Spencer Lee forfeiting out the rest of the tourney.

I would have liked to have seen Spencer come out today, register two first period falls, and take 3rd.

I think it would have been great for the sport to see him step on the podium after doing so and allow the adulation take place. It would have been a truly special moment.

But if he can’t go, then he can’t go.

I just think it would have been a great way to go out. Even better than winning four titles in some ways.
My opinion:

Does anyone actually believe that he isn't wrestling because of an injury? Had he not been turned and pinned at the end of his match yesterday, does anyone believe he wouldn't be out there tonight? I certainly don't. I actually feel bad for him but I am not surprised he made that decision. I am sorry that he can't find the stength of charachter to go on the mat today and finish his career as the true champion that he has been. He will always have to live with the fact he lost his last collegiate match. Personally I think that says something about his charachter. He doesn't owe anything to anybody but himself. I just think that someday in the future he is going to regret not trying to finish as the champion that he has been.

Everyone that competes in the sport as family, friends, those that Walter, and those people really want to Luanne. When they lose, they feel the pain is their friend family member. He is no more better or special to anyone else and I don't care that he's going Straight tile. Be a lot of guys on the way home some dreams, and they had to learn to deal with it.
As for fans, Busting balls that's not usually my style, but peoples done it to me and people continue to do it forever. If you can't handle that part get a different hobby.

How did you react when Bubba stuck David? And that wasn't nearly as crushing as losing your opportunity to become a four timer.

We are supposed to be the place that strives for success with honor! This should be especially true when we have been so blessed to have Cael choose PSU and bring this kind of domination. I just think the our fans should have the same humility as our team and just be grateful.
I don’t go over there and post. But I don’t think it’s the end of the world if fans do. After all, it’s only wrestling.

This whole thing is a complete mismanagement. They brought him back to win the NCAA team title under clearly negative circumstances with the injuries. Brands publically came out this season and proclaimed he's the greatest ever before the job was done. What good comes from that? Brands hang on by a thread with him.

The Brands should slobber their praise on Spencer.

Unfortunately, history will likely show that Spencer sacrificed his international career to help Iowa and the brothers become relevant again.

I thought he should have moved on after double knee surgery, but for whatever reason, he did not.

They did get 1 team championship ... at least that's something.

it makes me sick that someone of you (and some may be posters in other forums from Penn state), would even go over to the board and instigate is beyond me and it not only makes yourself look like an asshole but it makes the Penn state fan base and those that actually do root for a guy like Spencer to achieve greatness look like shit as well. It’s quite despicable that some of you feel the need to lower yourself to the same iowa faithful that refers to us as ped state and root for the demise of an individual. The beauty of wrestling and why i love it is because it is one vs one (no one else for help, no one else to hide behind) and those that wrestle win and lose with grace. Do emotions get high and get shown from time to time sure (see Nelson brands extracurriculars vs starocci JUST AS YOU should see staroccis extracurriculars vs Washington)

We get a decent crop of iowa guys that provide insight to our board and don’t ruin it. No one should have to tell a group of adults that if you got nothing good to say then don’t say it at all.

With that said, don’t embarrass our school and do not embarrass what we embody as Penn Staters. Take the damn high road

He did have a large leg wrap on again. Mekhi Lewis looks like he got hit by a car and he's fighting through it.

I was so hyped at the turn of events during the match and even though Ramos had the lead secured because of back swipes, the fall came with :02 seconds left on the clock. So close to the end.
I for one admire the kid and what he was able to accomplish. On top of that, he has bigger goals in the sport and it doesn't make sense with the knees issues to risk an injury to place 3rd. Ironic that he will be forever linked to Dan Gable's conclusion, which really sucks for what he has accomplished.
And no, it wasn't because he couldn't get to the arena on time because he took mom to Crystal Vision Center! oops! lol

l know it is a dream and goal and countless sweat and tears went into it. But ya know, Cael seems to put importance on that as well as life. I sense the kid is hurting and think he hasn't even been able to practice. I think he should finish out the season as this means it was championship or bust. As a parent, I always told other parents to enjoy themselves as the kids get to have their own fun. You're at the Natty champs and don't stick around and watch? That's another perspective. Spencer has been a warrior and leaves a legacy going way back. I am being selfish when I say he should wrestle today. I say that because everything is speculation unless you're talking to Spencer personally.

Is he really that injured?

I hate it for the Iowa guys that won in the wrestlebacks, "for Spencer Lee" according to Tom Brands, that he could not go out and wrestle for them today like they did for him last night. He is much bigger than the team though and his hurt feelings are what matters. He will be a great coach at Iowa someday.

