Southern Scuffle - Jan 4 & 5

Yeah, for a few years there (around 10 years ago, as you say), the Scuffle was a legit tournament with some solid squads and a bunch of highly rated guys. In 2025, I think there were a grand total of two top-10 ranked guys. It's become a shell of what it once (briefly) was.
I used to go to the SS every year. Chattanooga is a great little city with plenty to do between sessions ( Ruby Falls, Rock City, downtown bars). They’re just not getting enough top level stuff to make the trip worthwhile anymore. I hit the Journeyman in Nashville instead to get my dose of PSU excellence. With the new year, we’re into the meat of the schedule. I’m looking forward to trundling through the snow to Rec Hall. 450+ miles each way! It’s hard to get enough of what Cael’s serving.

15 potential scoring wrestlers, but only

Yes, I believe this is correct. But the power of more than the ten best (one at each weight), also being of quality, is that the additional wrestlers eliminate scoring by other teams. For example, an all Penn State final would eliminate second place points altogether, thereby increasing the potential margin of team points victory.

Winter is here!

As we know it has to be true if it's on the internet. 😛 For a good laugh, check out this article. So much wrong with this one. Is this the "Onion" for the sport of wrestling? They can't even distinguish between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State 😅

They really should change their name to hypothetically sports. I won’t give them the dignity/revenue of a click though.

Cael’s comments post-scuffle

‘If you come here you’re going to get better. That’s just what happens’

- Cael Sanderson classic line in response to a question about why kids who aren’t in the starting lineup and could start elsewhere end up staying…
I also like where Cael said something along this line. Our non starters don't know how much they've improved until they wrestle a competitor from outside our room. Good stuff.

It seems like an amusing novelty for the moment, but these AI-generated articles are a plague. Tech companies once again trying to create demand where there's none, merely because they've discovered something is possible to do.

1:55 (When it comes to the lineup and next year) “Obviously you’re thinking of next year….a couple of years ago…but now we’re focused on next week.”

Would appear he has a plan. 😀

Also said Joe Sealy is “as advertised”.

I totally agree with you, this is only going to get worse and for all the wrong reasons. And to El-Jefe's point I shouldn't have clicked on the "story" to give them the clicks they are looking for, but I wasn't all that familiar with this sport's "news" outlet and I was curious. As I began reading it I was totally baffled. I wondered if it was an old story reposted, then quickly realized it was just a piece of trash....but must admit, it was so bad it was funny. And if the story wasn't bad enough, the writer's bio was equally hilarious.

Enough on this one, but just one last question. I've noticed this outlet appears to be from South Asia...and I've noticed a few others. I know India has some good wrestlers, but is this legitimate attempt to cover a sport that is growing in that region, or just a click bait factory out to make money? Probably the latter, but why wrestling?

Wow, to be so confidence and in control yet come across as humble and unassuming.
I know, you just have to love Cael. As you wrote, so humble and unassuming, but he exudes so much confidence and solid perspective. I know it's common knowledge, but it always brings a smile to my face when I see his wrestlers playing dodge ball and having fun in the background. :) I wonder how many coaches have recognized this and embraced this approach, and how many think it is silly and cling to their old ways treating practice as a grind?

Utah Valley plays Dodgeball now......Thanks to BearClaw :)

Much like the tabloids you can buy at any check out line in a store.

You just have to hope that people are smart enough to figure that out. Oh wait a minute, silly me.

It is proven that our wrestlers develope more here than anywhere else thus far.

I don't think and would be nieve to think that all wrestlers would reach their best wrestling selves here, there really is a demand for other ways of coaching. Kids are still kids and not all react the same to different cultures.

Not all coaches would be effective with caels approach either.

Caels approach might be the best but that doesn't mean there's not a better way for a different individual.

Now we have DT coming out of the "Cael coaching tree" instead of the Gable tree (i.e. Brands, TanTom, etc). We'll see if it's the system or just Cael himself that is the difference.

Cael even said in that answer that the key is getting kids that want to be here. I think that bears more meaning than most would ascribe. Not just “I want to go to the best” (Suriano, Teasdale) but people who understand and gel with the culture at a deeper level.

And the power core of the PSU system is the Triple C’s, not just Cael. Our wrestlers frequently mention Casey and Cody as being critical to their success.

One thing that stood out to me in Beau’s interview the other day was when he said that he most recently has benefited from Casey’s direct and unfiltered coaching style.

I’m more curious about how the team would do if we ever lost Casey or Cody to head coaching jobs elsewhere than how well former PSU wrestlers could duplicate the PSU system as coaches. That Triple C synergy seems unique and pretty special. And I suspect that Cody, as the older brother, has a lot of influence in Cael’s life on and off the mat.

👍, that's why I said thus far. We are not quit sure about him yet, what we are expecting and what happens could be a total 180.

Cael's best line if you start here you can win a title!
