Southern Scuffle - Jan 4 & 5

149 pounds Final: #4 Connor Pierce VS #2 Jordan Williams (Little Rock)

Period 1:
I put away my groceries now too & I'm ready to roll! Jordan Williams is ranked 16th by Flo. There's an intense heavy metal guitar solo between matches. That'll get everyone going! Only Nick & Casey in the corner. I haven't seen Cael or Cody all day. Here we go! Circling & head tapping & some tie-ups. A couple half shots, but not much more. Williams works a 2 on 1 & Pierce reaches down & grabs a leg. Williams is trying to fight it off. He gets a whizzer & then kicks free. Pierce drops right back in on a leg & they go out of bounds, restart, 1:05 left. Circling & Pierce coming forward. Williams shoots & gets a leg. Pierce gets a whizzer in, and then tries to kick free, but Williams hangs on to the leg. Williams gets to his feet, elevates the leg & trips Pierce to the mat for the TD, 3-0, then rides out the final few seconds. 3-0 Williams

Period 2:
Pierce takes down. He gets to his feet, but Williams trips him back to the mat. Pierce gets to his feet again & gets the escape, 3-1. Williams with +36-sec riding time. Pierce is pushing forward a little, tying up & breaking, 1-min left. Williams starts backing up oddly & then falls to the mat & the ref blows it dead, restart. I'm not sure what that was. Back to action immediately, so no injury time. Tying up, Pierce is pushing forward a little, then Williams circles back to center. Williams shoots & gets a leg. Pierce is trying to fight it off, but Williams finishes off the TD & rides out the rest of the period. 6-1 Williams

Period 3:
Williams takes down & gets a quick escape, 7-1. Pierce gets in deep on a double, but Williams fights him off & they're back to neutral. That was demoralizing. Pierce throws in an underhook. Williams hits a duck, but nobody scores. Williams shoots again & gets another TD, 10-1. Stoppage & restart, 1:04 left. Pierce gets to his feet & gets the escape, 10-2. Pierce comes forward, but he can't find an opening, 30-sec left. Pierce gets in on a leg, elevates it & trips Williams to the mat for a TD, 10-5. Pierce rides out the period.

Jordan Williams DEC Connor Pierce 10-5

Connor Pierce takes 2nd Place!

He won his soph and senior years, 3rd his junior.
His RSF year, Dean Phinney wrestled Unl for Iowa and placed 3rd, but Lou was eligible to wrestle. Lou's twin brother Ed won gold at 177 that year.

Your point is correct though, Lou was a very strong small heavyweight and was very dominant in a field of literal giants.

Lou came up to my section one year at nationals looking for Coach Lorenzo. We ended up talking for half an hour. It was a cool visit. The reason he was looking for Lorenzo was he heard Rich didn't get a ticket down below so he came up to switch seats with him. Somebody had already taken care of the typical PSU screwup and Lorenzo was sitting in the lower bowl, but very thoughtful of Lou.
The Banach Brothers story is truly a great history of overcoming human setbacks. For those not familiar research their life .

Stoddard was on the national team wasn't he?
He was on the U23 team. He won 125kg gold at Pan Am championships, but the rest of the team won gold too, so not the stiffest competition.

Stoddard made it to the semis of the U23 World Championships, but then lost to Masoumi from Iran. He fought back to the Bronze match, but then lost to Kurbanov from AIN.

Lots of free time between matches. They're really dragging this out.

I had no idea.......truly an amazing story! Never knew they had so many siblings and especially appreciated Steve's story. Got a glimpse of his story before the Soldiers Salute Tourney but enjoyed reading it in more detail here. I attended the Iowa 28 Day Intensive Camp in the late 70's and got to meet (and get pushed by 😛) Ed and Lou. That was before there great achievements.
