Spencer Lee

I can’t decide where to rank Spencer all-time. And keep in mind he needs to win it again first. But what do you do with him not winning his first two Big Ten tournaments? And the five losses? Would VJ have been the best PSU wrestler ever had he beaten Lewis in 2019 and won it when Covid canceled 2020? I think even with four NCAA titles, we would have put VJ behind a number of PSU two and three timers.

If he wins it all and ends up second all-time in NCAA tournament points, I’ll be willing to call him the 2nd or 3rd best NCAA tournament wrestler ever, behind Cael and possible behind Dake (whose standing in my rankings have increased dramatically.). But overall all-time? I’m just not ready to put him in the top 3. Maybe with time, I will, like how I’ve come around on Dake.
it is your ranking and you can put him where you want. I personally have Dake as number 1 (no matter how much i dislike him) . I just focus more on the wins as opposed to the losses and who Dake beat to win the 4 I find impressive. I haven't thought about where Lee goes but his most impressive tournament was the year he beat both Suriano and Nato.

Going 0-fer in the Midlands doesn’t look good either.

What were Owings' credentials prior to beating Gable, that this year's field should be compared to?
You tell me. I was just curious who he thought would be the guy to knock Spencer off this year.

First, it’s not a terrible thing to be “only” in the top 10 NCAA wrestlers ever, and not #1 or in the top 3. My top 3 ever are Cael, Hodge, and Gable, and he didn’t supplant any of them. Regardless, 4 NCAAs and likely 3 Hodges is impressive, so he (& Yianni) will be in the next group you talk about with Dake, Steiber, etc.

It took me a while to give Dake credit for his accomplishments. I was sour appleing him up until Taylor changed weights.😱

That bold promise has been lost in the mist of time

There's five on a basketball court, no one can deliver a championship (let alone two)

There's nine on a baseball dial court, no one can deliver a championship (let alone two).

There's ten on a college wrestling team....

Dumber than making such a promise was anybody that bought it.

I still say whether he gets four or not; DT, Zain, Nolf and Bo were better.

Nolf was so good he made the name of an opponent "a thing".

You know this the kind of thing right there....

That makes me glad I stumbled onto this board a couple years ago.

There are always idiot fans who can’t stand losing so they deflect and make accusations against the team they can rarely beat. This is exactly why I post over here more than GIA. Almost every thread over there turns into shit because too many posters think by referencing Sandusky or PED’s or slush funds that it will somehow diminish the accomplishments of what Penn St has done over the last decade+. To me, it’s a losers mentality and it gets old real fast. Anyway, excited to watch the tourney starting tomorrow. Hoping for the best for the Hawks and good health for everyone.
I like Lee and I'm sure he would have done very well at PSU. He obviously clicked with Brands, so good for them both .

don't forget we are only 'fans'..... not really 'our' team,, just the team we root for.... wish more folks realized that...

Nothing against Spencer Lee. But I feel the same way about him I feel about Carter. If you have to talk about yourself or make a big deal out of something regarding you or your decisions then you are compensating. Shut up and let your wrestling do the talking. Bo occasionally got a little overzealous for my liking. I like the Zain, Nolf, Brooks, Dean, type of guys that quietly rip your soul out on the mat. I look at it a little like guys trying to date my daughters. Don't tell me how wonderful you are show me how wonderful you think she is by how you act. Lee is great and I won't bet against him. I won't ever wish an injury on a competitor. Just realize at the end of the day how lucky you are to get to play a game and be grateful for the opportunity to chase a dream.
to each their own but I always thought the 'class' was to act like you have been there before...

Where do you rank Gable Steveson on the All-time? Only two losses his whole career both during his freshman year and both to Anthony Cassar by 1 point in both matches. That was the worst two matches of his career! There were no five losses and definitely never close to being pinned like Spencer was. To me Gable has to be ranked higher than Spencer.

Yes but zero ACLs but also excuses are for wusses.

Look at that! Big Tens and Midlands matter again 😂
They do when people are calling you the goat and you have losses there. 5 losses and being decked absolutely put him behind others including Nolf in my mind. We’ve discussed this so many times though I’m not going to get into all the stats again. He’s great just nowhere near the goat

If I am PSU, I'm not trading 4 Team Championships for one 4 time Individual Champion. It would have been nice to land Spencer but they didn't need him.
In the grand scheme it has to be better for the sport that Spencer Lee didn't come to PSU, right? And not just from a fan perspective (to give others a title contender to cheer for).

I can only imagine what corrective measures the NCAA might have felt compelled to attempt to address that level of inequality and embarrassment of riches if we also had a vice grip on the 125 lb title each year Spencer wrestled.

The vast majority of Hawkeye wrestling fans know exactly who the GOAT is. A few of the fan boys mention Spencer and now the Hawkeye fan base is guilty by association. Par for the course

I hope somebody else found something interesting in the article. I think it's clear that Terry's style appealed to Spencer and that was a big factor in his decision. The guy has a chance to be only the 5th (possibly tied for 5th?) Four timer ever. That deserves the attention it's getting.

We have two, maybe three four-time champions on our team right now. Yes, spencer would have been nice to as not getting him would've provided a death knell to Iowa's program under TnT. Ultimately, he picked a school that has developed lightweights better than anyone in the last 20 years.

Had we landed spencer, we would've taken down the point record in 2018 when suriano stayed, in this alternate reality.

125 spencer 27
133 Suriano 18
141 lee 11.5
149 zain 25
157 nolf 23
165 joseph 21
174 hall 20.5
184 nickal 23
197 rasheed 9.5
285 Nevills 8.5

183.5. damn.

Cael #1 , Dake #2 for me. Dake's four titles at four different wieghts is wild, and the guys he beat, especially beating David Taylor when no other folkstyle wrestler on planet earth could come close to him, and who a decade later is a top three P4P wrestler in the world, puts him number 2 for me.

So you have Nolf, Nickal and Retherford all ahead of Taylor?

Yeah where is the groundswell of "spencer is the GOAT" thing coming from? I don't see that at all, even on HR. Most are putting him at 3 or 4 with Steiber.

This feels like a classic case of "making up a guy in my head to get mad about on the internet."

You guys are addicted to being mad at Iowa lol
Actually for the most part I just don’t care about Iowa good or bad. Granted, I’m not a PSU alum so the hatred isn’t in me like many here but you saying you don’t see people calling Spencer the goat is just disingenuous. You are honest about Iowa usually but not on this take. It’s coming FROM the team which obviously trickles down to the fans. I don’t go over to HR much but any Spencer thread I click on people are absolutely saying he is the best ever

I'm just going to say it: This is maybe the 3rd or 4th (or maybe more) article/interview Spencer has done to remind everyone he picked Iowa over PSU as a PA boy and Terry Brands was why. Good for you, it was what your heart wanted and you followed it but it's pretty obvious at this point he realizes him going there is the biggest win Iowa recorded over PSU essentially the last decade and wants to spike the ball.
I've noticed he seems bitter this year with a bit of an attitude. I don't get the PA stuff. I'll always root for him.