I don’t know if he’s too injured to go or not. I think going out there and wrestling today could have been the shining example of how to handle a loss. But I’ve never been in his shoes. I also can’t pretend to know what is going on.

An all time upset occurred for our biggest rival, after their savior chose Iowa and made it clear he wanted to unseat his home state’s program. For 3+ years we’ve heard how great he is and look out world team next. If I cannot enjoy that stunning result, and celebrate on a PSU fan board, then what’s the point of being a fan here? Doesn’t mean I do not respect his accomplishments. I do however agree that going to their board to rub their faces in it is not appropriate.

I disagree, he also owes something to his team.

Will he? What’s the message? How to treat your teammates in a competition? Fighting thru the backside? Idk.

This is a sad sad situation. He will regret it internally if not openly. He used regrettable words winning last year.

How about the leadership around him. I’d say parents but he’s an adult.

It’s also sad that this was predictable. Losing is a part of life. Everyone has to deal with it.

Another unsolicited opinion post. Here is my take on Spencer.
Ayala’s mom seems to be vindicated for her take on “selfish Spencer”. If Spencer won last night he’d be wrestling today. So it has the appearance that he’s good enough to wrestle for an individual title but not a team trophy. I still see Kemmer and Eirman in pain and wrapped up in all their joints wrestling for their team in the wrestler backs. But apparently Spencer is above that. All of those kids on his team deserve to have him out there wrestling back for them. And I agree he’s probably hurt but if you are good enough to wrestle for 1st then you are good enough to wrestle back for 3rd. I’ve always been a Spencer fan but I am out on him after this and I’m sad for his teammates that deserve better. This is a terrible look for Spencer and for Iowa. “Excuses are for Wusses”!

Please tell me in what ways would have been better than 4 titles?

The example it would set. His legacy would have been I didn’t achieve my goal, suffered a devastating loss my senior year in the semifinals, but came out the next morning and wrestled for the next best thing. Be like me when you fall short of your ultimate goals.

Sorry, I thought the sarcasm was dripping enough not to need an emoji.

I get it, he’s crushed and it hurts but I truly feel it would have been better for him mentally to show up today, the crowd would have given him a huge standing O, and he could have did his thing 2 more times.

Him not showing up today tells me the kid is in a dark, dark place.
Guys, I believe Spencer is truly injured. I don’t think he should have wrestled this year. Sure he is in a dark place like scores of others. As far as spiking the ball on HR I’m banned so wasn’t me. As mentioned before I recall the Iowa reaction when DT got pinned, however, doing what they did is joining their cesspool.

ah. sorry. I just missed it among the supportive posts. There is nothing good about this. He may have his own demons, and that's bad. I find this insulting to those who fight hard for medals. You don't have to be happy about not being the champ but you wrestle.... That's what wrestling is. Meanwhile Griffith, Dean, Lewis are like "hold my beer" Can't imagine their bodies are in tip top shape. How about Fix? 3 times he sniffed it and won't even wrestle tonight....but here he is this morning fighting back.

There is no enjoyment in my position. It's sadness for the message that was just sent by the FF

Contrast Lee with Max Dean. Max lost a disappointing match and then did his best in the rest of the tourney. Dean has character fostered by Cael. Lee is a self-centered crybaby mentored by Brands. If Lee would have chosen to stay local and wrestle for Cael he would likely be a 4X national champ and would be healthy and happy.

Doesn’t his MFF impact Iowa in the team race? Dark place or not, you have to show up for your teammates, come on man.

This is one tournament where I am glad that I got banned from the Iowa boards. It is ironic that part of the reason that I got banned was for throwing shade back at them for their booing of our football players for "faking injuries" and the subsequent crap they spewed on our boards for a week. I guess stuff really does happen for a reason.

Sorry. Couldn’t hear you since you were so high up on your soapbox. I guess this is your first time on the internet, fans talk smack to each other constantly. Sandusky comments don’t bother me so busting on their GOAT shouldn’t bother them. If you truly are embarrassed or hurt over what some stranger says on a forum, then you should probably stay off them.

Thinking of all the wrestlers that MFF out of last year's Championship. Kerk did it too. But PSU already had championship. Or he would of went.

I understand Lee is tired, beat up and sore with pain. But team placement is on the line. Gut it out, last chance. I'd bet he would be giving a standing O if he wrestled.

Tim Johnson on the ESPN broadcast this morning took the Spencer is injured/recovering from injuries angle. Interesting to hear him say that injuries "also denied Spencer the opportunity to be a 4-time state champ."

Austin Desanto couldn't be reached for comment.
