With all the talk about tri-tip, I'm delaying a trip to the upper midwest and going back to California.
Stanford has a lot of great non-revenue sports programs. They should be better at wrestling than what they are currently. They did have a nice recruiting class this year so hopefully they are on the rise.
Also, I've begun to add high school information to the previews. This ties into the Illinois thread because Stanford has poached a few wrestlers out of Illinois.
125 – Townsell (Jr) <Oak Park, IL>
Two-time qualifier (1-2 in 2018, 2-2 in 2017) Gabe Townsell had a 20-15 record last season. He started the season @133 and moved back down to 125 after Connor Schram’s season ended due to injury.
133 – Pengilly (Sr) <Porterville, CA>
After Townsell went down to 125, Anthony Le went 1-4 @133 and was replaced with Mason Pengilly who won matches in the last 3 duals of the season (including beating Jason Renteria) and upset Sean Nickell in the Pac 12 tournament to grab an allocation to the NCAA with a 4-1 season record at that time. He then went 0-2 in the tournament including a tight 2-1 loss to Pletcher in the 1st round. Making the tournament with just 5 matches – you don’t see that much.
141 – Woods (Fr) <Montini Catholic, IL>
Real Woods is one of several highly ranked recruits coming to Stanford this year (their draft class was rated #7 by Flo). He is a 3-time Illinois state champion (most recently @132 – 3A). Woods is taking over for Isaiah Locsin who went 18-11 last season and didn’t qualify for the tournament.
149 – van der Merwe (So) <Blair Academy, NJ>
Requir van der Merwe went 9-3 as the starter at the beginning of last year. Jack Barry (So) finished the year as the starter and went 7-19 overall and didn’t qualify for the tournament.
157 – Fox (Sr) <Gilroy, CA>
Two-time qualifier and one-time AA (R12 in 2018 and 7th place in 2017 – unseeded both years) returns for his final season. He had a 23-9 record last season.
165 – Hill (So) <Clovis, CA> or Dallavia (So) <Blair Academy, NJ>
Jared Hill and Brandon Dallavia split starts last year with Hill representing Stanford at the Pac-12 tournament. Hill went 7-13 on the season and Dallavia went 10-13. Incoming freshman Alex Escudero (Los Gatos, CA) may also be in contention here.
174 – Griffith (Fr) <Bergen Catholic, NJ>
Another highly ranked recruit, incoming freshman Shane Griffith (a 2-time New Jersey state champion) will most likely get the start here. He’s taking over for 3-time qualifier Keaton Subjek (1-2 in 2018, 0-2 @165 in 2017, 1-2 @174 in 2016).
184 – Harlan (Fr) <Oakdale, CA> or Flores (Jr) <Clovis North, CA>
Austin Flores went 8-18 as the starter last year. Incoming freshman, Colbey Harlan (a two-time CIF runner-up), could also be in the mix.
197 – Traxler (So) <Marmion Academy, IL>
Nathan Traxler had a 19-12 season record and qualified for the tournament (going 2-2) in his first year as the starter.
Heavy – Rasmussen (Jr) <Crook County, Or>
Trevor Rasmussen went 9-9 last year. He will be taking over as the starter for 4-time qualifier Nathan Butler (2-2 in 2018, 1-2 in 2017, 2-2 in 2016, 1-2 in 2015)
Stanford had no AAs and finished in 34th place with 8.5 points last year. They return 4 qualifiers and lose 2 from last year (also losing Schram to Lehigh) and get a good influx of freshmen talent this year. I see them finishing similarly this year but the future will be brighter if they can keep up the solid recruiting.
Edit: Stanford does compete with Minnesota for goofiest mascot:
