September 1: First Contact Day For Class of '18

I put my foot down over his request for Budweiser - he'll have to be content with unmarked 20s

Just in time after a RS to fill in for a bumped up Nickal. Me likey

What about Hall? I think it's a LOT more likely that Hall ends up at 184 after Nickal graduates. However, projecting weights more than a few months out is a total crap shoot so no telling what happens.

Hall wants to wrestle freestyle 74kg/163 lb. Bumping up to 184 puts that in serious jeopardy. I'm not sure he's big enough to put on the lbs to be a good international 86 kg/189 lb.

I'd be willing to bet you that Mark never gets above 174lbs. 184lbs is a target weight for PSU right now.

Hall often looks much smaller than his international freestyle opponents at 74kg.

I don't think he will ever have the frame for 184lbs.

Griffith has grown to 160 -- same weight as Brooks. Not a lot of lineup flexibility with Wreck Hall at the next weight up. As good as Griffith is, Brooks looks more offensively explosive.

Beard may be fallout of the decision to grayshirt AJ Nevills.

IIRC, Teemer beat Busiello a couple years ago in the NY state finals. I think he's up to 132 now, so he's probably being p

Interesting that all 4 are nonresidents despite some big PA names in 2018 (Beard, Sasso, Hoffman, Walters, Jones, Duggan, etc.). No complaints, just an observation. In Cael we trust.

I'd assume Beard may get more attention after NLI day, based on the size of next year's class. I think if you can get Beard, you have to get him, regardless of Nevills.

I agree, but then I don't have to allocate the 9.9 rides.

To play devil's advocate: If Beard and Nevills are too overlapped, maybe Cael would rather wait a year and go after Josh McKenzie, or wait until 2020. Or, maybe it's related to Beard's 2 losses to Warner at cadet team trials.

Ames' statement to me reads that Berge wants to come here, he needs to have the finances work for him (as in being out of pocket at Iowa's offer, or at least being in the ballpark) and the coaches have not yet made a decision if they want to tie up that amount of scholarship on a kid who likely projects at the same weight as some other scholarship guys. Manville coming in in 2017, Joe Lee coming in 2018, Nolf on roster for 3 more years, etc.

PSU out-of-state is pretty expensive. More than Iowa.

I may be off, but that's how I took his statement.

Good to hear this, Ames has always been spot on with his info.

Does anyone think Brady's performance yesterday against Griffith at WNO moves the bar at all regarding PSUs interest?

Define "PSU's interest." Berge was supposedly visiting PSU on his way home from WNO, so PSU was already at least interested enough to meet him.

If you mean money, doubt it changes much. Coaches hold the leverage here: with the middleweight stockpile, he needs them more than they need him.

Thanks El Jefe. Yes I was referring to $ interest. Your answer makes perfect sense.

I think with our stockpile of middleweights, it makes more sense to go after someone like Beard, providing depth for upper weights. I recall someone mentioning the redundancy with AJ Nevills at 97. It appears there is more depth at the middle weights though.

That Marinelli must be something else. Says a lot for the guy we got (Hall) who handled him quite easily. I like that...
Ya know, now that I think about it that was a dumb comment that I made here. I forgot about the Iowa fans argument that Hall was bigger and may have had a few pounds on Marinelli at the time. I mean, they forget all about the weight difference while putting Marinelli on a pedestal for beating Sorensen in the practice room but hey... who's keeping track of all that.

If Marinelli is laying a whooping on everybody in the Hawk room, I take that to mean he wrestling aggressively and offensively. Does that mean the Hawks will be red-shirting him now. May take an concerted effort to beat that offense out of the kid and get him trained to the push, push, push "heeeee's staaaaallling" move.

Sounds like good preparation for freestyle wrestling--saw a good bit of that at the Olympics!

Got to love the off season. For a supposed knowledgeable fan base some of the posters are giddy with crazy expectactions on Marinelli and Kemmerer. Kids have no where to go but down with what some are expecting/hoping.

That "today's practice" threat on Hawkeye Report is a doozy.

Marinelli?
Someone claiming he's beaten Sorenson.
And whipped Evans 3 takedowns to none & face smushed Evans.

Someone even claims Marinelli beat Sammy Brooks. Lol

I was thinking the same thing. The expectations are crazy for both of those kids. Marinelli is too small to wrestle 165 this year and beat Hall, but he is beating Brooks and Evans who probably weigh around 185-190lbs right now. I think Kemerer is going to be good this year, but I'm not expecting him to be in the finals this year especially since he is moving up in weight. I think JoJo is better than him and the physically stronger of the two. That will be an interesting bout this year. I actually really like Kemerer. He seems like a great kid.

Not that different than a number of posts on this board regarding Suriano and Joseph. Just sayin'.

Is this Mike Evans....lost track of him; thought he was on the staff at Cal Poly?

Back with the Hawkeyes?

Hey, thanks.

Update on his 'stache?

My friends and I sat right behind Gilman's Step-Dad, Mom, and Girlfriend (who is Mike Evans sister) during an away dual in WI (where I live) this past season and we made some conversation during the meet, at one point they showed us a picture of Mike Evans because one of my buddies had mentioned The stache. He had a pretty massive beard/stache combo and looked like a mountain man, pretty awesome lol. Although I'm not sure it its still quite that wild these days.
