Ah, Pitt-Penn State Round 2. It’s only 44 days away.

Nittany Lions coach James Franklin made headlines Tuesday at Big Ten media days in Chicago when he was asked about playing the Panthers, but responded that he’s focused only on his team’s first game: “It’s Akron, Akron, Akron, Akron, Akron,” he said.

So while Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi was making the rounds on local radio Thursday morning, he ended up talking shop with KDKA NewsRadio’s Larry Richert and John Shumway. Richert mentioned that Shumway was going to ask if Narduzzi had Sept. 9 at Beaver Stadium circled on his calendar, but cautioned his co-host that Narduzzi’s taking things one game at a time.

Indeed, Narduzzi’s response: “It’s Youngstown, Youngstown, Youngstown, Youngstown,” and even through the radio, you could sense the grin it was delivered with, tongue firmly in cheek.

In all honesty, the headline to this story might not be entirely accurate — Narduzzi said just a couple weeks ago at ACC media day in Charlotte that Pitt will be the underdog going into State College, so he kind of did talk about Penn State —but it lines up so nicely with this one. And in his first opportunity to talk Penn State since Franklin’s comments this week, well, Narduzzi opted for one of those replies that help make rivalry games so much fun.

We’re not quite at the level of pregame sniping that took place the day before last year’s long-anticipated rematch, when then-Pitt athletic director Scott Barnes not-so-subtly tweeted about Penn State returning unused tickets, but we’ve still got a long way to go

The two first game situations are not the same.

Sure CJF has to keep the team ready for the thrashing that Akron will receive. Akron doen't have a farts chance in a wind storm.....

But seriously, Duzzie has real worries, as Youngstown does have a legit chance to beat his a$$......
