I had the same disease for many years and had the same surgery to have my colon removed in September of 2015. It is a nasty disease when it is at it's worst. If he gets the same thing done that I had done, he will require multiple surgeries over a period of time. I lost 40 pounds during that time (and I am not a big guy), and it took me almost a full year to get back to 100%. He has a long road ahead of him, but he is young and should be able to bounce back.
