A friend went up to the PS Hockey Game and visited the Skeller and found
that all the memorabilia was gone from the walls. He heard that they would
close on January 27th. The last I heard a couple of months ago was that
the new owner would have a new proprietor by February.

Over the years, I believe they have had 3 or 4 proprietors with Duke being
the one leaving soon. I heard he was going to Spring Mills to open a
farm to table restaurant. Over that time, it appears that even though new
management took over the Skeller, the memorabilia has pretty much
remained after change. I got out in '69 and all the old pictures etc. appear
to have always stayed despite new mgmt.

My questions are:
-- I presume the leases stipulated and with agreement from the previous
proprietor that the contents (memorabilia) would transfer to new mgmt.?

-- Since all of this stuff accumulated over the years, I presume the last guy
who has the lease can take what is readily movable when he leaves?

-- Any body know if the new Bldg. owner has all of it to protect it or is it all
gone for good?

Memorabilia, such as football pictures from the 1950's are not easily replaced
and we all know how long it took to get that much dust on them. Sadly, with all
that stuff gone, the character and feel of the place may never be the same.

The question is: do we patronize the new place when it's named after Paterno?

It's my understanding they took down the memorabilia because people were stealing it. I don't have any info on if it stays or goes.

Hopefully they also removed the stench of vomit and Mr. Clean

Was this on Saturday? I went up with my daughter on Friday to say goodbye to the Skeller (she was in town for a Sunday wedding) and saw stuff on the walls. I didn't pay close attention to it, but it appeared to be the memorabilia that has been there for years. Had some Rocks and then got a fraternity brother and his wife who live in SC to join us and conducted one last "case study" before going to the hockey game. That is the only bar I have ever been kicked out of in my entire life (for standing on booths multiple times back in 1985). To me, the Skeller and Phyrst are the two most fun college bars of all time. Very sad to see it go!

Yes we do wiz and excellent idea. Of course it would be named Joe Pa's and put that proposed bench with him on it right outside by the curb. That aught to get ESPN, the BOT's and others goat but good.

Not Spring Mills, will be out near the airport - Windswept Farm. Wife and I went on a tour last summer, Duke has some grand ambitions for his new place.

The one piece I would like to have is the Green Rolling Rock/Skeller clock with the airplane minute hand.
That would look awesome on my wall.

There will be plenty of "memorabilia" to replace the old stuff.

Everyone will be happy.

Norm, I knew a Norman that was called at times Storming Norman during my college years, 1973-1977. Would your last name happen to begin with an "A" ?

Stop and think for a moment. What do you think was in the bar when the original lease was signed? Probably nothing. If you sign an apartment lease, is there a clause in it that says anything that you hang on the walls becomes the property of the building owner? Doubtful. Same here. There is zero reason to think that the memorabilia belongs to the building owner rather than the bar owner. That stuff belongs to the business owner and would have passed through sale of the business, not the sale of the building. It's a pretty safe assumption that there's nothing in the lease that mentions it.

All the stuff belongs to current owner of the All American Rathskeller business, Duke Gastiger, and he can do with it what he wants. For example, he can take the stuff off the wall and put it in safe keeping if people are stealing it. Which they were and which he did.

That memorabilia is one of the few things (the other most notable one being the liquor license), that Duke owns that he could sell to the new proprietor (he might not even be able to sell the Rathskeller name). So it makes all the sense in the world that he should take it down to protect it. That said, you would be surprised how easily all the memorabilia can be replaced. The memorabilia business is HUGE and there are tons of it out there. The new owner could likely easily replace it (frankly, if the rumors about the new owners are true, they probably have more memorabilia in their possession than they ever could hang on the walls anyway). So I doubt that Duke will be able to strike a deal with the new proprietor of the bar that's going to go in there (particularly, if he is still asking the rumored $1M that he originally asked for)

Thought I'd address this separately since it's different that the memorabilia question.

The Skeller's lease expires at the end of February. The last day the bar will be open is Saturday January 27th. That gives Duke a month to remove the stuff that he owns from the premises. The new proprietor, currently still a secret, reportedly already has a deal, but it will assuredly take months before the bar will be ready to reopen. For obvious reasons, they will try to be ready for football season. Depending on how much work they'll need to put into the place, that may or may not be reasonable.

I was at the Skeller for a few hours this past Saturday, before heading to Otto's for dinner & then the hockey game. I still saw plenty of memorabilia on the walls, paying more attention to it than normal, recognizing it may be the last time I see it.

Confirmed with an employee there that the 27th is the last call. Also, FWIW, lots of rumors around State College that Jay Paterno is part of the ownership group taking over the lease on this space.

Your friend is prone to hyperbole.... yeah, SOME of the football pics were removed from the booths (notably booth#3 pictured below where iconic pics of Cappy et al. and Athl Dir Ed Czekaj, see pic below from Sat) as they were vulnerable to pilfering from souvenir-seeking drunkards... otherwise the usual Skeller ephemera is present...

Played hooky from work on Fri, picked a fellow alum up at the airport (flew up from JAX) ... then drove 225mi to get a primo booth at the Skeller at 1pm... did not leave until almost midnight (failed to make last call:(

If you go - Get your cases of Rock early, they run out VERY quickly after they start offering them at 5pm!!

I was there for "auld lang syne" on December 8th...watched a guy pull up a ladder and take down the "Back Bar" sign with a drill. The beginning of he end.
