Spencer Lee

Nice win for sure. I am jealous he had his career in an Iowa singlet and I'm also glad it's over in 4 days lol. I'm glad we limited the damage as the title count during his time at Iowa is 1-3 (and hopefully 1-4 in a few days but I don't like to jinx things)
Kind of echo this.

Would have loved to have gotten him. No doubt about it. But if someone said, "You can get him, or you can not get him and still win 4 of the next 5 titles", I am taking the latter for sure. I think Iowa fans/coaches would have as well.

It's kind of funny that you brought that up. I was trading messages yesterday with a friend who was with me at Northwestern when Owings beat Gable in the finals. My friend made a comment that he was wondering if we would see someone pull a Larry Owings on Lee in the NCAA finals in Tulsa, but he really couldn't imagine seeing that happen. I replied that when Gable lost to Owings, nobody imagined seeing that happen either until it happened!
Don't know where I read it (maybe on this site), but there were only 2 people in the arena that night who thought Owings had a chance: Gable and Owings.

You guys are addicted to being mad at Iowa lol

As far as Spencer goes, if he wins again this weekend, I hope he does it by putting on a real show - all pins or TF in his matches. There are a lot of people in the crowd who are fairly neutral regarding the Iowa vs Penn State rivalry and they would probably just prefer to see some outstanding wrestling from everyone on both teams.

However, if Spencer has anyone to worry about in his bracket, I think his biggest concern is the #1 seed at 125 - himself. I read some comments both by and about Gable losing to Owings and it seems like a lot of it had to do with Gable's own mental state going into the finals that night. I'm sure winning a 4th national title is a really big deal to Lee and he'll have to keep his focus going into Saturday's match. I wouldn't be surprised if he and Gable have had some private discussions about this issue at some point.

I think Owings said that in an interview. However, he was wrong too. I was there with 4 other guys and all of us felt that Owings had a good chance to win. Like Gable, he pinned everyone in his bracket going into the finals match. I wonder how many times that has happened where both finalists have pinned their way to the finals.

In the grand scheme it has to be better for the sport that Spencer Lee didn't come to PSU, right? And not just from a fan perspective (to give others a title contender to cheer for).

I can only imagine what corrective measures the NCAA might have felt compelled to attempt to address that level of inequality and embarrassment of riches if we also had a vice grip on the 125 lb title each year Spencer wrestled.
We should have had Suriano at 125 who if he stayed I think would have been at least a 3 time NCAA Champ under Cael and Cody! What could have been?????

The PSU Lee probably isn’t famous for “coining the phrase” Excuses are for wusses, because Cael has other guys wrestling in the finals and can’t follow him to his interview whispering in his ear, “Tell them”. Tom had plenty of time
Spencer's match that year was the last one, there weren't any other guys wrestling in the finals, for any team

First or last wouldn’t matter as Cael doesn’t tell his wrestlers what to say.
That's fair, just a far cry from "Cael wouldn't have time to say anything because he would instead be preparing for some imaginary matches later in the night"

The whole thing is imaginary. You notice guys saying if he came to PSU? That’s a far cry from what really happened. Point was Cael having 2,3,4,5 champs a year and when TnT have one it’s a thing where interviews and coaches being thrown are important. It was pretend, like the hawk 2020 title.

I've read a bunch about the Owings-Gable match. Owing was nuts! Didn't he drop like THREE weight classes just to try and beat Gable?

The ESPN feed did not show spencer after the match last night. Did he get up and shake hands ?

Ever see the movie Vision Quest? It was Owings feat in 1970 that inspired the story line.

I believe he shook Ramos’s hand and turned and walked off the mat with Tom at his side.

Honestly I think that was about as gracious and well-put-together as he could have been after a loss of that magnitude. I feel like it would not have been unsurprising to see him just collapse on the mat in devastation, but I have to think he wanted nothing more than to disappear at that very moment.

He did. The video of the match without commentary shows some different angles. Saw that video posted somewhere. Twitter I think. I think it’s the individual mat feed from ESPN+. Similar to the one on YouTube of RBY-DeSanto semi last year. Just the match. No commentary.

Just announced that Spencer is gonna MFF out. Yikes. Gonna be a tough day for him.
If true that mathematically clinches it for us. By my math Iowa would lose 9 points off their max potential and they could do no better than tie us.

He had about 25 seconds to compose himself when he was counting the lights.

People here have a weird infatuation with the hand shake.

A hint: the very few times it doesn't occur, the ref makes it happen.

If you didn't see the ref grab Lee's arm and make him shake, then Lee did it on his own. (Same for Martinez.)

So asking a question is a weird infatuation ? ESPN didn't show anything. Spencer's last high school match he sat on his ass at the end of the match.. The crowd got loud. All I was doing was seeking clarification of how it ended. Don't try and put me down for asking a question. Gee wrestlers normally shake hands. Thanks I never knew that.
