September 1: First Contact Day For Class of '18

I read this:

... as meaning that money and coaching buy-in are separate issues. Could be wrong -- often in sports, when they say it's not about money, it's about money -- am just reading it literally.

Also curious because I didn't think you could get any offer from Cael unless he bought in. So it does make me wonder what else Berge would want, that he doesn't think the coaches are ready to provide.

Yes, I can see that - literally, it reads as two separate issues. That said, it's probably about money as you stated.

Step 1 - find the money (still going after Fix might be the holdup)
Step 2 - deciding if it's worth it even if you free it up

"Incoming recruits A.J. Nevills of Clovis, California, and Mason Manville of Virginia by way of Blair Academy and then Wyoming Seminary will not be incoming. Both have opted to instead enroll in the fall of 2017 to start their four-year eligibility competition clock."

Thanks El-jefe, I missed that on Nevills. That takes away any temptation for the staff to pull Nevills redshirt if Cassar doesn't make it back from his injuries.

Do you think they will both RS that year?
Manville -- yes. He'll arrive with JR Nolf at 157 and SO Cenzo at 165. He's very academically focused, so I imagine his plan is to shirt and get both BS and MS or MBA degrees in 5 years.

Nevills -- probably. Depends upon Cassar's health, and also how far up Rasheed and Nickal move up. He'll arrive with all 3 of them as JRs, and Stout a SO. This presumes his long-term plan is to stay 197 ... if he eats during his grayshirt year, then I imagine his plan becomes shirt but be on call in case of injury.

So then if $ is the issue with Berge, I was thinking he might be hard to get because Manville, Nevillis, and Nick Lee will all come on the books in 2017 with only Gulibon going off. Figure Hall and Suriano probably didn't come cheap and 2018 already has Joe Lee. This may also make it hard to get Fix. If anyone can make it happen its Cael.

If NoVa is right and Manville is going ROTC, then he's a zero against the 9.9 rides.

I've heard Manville ROTC being dangled out there in the past, but haven't heard that confirmed.

I'm confused. So if Manville goes ROTC next year, then the following year enrolls at PSU and RS his money doesn't $ doesn't count in the 9.9 during his RS year? All years?

Can't go college ROTC until enrolling in college. And ROTC does not count toward the 9.9 rides.

I'm not completely up to date on ROTC, but IIRC there are 2-yr, 3-yr, and 4-yr scholarships. The 4-yr one is awarded nationally, the others are awarded locally. All of them are 100% paid tuition, books, and fees, plus a stipend that's probably around $500/month now -- regardless of which branch (Army, Navy, or Air Force). So a ROTC wrestler would have to pay for 1, 2, or 3 out of 5 years.

I think there are partial ROTC scholarships available -- no idea what the military commitment would be for those, or whether those would be attractive to a Manville.

Like I said, nothing would surprise me with Cael. Amestostate has good info but our version of him, Gobblin, seems to be pretty confident as well.

Have you heard anything from Goblin lately? It seems Berge and Penn State is a fairly recent development.

Berge may very well end up at Iowa however Goblin has been wrong before.

Like I said, nothing would surprise me. Plus, I think Brady said he projects at 149 but he is awfully big for a 149...If he had to go up, he would at least be sitting his RSFR year behind Nolf and would potentially have to battle it out with Manville. Same thing on our end with Kemdawg unless Kem moved down. BTW, Gobblin isn't the only "insider" who has wiffed.

We need big guys at 174-197. Would love to have Brady but he's a luxury.

Joe Lee coming in probably at 157 too. Berge would fit perfectly at 149.

Thanks for sharing. Someone mentioned a lot of PSU stuff on his Twitter so I went stalker and checked it out. There is a lot of NLWC, Mark Hall and Cael on there. May not mean anything but one can hope..

Gobblin kind of scoffed at that but I'm a where there is smoke kind of guy. We are pretty deep in that area but not in uppers...you guys need lowers. Plus, I think Nick Lee ends up a 49. I would not be shocked if Cael is not hard pressing a guy like RBY considering the Minne thing if it doesn't look like Fix will work out.

He was wrong about Suriano, but correct about Lee. I'm sure Ames isn't 100% either. Fun for us fans to get these insider tidbits, even more fun when they pan out.

if he would have called Teaz, well then he has Midas touch. True insiders are few and far between and most talk off line not on it. Most "insiders" are guys with enough time to read the boards, the news papers and follow twitter and then make an educated guess.

fact!

Ohio state really needs someone to take over for NATO doesn't fix have them on his list?

U may be right. I don't think anyone called Teasdale to Iowa

Actually, I heard Nebby is running a strong race in this one.
They have Williams and they just signed a solid 25 pounder last week. They will be graduating 5-6 staters and white just transferred so $ shouldn't be a problem.

If he could theoretically keep that weight? He would fit perfect for us too.

I wonder about that as well. Seems unlikely he is a career 149 and it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't last more then a season or two at that weight.

Let me be very clear.
Berge wants to go to Penn State.
That does not mean I believe he will compete for Penn State.

Berge wants a good chunk of scholarship money and his past injuries are a concern.

I was incorrect on a few posts.
I thought Spencer Lee would end up committing to Penn State.
I did comment he was picking Iowa a week before it was announced.

Check my history of posts. It should show how efficient I have been.

I never expect anyone to be 100% correct no matter how much they know. Heck, even if Cael came on here and told us his honest opinion about every recruit he would occasionally be wrong.

What kind of message board are we running here, that posters admit to mistakes?

I am an Iowa fan that happens to believe Ames in regard to Berge. Why would someone that's going to commit to Iowa be tweeting everything Penn State and nothing Iowa for weeks? I have no first hand information on the matter, but it does seem pretty clear that he likes Penn State

Who can blame Cael, Mr. Berge, Mr. Lee or the next Mr. Big Time Parent for leveraging their childs future for an equivalent scholarship offer. Its the american way! If this was football and the $ was = it would be one thing, but it isnt, so it never will be.

The arms race continues! Simply some play it better than others.
