Suriano video

Let's face it Nick, Penn State would have been better off if you had never set foot on campus. That is a fact that cannot be argued. The fact that Cael may have been upset that he lost a 125 lb. potential AA that he thought that he would have for three more years is understandable.

Win a title (NCAA or Big Ten) then have a video. You have moved on right?

I hope Lee kicks his butt after Lee beats Tomasello. Actually I hope he loses before then.

I started this thread and I admit I got sucked in by Flo’s sensationalism and based on the trailer it looked like it was gonna be a piss on PSU video.

After watching the full video. I was wrong. The trailer was Flo click bait at its best trying to cause contriversy and it wasn’t controversial at all IMO.

My take is the kid just wasn’t a good fit at PSU. This is a super focused kid as we all know as he was with us. After watching this, I see him as so focused on “him.” It’s all about him and his dreams, his goals and he’s not the “team” type we’re used to here at PSU. Doesn’t make him a bad kid, just different mind set than we accustomed from guys like Zain, Bo, JAson, etc who not only want to win but pull for their teamates even more.

I enjoyed the piece. Nothing negative about PSU. Really a story about a kid that had one goal and the injury really messed him up and had him reavaluting everything.

I wish him the best as NJ is best place for him. Not happy about the hole he left is this year, but in the end, I’d rather have guys that want to be here.

Props to flo for another nice film. Just wish they could do it without promoting it as negative.

One interesting thing was Pritzlaff was the only coach they spoke with. It was as if he was head coach. Goodale no where in the film

I'm glad to hear that pish. I'm not interested enough in what goes on in Suriano's head to want to watch the film, but I've tried hard to never hold this against him personally. He was a young guy and as such, he had a lot of elements which weighed on the decision (pressure from parents, unhappiness where he was at, a drive to succeed at a higher level, etc.). I don't accept hateful and inaccurate comments even from teenagers and young adults, but I won't hold it against a guy because PSU didn't work out for him. That said, it won't hurt my feelings any if he never wins an NCAA title.

Just watched it. Nick is definitely his own man. He is laser-focused on himself. In this world, it's not necessarily a bad thing, but not something I personally like.

He didn't bash Penn State or Cael. I wish they had gotten him to be more specific on the "things" he didn't like while at Penn State, but his feelings were presented well.

In the video Donny had the title of HEAD COACH printed under his name, Did all the talking during the film. Suriano called him his coach. Goodale was spotted during the match vs PSU but not a peep or mention... What the heck was that all about??

Maybe a dream because I think DOnny would be a major improvement as HC at Rutgers. Perhaps FLO is part of the FAKE NEWS community

So for those that watched it and say he didn't bash PSU or Cael, what was the context of "Let's face it, Penn State, they tried everything they could to not make it happen. That's a fact".

Was that referring to just trying to convince him not to transfer? Because if it's anything else, that would sound like bashing to me.

Basically that had to do with the transfer stuff. He never explained what PSU did to ty to stop it. I took at is Cael kept trying to work things out to bring him back to PSU and he already had his mind made up.

I took it as a positIve. I’m sure Cael wasn’t happy but he kept trying to have dialogue and work it out. Nothing wrong with that IMO

As far as the injury. They showed X-rays in the film. PSU was looking to have surgery and Nick didn’t. Nick felt it would heal enough on it’s own to be ready for NCAAs.

I’m thinking if they had surgery there’s no way he makes it ready by NCAAs and Nick wanted to see if he could give it a go without the surgery.

This is the reason Cael waited till last second to pull him. If they would have had surgery I’m sure Cael would have notified committee he wasn’t competing. Goes against all the conspiracy theorists saying Cael try to “game” the system

The coolest scene in the film was when PSU went to Rutgers. Rutgers was warming up when Cael and company come in to the room.

Was a cool scene. All the Rutgers wrestlers looking up, nervous energy and Cael imposing figure as he is followed by Nolf and Nevills.

Cael and his boys can intimidate with just their presence.

Ryan tried that with his ostentatious robe display, just didn't work.

Thanks Pish for the helpful PBP for those of us who don't have a FLO subscription.

BTW and OT -- Pish every time I see your avatar the placement of Mark's hand makes it look like a scene out of a Mad Max movie. Can't tell if that was an intentional cropping choice on your part, but it looks a bit barbaric brudda. ;)

I have no idea why even the dumbest of the conspiracists can not get their tiny little minds to grasp Cael was simply giving his student-athlete as much time as possible to see if there was a hail Mary in the cards for the kid. No deep dark motivations. There are times my tolerance for stupid is non-existent.

