I will preface this by saying I have no idea what the situation is and this is simply my observation after the point was brought to my attention by a buddy. Something seemed off with Spencer at the end of his finals match...I watched in real time and thought something was amiss. He winces a bit and seems to limp...he looks at the corner and shakes his head and says something to the coaches just before taking his ankle bands off. He then says something to his coach and I'm no expert lip reader, but it looks like he says "I blew my knee out..." He then didn't appear to be his normal self in the interview...you almost always see a smile from Spencer in those interviews.

I do hope he is not injured as he is such a hammer and I enjoy watching him take apart his opponent. Any wrestling fan no matter who your allegiance is to can appreciate Spencer's dominance. He is likely good enough to win nationals on a bum knee (the same way Nolf did), but doing so would be a significantly tougher challenge than if he were not injured.

Again, just posting my observation which admittedly could be completely wrong. There is a thread on this on themat.com so it's not a completely outlandish observation.

There is a thread on this subject on HR. All we can do is hope that it is not true, and he is set to go in St Louis and Fort Worth in April. It would be a devastating loss for the sport of wrestling in 2021. But if he has a problem, I'm sure he will be back to wreak havoc in the lightweight division. 🙏

If he blew his knee it just means all 5 NCAA matches will be done in 3 minutes or less.

The trials would be different.

Hope the kid is OK.

Yeah...this was my initial reaction. I don't think it would really matter. He could probably win it in a full leg cast.

If there is any thruth to this, he with throw a brace on and destroy everyone in his path.

There is no Suriano or Fix to go against. I think an 80% Spencer won't even be challenged by this field.

He had his permanently attached knee brace on, are you talking bout his OTHER knee?

Someone on TheMat I think caught it. It appears to happen at around 4:40 in the video I saw (I’ll try and attach soon) when DS escapes. DS bucks back and Spencer’s left leg (without the brace) gets totally caught under him. Looked nasty. He wasn’t really impacted, but the match ends and you see something us up - he was limping on that unbraced leg as he went into the tunnel

Yeah but you're forgetting Tom won't wrestle an injured athlete. I've listened to Iowa fans long enough to know their coaching staff will sit him instead of being like Cael and risking further injury to his boy. Of course I guess it is possible they are wrong and like Cael, Brands only cares about winning. In that case, he would be out there and Hawk fans will look like idiots yet again.

4:44 in this vid - they cut the jog off and then limp once he started walking around a event worker that you’d see in the longer vid on TheMat. He clearly gets the left (unbraced) knee caught under him. Good that he could continue, but definitely tweaked something at the very least (not a dr, but I’ve had 3 knee operations)

I didn't see life flight or a back board so he's good to go.

However, this may cause pause relative to conversations tied to Olympics qualifying.

Interesting. Then at 5:50 at the end of first period when he stands up he takes a weird hop then looks down then back at his corner.

Agree with the consensus. If something is up, shouldn't really impact his performance at NCAA's, but could definitely impact him for trials.

It looks like he is bothered for certain, but it is probably just a tweak and no big deal. You have tweaks in wrestling constantly, but once you have had a big injury it makes you worried every time something happens. I agree Lee will mop the field at NCAA no matter, but we want him on all cylinders for team USA!

Life can be short so I hope he can go to the NCAAs as well as a shot at the Olympics... Meaning he better be at trials!!!

Spencer looked like Spencer right after the "incident" in question. On the mat he had good movement, was able to push off, etc. Surely anything significant would have resulted in more obvious signs. Speculating about injuries is dangerous, as no one knows until after the medical community does their thing.

Generally agree. Compare that to Sparks injury where you immediately knew he was in trouble just from his reactions

What was up with the stick leg 133 (Mich state?). He went down like he broke his damn femur, crying out, holding leg up etc. trainer came out, rubbed some magic potion on and he was up within 90 seconds.

You sometimes don't know until the next morning - or at least that was my experience. I did a major injury to my knee in a match my senior year of high school - damaged pretty much everything. I finished the match in which it occurred without much impact. Next morning, I couldn't walk.

I would love to know what Lee's grip strength is. It must be off the charts for his age, size and BMI. And it must rank up there with one of his best assets as a wrestler. He doesn't seem that physically daunting or even technically superior all the time. However, he has several go-to moves in neutral and on top that almost always work and most of them seem to originate with his grip strength and hand control.

Grip strength is pretty quick and easy to measure on the spot. I had my done after a hand injury. A reporter could ask Lee if he is willing to do it after NCAA finals. Might a be fun and interesting question.

Since he went gif mode, I actually really really like Madden now.

I just recently saw a documentary on Spencer (Flo ?). In HS, last year he got hurt, was going for 4 in a row. He demanded to wrestle. His point is he did not want to not try, as it would haunt him. Still, there is a point of no go. I suspect Spencer will want to wrestle no matter what. He seems committed to Iowa. Very loyal. Good luck!

They were discussing it on the Flo podcast as well.
