Looks like the kind of receiver we need on OUR offense. Had a great game. Doesn't seem we have a big body guy on our team that equals him. Is this our system ? Scratching my head . Thoughts?

He left, not much that could be done.

He was in his own head at PSU and couldn't get out of it. Maybe you missed his 2-3 years of dropped balls and failing to take over any games....except for maybe 1. For some reason he simply seemed to lack confidence at PSU.

If he was still on the team Clifford would still be forcing the ball to KJ and JJ would likely enter the portal regardless. Maybe he saw the handwriting on the wall that KJ was gonna be the guy this year and he didn’t want to play second fiddle to Cliffords best bud.

IIRC he left before Tommy decided to transfer so that kind blows that theory out of the water. Not to mention when you have a talent like KJ, why in the hell would you not want to get him the ball as much as possible? Some more balance would be great, but I don't mind them trying to find ways to get KJ the ball. If you put JJ and KJ in the open field with the ball....which one do you want?

He could not catch a ball to save his life last year. It was similar to what Gesicki experienced in his freshman year. Geiscki worked hard to overcome it and we all know the results. Johnson had an NFL quarterback throwing to him last year and could not hold onto the ball. With the transfer portal the way it is maybe it was a good decision for him to leave given the uncertainty surrounding a new QB. We will never know.

This one misses the mark

Considering that Clifford will force the ball to KJ regardless if he’s open or not I can tell you if JJ was open and KJ had a db blanketing him Clifford would throw to KJ. Also perhaps JJ knew more than the fans did afa Stevens and his plans - maybe he could see that Clifford was really the number one qb during practices - so just because he left before Stevens doesn’t mean I’m wrong.

There's an interesting phenomenon at play on this board. We analyze our players and coaches to the point of "breaking down film," and take the very worst in execution or scheme and play selection and debate it endlessly.
On the other hand, we isolate the one successful moment or game, be it someone else's coach or a former player and bemoan the "fact" that our guys simply don't measure up.

All true...that's why PSU is only #5 in the nation today.

Wish him the very best but he had 1 good game this year. Last year when he was wasnt hurt, which has also been a problem this year, he couldn’t catch and had trouble getting separation.

Dumb. Just dumb.

JJ had an injured hand that made catching the ball exceedingly difficult. The injury continued after he portaled to Oregon after he graduated from PSU. The Oregon coaches discussed his injury openly and indicated that he was finally healthy and ready to contribute a week ago. Some of you need to grow up.

I think JJ would have had a really good senior year at PSU. I was extremely disappointed he transferred. Praying he continues to play well. Love to see the kid drafted in the top 3 rounds.

Seems like our tight end spot fills
In for the ‘big’ physical receiver type like Chris Godwin/ Allen Robinson somehow .

Never said it doesn’t work, only that it’s in my opinion one of the reasons that JJ may have left for the ducks.

Clifford forcing the ball to Hamler is why Freiermuth had 3 TD catches against MSU right. No offense but speculating that Johnson left because he knew Clifford would win the job and would “force” the ball to Hamlet is ridiculous.

I don't think Coach was disappointed. The room was getting very crowded.

Yes I know about Shorter . Just seems we favor tight end plays last few years . As above Shorter not on the highlight reels . System ?

I’m not sure why you keep posting this nonsense...Clifford has thrown to 13 different receivers in two games as well as 8, 9 and 11 different receivers in other games. In only two games did he only throw to four receivers and one of those Hamler didn’t even have the most catches, Friermuth did. I think you’re seeing what you have convinced yourself you’re seeing.

Okay, if you want to talk stats here’s my take. KJ has 37 receptions on the year which is more than double the next closest WR being Dotson with 17 receptions and Shorter with 9 receptions - 1 fewer than Slade has at 10. Point being that when talking about the WR’s it’s KJ and then everyone else. Again I’m not arguing that it isn’t working, KJ is a helluva talented receiver and you gotta get the ball in your playmakers hands, but Clifford does force the ball to KJ at times (likely due to their rapport) and this may have had some impact on JJ’s decision to leave if he saw similar results during practices.

Compare that to OSU where their top 5 WR’s have the following reception numbers: 30-28-19-15-14. Or how about Michigan’s top 4 WR’s at 27-22-21-20.

Maybe Hamler is the only receiver that gets open consistently. Maybe Clifford is told to get the ball to Hamler. There are a lot of things going on that you don’t know about that could cause his to throw to Hamler more than the others.
