Southern Scuffle - Jan 4 & 5

About 10 years ago when PSU went to the scuffle, I recall teams from Missouri, Cornell, OKY St, and Minny being there.
Yeah, for a few years there (around 10 years ago, as you say), the Scuffle was a legit tournament with some solid squads and a bunch of highly rated guys. In 2025, I think there were a grand total of two top-10 ranked guys. It's become a shell of what it once (briefly) was.

Of course it matters. That’s why we are here. To discuss wrestling and this team. I don’t agree with his position but I’m interested if he feels differently after seeing Cole’s performance
Sorry, not trying to stifle discussion. Just seemed an odd question to seek a singular, specific opinion.

I'm in the camp that Ryder's best weight is 174, though there will be one season (2025-26) of overlap with Haines. But if 184 is open next season, Ryder will likely be the guy.
The issue with Ryder at 174 is a numbers issue. If he’s 174, Barr comes back down to 184 to make room for the Mirasolas, and Duke moves into 165 when MM leaves, that leaves one spot at 174 between Sealey and Ryder, who are both world class top 5 PFP recruits, and the spot doesn’t open until after Haines graduates after next season. That’s just brutal (and even doesn’t factor in Henckel OR Asher).

I just read over on Turks board that only PSU "high" recruits were doing well at the Scuffle.

Pierce listed as being a Kaleb Young - Murin level recruit for us. Despite not being ranked in the top 250 (Murin in the 30s, Young in the 20s).

Alternative reality...
GIA guys brag about how they develop recruits and then post their projected line-up for the next season and it’s full of AAs from other teams.

It’s simple. Cael needs to establish new weights and force them on the wrestling world.😉

If the Hawks had to rely on recruiting and development they would annually still be the April champions, but by every next March probably 9th or 10th place. Every year. They need to be very thankful they have a slumlord who isn't bashful about walking through different schools' wrestling rooms giving away millions of dollars to recruit a 4 or 5 wrestlers capable of placing in the top 6 just to move up 5 or 6 spots to get a 4th place trophy.

I am definitely impressed. We can't ask more of him at that size. Plus, I have been wrong before, and will be again in the future. Am I convinced with another year and maybe 15-20 more lbs of good weight, can Cole AA? In all honesty, not yet, but he is certainly starting to look the part.

The next year will be very interesting. Cole's biggest initial competition next year still might prove to be his brother.

Someone very good will be on the bench. I think there is an equal case to be made that it will be Ryder at 174 behind Levi, as I think that is his better weight and going up to 184 he will be small.

Then again if Barr can't or won't come back down to 184, I will stick by my assertion that even after another year of development, Barr beats Conner for 197, and if so, Conner might choose to go up. We should know by the summer.

I will agree with most of you that what makes the most sense on paper, giving us the strongest lineup is:

174 Levi (Ryder sits burning a year of eligibility)
184 Barr (comes back down)
197 Conner
Hwt Cole

Would I completely rule out?:

174 Levi
184 Ryder (goes up)
197 Barr (stays and beats Conner)
Hwt Cole or Conner (Cole sits)

No, I can't. I don't see how the later isn't maybe a 40/60 possibility.

The reality is we have 5 studs for 4 slots, and Cole on balance is probably the weakest of the 5 given an honest assessment.

Ultimately, It all comes down to what Josh decides to do. If the drop is easy, he probably will. If he finishes top 3 this year (I think he will), the decision to drop isn't a slam dunk.

With the younger guys, I often feel that their leg size doesn’t match the upper body. With Cole, I thought I saw the opposite. And I thought that might bode well for someone wanting to gain good weight.

For the record, they mostly sent backups too.

IIRC in the old days ya anyway, there was a total number of “scoring wrestlers” that teams could count towards the team score here. @RoarLions1 would remember the specifics. Maybe 12? Or maybe just 10.
I found an old thread from 2018 that discusses this. A team could pre-designate up to fifteen scorers if they brought 15 or more wrestlers. At the end of the tournament, the team's highest scoring wrestler at each weight would be the team points used to determine the final team total.

This probably does not belong here, but I will throw it up anyway. I have been seeing numerous AI-generated Facebook posts with the theme of OSU being the favorite for some of the high-end high school wrestlers. There are always little details that stand out as fake.

Anyhow, the following is a post I just saw on Facebook about the SS. Are schools employing AI bots for team propaganda?

"The 2025 Southern Scuffle Tournament at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, kicked off with a whirlwind of upsets, setting the stage for a dramatic showdown on the horizon. As teams geared up for the semifinals, a surprising shift in rankings turned heads—most notably, the once-unstoppable Penn State Nittany Lions, who found themselves not at the top but struggling to hold on to their No. 2 spot. What was supposed to be another dominant performance for the Lions became a tale of missed opportunities, injuries, and a shifting balance of power, as the Oklahoma State Cowboys surged to the forefront with a commanding victory against the Air Force Falcons. For the Nittany Lions, the absence of key wrestlers—like the injured Carter Starocci—left a void that proved difficult to fill, and suddenly, they were left watching from the sidelines as OSU not only overtook them in the standings but also dominated in terms of individual qualifiers.

It’s not often that a team with such depth as Penn State gets knocked down, especially with a lineup that includes rising stars like Zack Ryder and the Mirasola twins. But Day 1 of the Southern Scuffle revealed just how quickly things can turn in this highly competitive arena. With Ryder’s impressive freshman performance and the Mirasola brothers continuing to shine, the Nittany Lions still had hope—but their road to redemption is far from guaranteed. While their semifinal chances rest on these up-and-coming athletes, the ghosts of absent stars like Starocci loom large. As the Cowboys hold the top spot heading into the next round, and with the rivalry between Penn State and Oklahoma State more heated than ever, the question on everyone’s mind is: Can Cael Sanderson’s legacy of success keep the Nittany Lions in the hunt, or will David Taylor’s Cowboys prove too much to overcome without their biggest names on the mat?"

Given that now JUCO transfers do not count against eligibility, should we get a JUCO wrestling team started, have the team wrestle a D1 schedule as permitted?
Send em to SE MN. Non-Scholly JUCO. We can pay 'em through royalties of a true "Last Chance U" on Netflix.

And soon AI will be doing our jobs for us. Yay.

That's about as good as the "articles" I get about my fantasy sports teams every week.

FIFY.

The posts I have seen typically include Jax or Bassett. I have definitely clicked on their respective threads here more than the bot threads on Facebook.

I thought Fairy Tales were supposed to start with "Once Upon a Time"

How would you like to be Conner and Cole's dad going into work tomorrow!

I'd park in the CEO's spot, use the Executive restroom, get first in line at the lunch room, and play Flo's 197 and HWT finals over and over in a loop.

Then around 2:00pm I'd take the call from Cael leave the office, leaving my hot secretary to screen all the NIL offers coming in!

Turk is just figuring in the PSU "In the room" bump. Simple.....raise the PSU ranking by 220 places :)

I think you could have 15 potential scoring wrestlers, but only