That being said..let's say he gets the surgery (no way he can be back in time) and then Cael pulls him last second. If that was the case, I can see why people would be upset. I can't see Cael doing that but I'm sure someone would if they felt they can "game" the system

In life , I will take the people that are calm and act the same way , Day in and day out , then a kid that needs to keep talking about it. You think this 19 year old ego isn’t embellishing. Meh

Pish, in the end, did Nick feel he could go, and Cael didn't? The promo mentioned he felt robbed. I assume Nick wanted to try to go, correct? TIA

No..he couldn't go. The "robbed" part was just about him being robbed of an opportunity due to injury..no one's fault

I believe in another video I saw in the fall, he said he wasn't going live till April/May..so as much as he wanted to go, he wasn't ready.

i thought the video was well produced. He was able to tell his side of the story and thats what they wanted to showcase. mission accomplished.

Should we go nuts over here like the HR did about not discussing the whole thing (both sides of the vision quest)......probably not. who cares.

When your on top, dont punch down!

furthermore, after watching this, I hope when he is announced next year at Rec Hall that the crowd is silent. No reaction at all. Certainly no booing, but no noise at all.

I think he would want the boos and the silence would kill him............

Agree, but for fans like myself who grew up in the Philly region, no booing is a really big ask :)

Mark it down, this kid will never win a title. Attitude, ego and karma are all working against him.

IMHO it shouldn't matter where you are from. Me personally I never boo a college athlete no matter what.

Nova, I was trying to humorously poke fun at fellow Philly fans. I realize they/we have a bad rep, and deservedly so I'm sure. I was making a joke, not realizing I'd get lectured for it :(

Me personally, I never throw snowballs at Santa Claus. But Philly fans had no issues pelting Mr. C way back in the day :)

I refuse to accept somebody's speculation of Lee's decision over Lee's own statement about his decision.

And Spencer Lee, who moved up an age class to win worlds, didn't want to come to PSU because Nick Suriano might have been at his weight? Cut me a break. World level competitors aren't wired that way.

As far as the supposed 2-year gap at 125 and 133: first of all, it's a one year gap without Lee, so it would be bigger with him? Second, you get to pick 2 out of Lee, Teasdale, and RBY -- you leaving Lee out? Come on. And that might be a false choice anyway. More likely we would've had less money for Berge in Lee's class.

Agree, really don't see any connection between Suriano and Lee's decision. Penn State and Iowa were very close, especially after Mega defeated Gilman in the NCAA finals however I think what led to the Iowa commitment was that they had both finalist in the Olympic Trials. Lee has big international aspirations and made his decision shortly after that. Got to believe that may of been the deciding factor.

After many years I've learned one thing: I don't worry about stuff like this. Nick is doing what Nick wants. There's also an influence that isn't exactly pure as the driven snow. Oh well. I wish Nick the best. I have my feelings on this, and knew this was never happening, in spite of what a certain poster was pushing, which was total bs, btw. Cael doesn't screw over his athletes, and honest people know that. I will say this. This is about team. It's always about team. This is a very close knit team. And I mind some, none of the team members ever said a dispariging word last year. Quite the opposite, they were very supportive.

From the You Learn Something New Everyday Department...
I follow Penn State pretty closely but I just learned something new. At 21:47 in the video, the Rutgers PA announcer introduces Nick as, "ranked number 1 and returning All American". Did his Dad threaten the NCAA with a lawsuit to get that change too?

Gotta think that's pouring salt in old wounds

I really don't get the mindset that Suriano had no impact on Lee's decision. I doubt it had a large impact, but to say it had no impact makes no sense. If someone is making a decision like picking a college, when it is a tough choice, it only makes sense to consider every possible pro and con and base your decision on that. It may even have been a pro for Penn State to have Suriano to work out with.

My son was torn between two colleges and listed every possible pro and con, he even had who had the best chocolate milk....granted that was the lowest ranking pro/con, but it was on the list (although the school with the best chocolate milk ultimately won out).

To not consider other wrestlers on the team would be a foolish oversight in your selection process, one I don't think Lee would have overlooked.

Again maybe not a significant impact but if it really was that close, it may have made a difference. And would I expect Lee to say anything even remotely suggesting it made a difference--absolutely not.

I watched the video and it was okay. I have my opinion of Nick but honestly no one cares. Most of us here are just here to root for the PSU wrestling team. I love the team chemistry Cael, the other coaches and staff, and of course the wrestlers have with one another. Regardless of what happens at NCAA's next week, we have the best team in the country!!!
