trading them. I agree it's not likely but you NEVER say your top prospects are available especially when you are big fish hunting on the trade markert. Taillon is still a huge risk. Hamels is maybe the most durable pitcher in baseball. Actually the stuff I had heard was that Polanco would be the centerpiece.
