Suriano interview

OK, thanks for the response, I guess?
I was being flippant to make the point that you somehow managed to repeatedly misspell Cael Sanderson's name. At first I thought you were an Iowa fan deliberately misspelling Cael's name out of disrespect but then I noticed you have 2000 posts here. Anyway, I apologize for drawing attention to it--I strive to not be that guy--because you otherwise made good points.

I understand that wrestling is an individual sport. That being said, Cale has opened my eyes that it is also a team sport. Nick seemed to forget that his individual ability reaches beyond selfish ambition. I don't hold anything against him, he is what he is. I hope he reaches all his goals that he set before himself. What is really clear to me now is how Cale recruits. While it is important to have the drive to be a champion, it is equally important to fit into a team concept. Unfortunately, many great high school wrestling athletes will never have that opportunity and thus not experience the team concept. I think this is where Cale earns his greatness. This was quite evident watching the NCAA's this year. Seeing teammates pulling for each other and watching their reactions. Cale is truly a master craftsman. His awesomeness besides be a great athlete and mentor, is also being a great coach in forming the relationship between individual athleticism and team greatness.

I've made this point before, but I think it bears repeating. I believe David Taylor was the wrestler who most helped Cael bring about the "team" culture. Both by example on the mat (remember how he cranked up his pin ratio at nationals) and off the mat (you could see him leading the team every time I saw a match or tournament in person). He was the superstar who really bought into the message and worked to make it a reality.

I am truly not trying to be a d**k, but just so you know, it is Cael not Cale. I know you don’t mean it this way, but after all the HR people calling him things like Carl and Bael I am sensitive.

Please do not take my message to you the wrong way.

Cael, Casey, Cody. All else is a result, imo. David, and most others bought in...not everyone does.

My phone overrides Cael all the time, had to teach myself to look for it.

However, no spell checker exists that puts an h in Wittlake. That one is entirely on the users. Most of whom are probably old enough to have known or seen Tim Wittman, no h in his name either.

Yep, it was a good interview. But at the same time, I'll root for NS only if him winning helps PSU win a NC, and heck, I'm a Jersey guy. Granted, I'm in way west NJ, only a couple of we'll struck 3-woods from PA. Different world from Paramus, Bergen. But at the same time, I've always been happy to see a Jersey kid commit to PSU, and it was awesome watching Molinaro win a title in Happy Valley. Something just rubs me the wrong way when I listen to NS's narrative.

What rubs you wrong is "me, me, me".

I liken wrestling to gymnastics. There are individual accomplishments and team accomplishments. Ultimately though you are a member of a team and while coaches are happy to have individual champions--they are ultimately judged and paid to produce team championships. Team players are essential to achieve this.
I knew a kid who was extremely good at his sport and by all accounts should've been voted team captain and he desperately wanted it but the team couldn't stand his "me, me, me" attitude and so he never was. It was the sole blemish on an otherwise stellar collegiate career.

Said he knew PSU wasn't the right place for him around time of injury.

This guy talks about "being a man" a lot. Seems like Cael's coachspeak downplaying his injury bruised his ego a bit. The thing is...nobody was questioning his toughness or severity of injury. I think Nick has trouble understanding nuance.

Usually when you have to convince people you took it like a man, chances are you didn't. And there's nothing wrong with that, it's a learning experience for him but all it does it make people think otherwise.

He said it took him to June for the injury to heal. What happened to I was robbed of a NC? PSU didnt handle the injury?

big fish little pond--no doubt in my mind

Well, the B1G already bought the reason and granted the waiver so no need not to be honest now.

And taking it like a man isn’t going back on your agreement and complaining to get a waiver.

True story. I was very upset when my 8th grade girlfriend broke up with me. Want to know how I'm able to drag my sorry ass out of bed every morning? I let it go and moved on. It's high time our fan base does the same with Nick. Living and breathing through the actions of others is sad.

Were you arrested for statutory rape?

As noted there is something not being said. The way he volunteered about not keeping grudges speaks volumes there was some major difference. Not the first time he, in so many words, says you don't need the nice facilities. He does want mma...
Good catch. He appreciates his time at Penn State, yet he talks about not keeping a grudge? Not talking about the request to change because of personal issue to family? Talk about convoluted! o_O

He makes something close to zero sense explaining why he's at Rutgers. Except that it's all about him - even wrestling at Yankee Stadium is "going to be good marketing for me". Oh, well. I really get the impression that he wants to be the focal point of attention for the program which was never happening at Penn State.

I don't get the logic ... he'll be part of the warm up act for a meaningless Rutgers/Maryland football game. It's not even as if he's participating in the first-ever wrestling match at some historic sports venue ... Yankee Stadium is nine years old. He's wrestling in the "House Across the Street from the House that Ruth Built." I'm not sure that distinction is going to help him build his brand. It seems like beating Nato, Spencer Lee or Daton Fix in the national finals to lock down another team title for PSU would have been a better way to launch an MMA career.

No more Yankee Stadium for Nick. . .

That stinks for the wrestlers. I'm sure they were looking forward to that. I'm guessing that they are anticipating a possible World Series game? Cripes, I hope not.

Don't see how the World Series would interfere. Latest game that would be at Yankee Stadium is 10/29. Could be a day later if rained out but no impact on an event on 11/4.

Read a article stating it takes 1 week to prepare Yankee stadium for football and that the Yankee grounds crew would not be able to help.
