D3 blocked this rule change but it passed in D1 and D2 college football. Hate this. I understand trying to shorten games of other sports but there aren't many college football games per year. Games are meant to be long, to be an all day event. They should at least add in a 2 minute warning then. Seems weird that the clocks won't run for the final 2 minutes after a first down, yet no 2 minute warning. What happens if the first down occurs right around the 2 minute mark? Going to be hard to judge if the clock should stop or not.

Yeah, more time for commercials! They are going to water down their product to the point that people eventually lose interest.

Not to mention how this will affect statistical records. Might as well have two eras, pre and post continuous clock, so far as individual and team statstics go.

Awful change. I like college football and do not want to see a shorter game. I am all for player safety, but perhaps there is some other way to achieve it like snap counts for individual players. Also, with NIL aren’t they getting further compensated now for the risk of playing this game?

I’m in favor…games are too long today, and you’ve got more plays per game (and longer games) due to higher tempo offenses and more passing. Get games back to three hours.

Keep in mind too that they already changed it for going out of bounds- the clock used to stop when going OOB and not starting until the snap. Now it starts when being set. So they’ve already lessened the number of actual game time and this is doing it more.

So have fewer commercials…

If they want to keep the number of advertisements, do an on screen bug like soccer rather than so many commercial breaks.
I’ve said many times that I’d love more advertisements on jerseys, fields, on screen, etc, to cut down on commercials.

Some of these games with pass happy or high tempo offenses have been pushing four hours.

I really didn't think the rule was that big of a deal. Surprised it didn't happen long ago to be honest.
I do agree there should be a 2 minute warning added to the half and end of the game with the change. That's my only "issue" with this.

The part where the clock will stop within the last 2 minutes of game and half is crazy to have no 2 minute warning. Say the first down happens at 2:04, do they stop the clock then at 2:00 or just keep it running bc it occured outside of 2:00? Absolutely moronic.

Yep they need to run ads during the game, and have patches on their jerseys. Its better than cutting game time. Whats next, 12 minute quarters?
Maybe we can just use the rosters to determine the playoff spots like ESPN wants and play only commercials instead of the regular season games?

I’d assume it would be like basketball where the clock keeps running if the play stopped outside of two minutes…though it wouldn’t be hard to stop it at 2:00 in that instance if they wanted to.

This one doesn't bother me that much, it will lower scoring and increase the value of any 1 score. It will also restore some of the lost value of playing good solid defense and forcing teams to use double-digit plays on scoring drives.

forcing teams to use double-digit plays on scoring drives.

It shouldn't have any affect on the number of plays used to score, unless teams go to lengths to implement such. IE Army 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

Merely that with 7-10 less plays per game, scoring will very likely decrease some because of less opportunities.

But how many more commercials can they run?

Commercials lead to money which is what leads to the TV contracts. A 5 year old comprehends this. The more commercials the better for the schools. Fans will tolerate it. Especially those that get simple concepts.

Didn't say it would have an impact on the number of plays needed per scoring drive.... what I said was that it would bring back a reward for teams that play solid defense and force teams to use double-digit plays to drive the length of the field (again, it's good defense that forces the need for many plays per scoring drive). IOW, it will decrease scores the most for teams that require the most average plays per scoring drive (and avg yards per point needed) on defense. These are metrics that are highly correlated to winning (i.e., requiring the highest YPP - yards per point - on defense... and conversely fewest YPP on Offense) and the value of forcing teams to use lots of plays and yards to score on defense just went up under this new rule... IOW; the new rule increases the value of playing solid, fundamental defense (and increases the value of a single score on the margin).
